"It's the old-fashioned way," says
Eddie, SS, owner of the shop for 26
years. "We go ahead and 'break down
the customer,' then we live them the

"A barber inspector came in here a
month ago and he said, 'These old
barber shops are going to be exti.nct

J4-ycar veteran of Fas1 Ed<lic's. His
customers call him Jack the Ripper.
''The old barber pole -that will be

Beckman, fou nder of Beckman
Instruments Inc., says the shop
reminds him o( growing up in CUUom,
Ill., a town of .SOO where he worked in
the local grocery store. '1'hcy bad a
big bascbumer stove and people
would come in, go to the ender
barrel and get a couple of cracten
and slice off a little bit of cheese.
Then they'd sit around for two or
three hours and talk politics or
wenther or that sort of thing,'' be says.
"That was the community gatherina
place."

5-year-old Canon Carpenter waited
patiently for a tum. He 11ys he liYa

I live in Newport Beach and l ha\c

that could put a linle ticket gate at

W hen was the last

bagel because according to
nuuit1onists you're not getting
enough of a good thing.
That good 'thing is grain. Or,
tr.iru lated into food cravings,
delicious pasla, fresh brea~
crun hy cereal or that mid-
aftemoon muffin that ho lds you
over untiJ dinner. Now, when
you crave them, eat them.
Because, A, they're good fO(" / you. And 8, you 're not getting
enough grain products in your
diet.
How-much tS enough? U. .
Dietary Guideline recommend
that we eat 6 to 11 rvings of
grain products daily, depending
on our activity leveJ. This will
provide proper amounts of
cnergizang complex carbohy-
drates, help replace unwanted
fat c.".llOries and upply two
net..~ed types of fabcr.
And how much are we · ..
cn.Wly gcttinW Most ol us arc
woefully shon of the ~
recommendation. Researchers
estimate we avenge jlisl 4

But if eating 6 co 1 1 servin

Arncric.ans meet USDA 's
minimum of 6 servings daily.
Breads, cereals, rice and
pasta are an imporuant pan of
our diet because they provide
complex carbohydrates: the
best source o f energy for our
body.
These foods are excellent
sources of nutrients including
prolein, S-vitamins, iron, zinc
and Olher trace elements. Plus,
they are an important source of
two kinds of fi~-soluble and
insoluble-both of which are
lacking ln the Americ.an diet.
Soluble fiber, found in white
bread and rolls, pasta and
bagels, may decrease
cholesterol levels and
help in preventing
heart disease.
Insoluble fiber, found in
wheat bran and whole grain.S,
play an important role in the
dig~tive system. Many research
tudies indicate it may play an
imponant role m the prevention
of certain cancer , uch as
colon and breast cancer. And it
helps keep us regular.
Grain products also give us a
M!nse of fullne~ and
sati faction. Thh help u-, tay
away from unwanted fat
calories. Carbohydrate have
four calori per gram. while fat
ha nine calone~ per gr.1m.
It is important to eat a
balanced diet and lo eat foods
ftom the five ma)Or food
groups. Nutritionists
generally
recommend that· we get SS-60
percent of our daily calonc
intake from carbohydrate ,
10-15 percent from protein and
le'' than 30 percent from far.
However, the average
American adult Mill pac~ away
