..,. Orange Coast College star
Bin Rimmer got the test of his
soccer career, and.-passed it.
0 range Coast Colle'-e soccer player
Bill Rimmer hadn t played
aoolkeeper since he was 10 years
old, compc1ing on his American Youth
Soccer Organiza1ion team.
But there he wus. on the firing line, as
the Pirates took on def ending state
champion El Camino on the road in the
team's season-opener. The result was
anything but embar~ing to Rimmer and
his teammates, il!> the t"o teams played to
a 1-1 deadlock.
"I was scared," admilted Rimmer, who
was called on to fill in when the team's
regular keeper m1s..cd the bus ... It was an
interesting kind of challenge. lbere were
five shots and I "~able to top four.
"The defcn e "as really trong that day.
I think they stepped 1t up a little bit to
help me out."
Rimmer's job normally isn't to prevent
&Qals, but rather to score them. As an
All-Sea View League and A11-CIF

High la~t year. he w~

the leader in a~is1s
So far this year,
through 1he first t\\O

matche), Rimmer had
not !.Cored but has six
assists.
"Bill is a good kid
and hard worker," said occ Co-Coach uurd
C Hayes. "He'll be olleges playing a lot for us."
Rimmer recently
earned a spot playing-in
the halftime ·demonstntion of \he
USA-Trinidad m:ucb at El Camino
College.
"That was quite an experience," he
said. "The tryout was over two days and
there ~ere 200 to 300 kids there, from all
over and all ages. some up to 20 years old.
I was one of four chosen overall, for
dribbling and shooting. It was a great
boost."
The Pirl!tcs, 2·0.2 overall, continue
their rugged non-conference .schedule with
games at home today at 4 p.m. against
Cerritos and on the road al Cuyamaca
College Friday at 1 p.m.
• It comes early m the season, but
perhaps it's a timely bye for the OCC
football team this week.
With losses to 1::.1 Camino an Torrance
last Saturday and Mt. San Antonio in
their season-opener, the Pirates arc off to
their worst start since Coach Bill
Workman's fir~t season, 1986.
"Well, we can't lose this week." said
Workman, who added that he plans lo put
the time to good use ... We'll have plenty
of things to work on We're back to the
drawing board."
OCC blew a 24-14 lead in the fourth
quarter a1ains1 El Omuno in the Bucs'
Mission Conference opener. Workman
has now lost all five of his games og.iinst
John Fcathcrstonc's Wamors (althouah
last year's loss was revc~cd because of an
El Camino forfeit).
"We played well offensively, but we
couldn't get the ball back," said
Workman. "Our pass defense was not
very effective."
