For starters, who do you pick at center: Dill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain or Kareem Abdul-Jabbar? Such was the task when Picking the most influential people in Newport Beach-anti C-osta Mcsa-forl-993-:-. Tbcrc is no mathematical formuJa to follow, no scientific d:ua to unscramble, no inherently correct answers to the question we askC'd. So we checked our sources, t.alked with community leaders, interviewed archetypal readers and debriefed our beat reporters. \Ve originally thought we could come up with a Top 50" The number quickly grew 10 75 and then to 100. Only lack of space stopped us at 103. You won't find 46 politicians on the list -and for good reason. W e tried to identify the threads that together make up the rich rnpestry of Newport-Mesa, and selected the most influential {defined as the ability and courage to affect c~ange) from diverse segments of our community such as: education; business; religion; sports; society; arts; public safe ty; philanthropy and, of course, politi~. . BY THE NUMBERS The list reflects the community, and to that end it i not as diverse as we had hoped. There arc no blads. for instance. And there are only 25 women. Hopefully that will change in the year ahead. It's important to ... remember that the list is designed in the spirit of fun . Without doubt. "e left many off the list who deserve to be there. Kim's mother. Joan, was most impreucd with the fant home visit. The coach from Colorado thorouply explained everything which made future 'll1sus and decisions very easy.
