Wheeler Ill, a local rancher,
grandson or a his1orical San
Francisco family and husband
to an Irvine family heiress. died
Sunday or heart failure after
being ill for several months.
He was 78.
Charley Wheeler, as be was
known to friends and family,
was a third-generation member
of the Wheeler family -prom-
inent in northern California
since the 1ime or the gold rush.
His grandfather, Olarles Stet·
son Wheeler-Sr. and his father,
Charles S1e1son Wheeler Jr.,
were recognized attorneys in
northern California. Charles
Wheeler Sr. buill a summer
ranch, the Bend on the Mc-
Cloud River, where he hosted
such people as Rudyard K.iplin'
and Robert Louis Stew:nson.
He was married to Kate, the
granddaughter of Janic.s Irvine
II, in 19'41 . The couple were
married for 52· years.
Wheeler graduated from UC
Berkeley in 1938 and 1ervcd as
a lieutenant in the United
States Na~ during World War
ti. Upon his return, he .worked
for the Irvine Co. as head of
