COSTA MESA -The
"Phantom of the Opera'' ii
expected to brin& blocli:·
buster crowds to the Orange
County Performing Arts
Center durina the new 1993·
94 Broadway theater series.
which was unveiled Monday.
But the coming of the
"Phontom" i no surprise.
Performing Aru Qnter
officials first announced the
booking of Andrew Lloyd
Webber's sm3Sh hit in Fe~
ruary 1992. And e\"C!\
though subscriptions for the
series go on sale Oct. JO,
theater goers will have 10
wait until the end or the
season for: he "Phantom" to
begin its six-week: run, start·
ing July 22 next year.
Both arts center oCficials
nnd local restnurnteurs say it
will be well worth the wait.
"There's no question it's a
very good show," )aid An.d~e .
Porro, co-owner of the R1v1-
era Restaurant at South
Coast Plazn, "II will be a
good a~e1."
The new Broadway the-
ater se ries al the Performing
Arts Center will fea1ure new
national louring productions
ol''Phanrom" and "The
Who') Tommy," which be-
gins May 10. The series will
begin with a two.week run
of "G uy~ and Dolls" begin-
ning Dec. 21. followed by
"Annie Get Your Gun" in
February fe aturing former
Olympic gymnast Cathy
Rigby and ''The Great
Radio City Music Hall
Spectacular" in June with
Su~an Anton.
When the Performing
Arts Center first revealed
that "Phantom" would be.
coming to Costa Mesa, com-
munications director Rich·
ard Bryan& es1ima1~d that a
four-week run of the Broad·
way musical could pump
S20 million into the local
economy.
But nearly two recession·
wracked years after the
coming of the "Phantom"
wns first announced. restau-
rateur Porro has a few res-
ervations about how strong
the economic impact will be
· for his business.
"I don't think: as many
people go out for dinner be·
fore theater as they did four
or five years ago," he said.
"The money is just not
there."
