Issues and answers for today's senior. citizens
As . dlll88 ehlnll,
so does the role
of mother-In-law
L earning to be a good mother-in-law -
or M.l.L -takes practice. It goes
against a mothcr•s basic insu'nct to
keep her mouth shut. In the old days you
only had one crack at the role. If you blew it.
you were autom;itically assigned to the
Dragon Lady's Qub. ;
Today, however, our kids
are marrying rwo or three
·times, so we have more
on-the-job training. We
can profit by our
mistakes and not
confront the next
son-in-law with the same
old wheeze about our
daughter "working her
fingers to the bone."
Mothers-in-law move
with the times. Kitchen
sink issues have been
replaeed by career crises.
Now we lend our
unsolicited advice to such role-sharing
disputes as whose job it is to pick up the
nightly take-out dinner from the Deli -our
bushed little girl, the co'Tp<>ration lawyer. or
her big, husky, huy husband, the claims
adjuster?
It has been said a woman keeps marrying
the s:ime m~n. the only thing th:ll changes is
his name. But there's another adjustment
nobody mentions: the groom's mother, who
could be a worse fire-breathing dragon than
the previous in-law. To keep things equal.
nature provides two mothers-in-law for every
couple. Each stays in her comer coaching
their loved one like a prizefight manager.
"Go in there, Marigold, and let that
shiftless husband of yours have it right
between the eyes!" cries the mother of the
bride. "Either he helps with the housework
like a real man, or you're splitting!"
Meanwhile, the other fight manager is
advising her boy how to protect himself
against illegal body blows from The; Little
Woman. "Watch those sneaky domestic jabs,
son, or she'H deck )Ou; and the first thing
you know, you'll be mopping the floor."
M any of our kids, in their 40s, think
they're mat ure enough to cope with
their own problems. After helping (hem
through a couple of marriages, several love
affairs, and some disastrous infatuations, we
moms arc being cast aside like old 78 RPM
records. A mother's two-cents isn't worth
anything these days. I don't know whether it's
inOation -or ingratitude.

So what docs an unemployed M.1.L do

Advice to the Lovelorn column? Better yet,
how about becoming a matrimonial lawyer?
We have nil the attributes since we always

Statistics say more Americans are growing older than ever before
If it's rough being a legal mother-in-law,
imagine what it's like to be an
almost-legal-mother-in-law? Meanio&ful
relationships ~n't be burdened with
matriarchal advice like marriages, since
they're not documented. This liberated
lifcsl)'le is so popular today there's a real
danger we M.l.L's miJbt become as extinct as

There arc nil kinds or environmental

might be interested in our cause?
