County planners released 11 study last wed that
they uy shows the need for bridges across the
Santa Ana River at 19th Street and Oisler Avenue.
Our rt1dcrs, for the most fnn,\ diugree.
0
A bridge would cause irreparable dam-.e to acres
and acres or wetlands and other ccologjc&Uy
sensitive areas. It would also destroy nciJhbortlooch
with an increase in traffic. polhitioo and crime -
not co mention the deva.swion that would be fell
by the over 60 homeowners on the East 19th
Street, whose homes would be demolished to
facilitate the increase in traffic if the bridge were to
go throuah.
At present there arc only 7000 car trips per doy
at the end of West 19th Street. If the bridge were
to ao through this would 'kY rock.ct to 36,000 &rips
per day. Th.at &s not including the anticipaled
seasonal incrca5es due to beach traffic or the
incrcucs that would be felt ii West Newport Oil
built up their project to the fullest.
Current projected troffic p:mcrn.s do not 'upport
the expense oC financial ald to the community as a
whole. Let Newport Beach and Huntington Beach
look within their own boundaries for alternative
ways to support their own development. Please
don•t destroy our neighborhood in order to save
your own.

I am caUlna to ~ice a complaint about &he 19th

settled. and I'm concerned thlt we•rc not .
considering alternatives like puttl.na the brid&c at

Industrial area.
I'm horrified to sec that the developers are ·
apparently plannin& houses i.n the Ban.ni.na Street
. area. l am horrified. I live In a wonderfully quiet
community, which is officially in the city of
Newport Beach but the bridac of 19th Street will
destroy this communjty, and I am adamantly ...
opposed to it.
I think the cities o( Cotta Mesa and Newport
Beach should act toaethcr and do somethina about
lhil.

I think it is critical th:it the bridge project be
completed. The reason being thut it) far~ any
reasonable planning for the future is concerned,
the 191h Street bridge is :in abwlu1e nece~sit) for
traffic now. ond the :ilternnt1vc is -in the future
-the traffic on CoMt Highway will be so thick
onct heavy that efficient commuting along the shore
will be essentlolly impo) iblc.
So therefore, I om strongly in fovor thnt 1he
project hould go ahead.

And that shootin& follows
on the heels or an incident
last July where police allege
two gangs squared off in a
gunfight al the pier that left
one man dead and another in·
ju red, ·
Rush Hill, the president of
the Newport Pier Association.
said his group had coincidcn·
tally scheduled an 8:30 a.m.
meeting tod:iy with Oiief Mc·
~nell to discuss the pier
lSSUe.
The association. made up
la.rgely of local merchants, has
discus$ed closing the pier
since early 1992, HiU said.
"The association's initial po-
sition was in opposition based
on the belief in freedom of
the individual and the belief
thac a lo1 or people filh on she

table.'' H.iU said.
But Hill said the as.ociation
revie•e~ the issue in May ol
1992 and reversed.its po5ition,
citing 1bc ul\Salc condiriom on
the pier. They have since
called for I.he pier to be closed
from midni&ht to dawn.
ln addition the association
wanes increased liahting and
more police patrols on the
pier.
"It's our mission a.s an as-

year-round, family-oriented
cnvironme1tt here at the pier
chat bu dinina and en·
tcnainment and services." Hill
said. "We believe very stronaly
that we canaot achieve that
unless we have a foundation
of safety."
Mayor C1arcnc:c Turner S3id
he has asked city orcicitlls to
prepare a list or options for
combating the problems at the
pier -and one option to be
discuued at the Moodny's
council meeting will be closing
it. probably at midnight.
"The bottom tine has gor to
be that we can't let the area
became .a haven Cor gangs to
congregate and shoot each
other up," said Turner, who
noted chat the Balboa Pier
would fall under the same re·
strict ions.
Turner and Council~omnn
J~n Dehay soid clt»inJ the
pter may be aecdcd because
tbe city lacks money to pay for
24-hour police p3trols on tbc

But Dehay said she b sug-

and keep people off the pier

Councilwoman Evelyn Ha.rt
could not be rcoched for com·
ment Monday but most other
council members leaned t~
ward closing the pier, with the
exception or Coundlman John
Cox. who said he had "no
opinion" on the &ubject.
"I've said for a long time
tha.1 ic's something we oughl
