The timing was inspired. After a

Issues and answers for today
'A .godsena . ror retirees'
That·~ how one avid lawn bpwler
describes this gentile sport. Indeed,
the Newport Harbor Lawn _Bowling
Club has 125 members who enjoy
non-competitive nature of contests.
By Russ (oat, Staff Writer
inesse.
That's the art of lawn bowling, summed up in
a single word by John Amies, president of the
l25-mcmber Newport Harbor Lawn Bowling
Club.
"It's a sport that requires a lot of finesse," Amies says.
"It's not a sport that requires a great deal of physical
strength."
That's just the ticket for Val Seeley, a former profession-
al bowler and avid golfer who no
longer participates in either sport.
She says lawn bowling, or "bowls"
as it's called in England, keeps her
act iv~:
"h's a godsend for retirees," she
says. "You meet a lot of people and
you can do it every day of the
week."
Decked out in their "dress
whites," members of the Corona
del M,a.r club competed with
members of the Pasac:¥na Lawn
Bowling Club last week. But don't
call it a tournament. That's far too
confrontational ·for such a gentile
game. Oub members call su~h
contests "visitations."
"It's 1 friendly kind of get·
togethe~' says club member Gil
Curry. "Nobody gets uptight if
they lose."
The· Newport Harbor Lawn
Bowling Club was founded in 1939
near the American Legion Post on
Balboa Peninsula. The club moved
into new facilities on the corner of
Crown Drive and San Joaquin
Hills Road in Corona del Mar in
1972. The ciry owns the land and
pays for upkeep, and the club
charges only nominal membership
"dues. . .

Lawn bowlers roll weighted
"bowls" that cutve slightly as
1hey're thrown. The object is to
come as near as possible to a white
ball called the jack. Players first roll
the jack. trying to put it at a
distance that matches the skills of
their team members. The accuracy
of a roll is dependent on how hard
the bowl is thrown and at what
angle.
~ewport BHch lawn bowlers Blair lord~ left, and Val Seeley give each ol~~ a high-fi\le during recent tournam~t. ·
The game con be traced back to
ancient Egypt. The Romans played
a similar game called "boccie," and
the first English club was founded
in 1299. Players in England used
stones, but the game was routinely
bjnned by English kiags who feared
the game was causing the neglect of
nrchory.
In America, the game has been
popular since colonial times. But
there arc only about 5,000 lawn
bowlers in the United States today,
compared to about S0,000 in
England. In South Africa, major
lawn bowling tournaments arc
broadcast on television and attract
stadium crowds of more than
20,000, according to club member
Werner Sachs, a former resident of
South Africa.
But for most players, the low-key,
non-competitive nature of the sport
suits them just fine.
"It's mild exercise and you get to
meet o Jot of nice people," says
club member Blair Lord. "It's very
civilized ::: it's a very gentile
sport."
