Costa Mesa computer writer Bentle~ Little: a horror writer of International note
By Mamie Mcleod. ---
B y day, Bentley Little writes abouf tlie ~orkings of
computers for the city of Costa Mesa's data entry
department. -·
But by sundown, Little's writing takes on an eerie
transformati<fn. Computer dialogue is replaced with depictions of
psychopaths, psycho killers and the supernatural.
Little is a borror fiction writer, who published his fourth novel
this summe r, "The Summoning," with Zebra Books in New York.
"I've always been a horror fan ," ·said Little, a 32-year-old ·
Fulle rton resident who began his ca reer _writing short stories for
horror magazines while in college. ..
Now the Arizona native uses his home state as the setting for
his unearthly novels. In one of his books, "The Mailman," the
central character is a postman in Payson who tries to take over a
community by manipulating .the mail he dcliVers. His recent· book,

It's unfomm te when those who ma~e a •
career of reportutg can so easily
mWntcrprct t~ose few elected officials
who do an outstandana job of reprc enting
us.
l refer to your Aug. 19 edition" where
the front page announces a comment~uy
inside by Assembly Gil Ferguson. Instead
or sticking to an announcemcn(. you
proclllirned that Ferguson had "reversed
his position" on the proposed la:c
assessment (Measure A) 'in Newport
Beach.
I certainly did not draw such a twi!.ted
. conclusion after reading his article. .
Indeed, his position is unchanged. He said
he would support a vote, on the Castaways
and Newporter North purchase, but only
under several sltict conditions.
Ferguson is on the job, nsking important
questions.,,on behalf of the t3Xp:iyers and
, business. We ta.xpayers voted to require a
2/3 vo1e on any property tax increase. Why
should it be any different for a parcel tax?
A tax is a tax is a ta.,.
And il we vote to further tax ourselves
to pay for the Back Bay land, aren't we
entitled to some a surance that we can
enjoy our purcha.)e? Or should the public
not question its nght to public land?
Ferguson further suggested generllting
the money instead by citing off other
public assets. That's a refreshing contr:ist
to today's "just raise ta.ices" mentality. He's
doing what most politicians fail to do -
prou:cting the public from putting more
money into government, which increasingly
provides less and less.
AL COOK
Newport Beach
. 0
Mayor Clarence Turner and
Councilwoman Jan Debay of Newport
Beach think Councilman John Cox
.. represented the city well" on the
Tnnsportation Corridor Agency.
Residents of Corona del Mar disagree.
You decide.
l. Cora-p-;m>vcd of-anct supported the
location of a toll booth that will effectively
diminish the purpose of the bypass road
(Newport Coast) that protects Corona dcl
Mar from excessive trafftc.
2 During the years he was on the TCA
and this booth was planned, he made no
attempt to bring 10 th~ttenuon of the
city the location of the li'ootti and its
devastating effect.
3. Hi$ purpose. he said, and one of
which he was "ju tiftably proud," was 10
sell the bonds for the toll road, and
evidently, any means justified the end.·
Obviously. the more toll booths, the more
revenue: the easier to sell the bonds
When the ~rry mess came to light -by
the press, not Mr. Cox -. he said, "Don't
worry. we will build an additional ribbon
of concrete around ~misplaced toll
booth." (Not a dirett r/)ute, but somehow
or other a motorist can escape the toll.)
4. So now, another road c~Ued alternate
1, 2. or 3, will try at our expense to undo
what simple, hone!.t, open planning "-OUld
have made unnecessary in the first place.
Councilwoman Dcbay supported the toll
booth and justified her posuion by
reasoning, .. the exi tencc of the toll booth
could have been discovered among the
thousands of pages of the ElR."
This is similar 10 the reasoning that
finding buried 1n the federal budget, an
item liMing U'sh trays for $700, means it's a
good idea to spend $700 for an ash tray
because it is nght in the budget.
Doesn't something seem to be wrong
when our "watchdog" allows a m:agnificcnt
new road, built as a mitiaatint measure to
route traffic around Corona del Mar, be
lessened in eff~c11vcness to serve as a
"bypass" by changina it into a pay-to-use
road.
And our own representative doe n~
come openly 10 the people and tell them
wh:u he h.ls done. Of counc he didn't tell
us because 11 would ha\'C been, "rcmO\e it
now. and find another way to sell yc)ur
bonds."
