Lifeguards keep busy as 12-loot waves hit coast

In late July, lS-foot surf pummeled
body surfers at the Wedge. Sunday's
waves reached 12 feet at the Wedge and
the Point.
.. It naned at 9:30 a.m. and hasn't really
stopped.'' said lifeguard R~n Williams.
"We ha\e biJ surf and big crov.ds."
Sunny skin and tepid waler drew near·
ly 100,000 people to Newport's shore~.
Williams estimated.

A nnc Hogan-Shereshevsky, 72, is
an outspoken advocate for
seniors, often traveling to
Sacramento as an unpaid
lobbyi<it for the American As5ociation
of Retired Person!..
After 30 )CUr!. as a M>mewhat
cloistered Catholic nun, she enjoys
speaking out. And as she gets older, she
says ~he'd nc,er go back to the convent
life. even though they still keep a room
for her.
"I v.ould not put myself away again,"
says the Co<>ta Mesa resident. "I've paid
my dues. !.O I Y.ant to enjoy life."
At age 18. Hogan-Shereshcvsky so
admired the French nuns who taught
her in high sc hool, she decided to enter
a convent. She moved from her home in
Queens. New York. to a convent tn
Ottawa. joining a French order of nuns
known as the Sisters or Saint Louis'
Marie de Monfort. After her training
was complete, she returned to New
York where !.he lived at Our Lady or
Wisdom Convent while working towar<;i
o college degree and teaching nt a
Catholic elementary school. Following
in the practice of taking the name of a
favorite saint. -;he became Sister
Michael.
"As a new young nun. I had to teach
45, third· grade boys," she says. "An
older nun aid to me. 'They're tough
kids. You're going to st:trt teaching in
September -don't mile until
Christmas.· ..
She eventually moved to several
schools, working with young polio
victims. Jn 1 9~3. she had to run an iron

marginaJ, however, especially in a doctor's
office. It only challenges a woman's
determination to continue her detailed
review of every twinge and sneeze on her
laundry li$t of ailments.
When a physician takes the Hippocratic
Oath be a good listener, he has no idea
what an earful he's going to get from the
lung by hand at a Long Island hospital
to keep a youn& girl alive after a
hurricane caused a power outage. "All
the power blew out and the generators
weren't working."
She earned a chelor's degree in
English from Safot John's University in
New York and was assigned to a
number of East Coast schools throug-
hout ,the years, "like in the Army," she
aays. At age 48, 30 years after she first
entered the convent, she quit.
"At 48, I had my master's degree by
then and I wanted to graduate from the
nunnery," she says. "Shakespeare says.
'Get thee to a nunnery,' J figured it was
time to get thee out of the nunnery. I
wanted to be liberated, but I'm still an
active. practicing Catholic."
The daughter of a newspaper labor
union leader at the New York Post,
Hogan-Shereshevsky was not sure what
to do with her life after she left the
convent in 1969.

Vegas six weeks later. Her hu band,

editor of the organization'• new letter
for 10 years.
She is now in the second year of a
four-year term as an unpaid lobbyist for
AARP. She says health care reform h
