By LonAnn 8ashedl. ~ wa
I t's hard enough for ia 4-ycar-old «? face the first day of
kinderiarten, let alone do at in the spotlight of four
reporters, three photographeB. two television crews. one
nervous mother and the top dog of the entire school
district.
But Bnan Woodud gobbled up the attention like a giaat
sundae. ·
After 111. the boy beat out all other kindcrgartencrs in the
Ncwpon-Mcsn Unified School District for the honor of beina
escorted by Superintendent Mac Bernd on the first day of
school.
And what did Brian think of his new friend? "Noth ins."
OK. so he was 1 little shy at first.
But be eventually warmed up to the fanfare -even
mugina for the photoaraphen who followed him around the
Sundance Lane bus stop in Costa Mesa clicking their , . cameras.
At one point, the youth asked a radio reporteT who was
anncd with a microphone whether the man was waitin& for
him to sins 1 aooa. And when Bernd wandered a few yards
from the mcdta ctusier to mate a can on his potUble p~
Brian -apparenrly worried that his cscon might miss the
bus -anxiously shouted "Come on, Mac.••
"Herc we go buddy,"• Bernd said. when the bus-finally
arrived. "It's time to&<> to kinderpncn."
Being the new mian on campus himself, Bernd said il
seemed fiuina that he cscon a kinderg.anencr to school
Thursd:iy.
The principnl at Victoria Elementary recommended Bnan
after meeting the boy at registration last week.
"They didn't have a star search or anything." explained the
boy's mom, Kristina Woodard, adding tha t her son agreed to
1he arrangement with the stipulation that she follow his bus
10 school on the big day.
Mom kept her promise -but it only prolonged the
inevitable.
"I don't "ant to a<> here this day," Brian pouted. shufflin&
his feet. when she sn1d goodbye at the classroom door.
He finally agreed to stay, but only if Bernd did too. After
aJI, new friends ought to stick toaether.
AboYe, lri.ln Woodud wraps. himself ~nd his Woocbrd and Bernd's first day of school, ~o the
mother Kristina's legs while w~ti~ lot-the bus two shared the momentous ~nt, C\'Cn riding the
with s~intendent Mac Bernd Thurscby. It wu bus together (abo\'c, I fl).
