~ Newport Harbor's 1-2 punch
could develop into a knockout
punch in CIF tennis individuals.
J ust what do you get the singles
players who have everything?
Sea View Lc3gue singles
champions Mora Colaizzi (1991) and
Sarah Hawkins (1992), who also happen
to be Newport Harbor High tcDmm:ucs,
may have found just the right prize: a
league doubles title.
The tnlcntcd twosome, which tws
pla)ed singles all season, is contemplating
combining forces foP,thc Sea View League
Finals next week, with an eye on a strc~ng
run in CIF Southern Section indivicfual
tournament that culminates Dec. 3.
"I )till need to talk with Mara about
tt," :ud Hawkins, who may get a
chemistry test with her potential p:irtner
Preps
in today's Sea View
League match at
Woodbridge. "It's been
mcn1joned, but ~c
really haven't thought
:ibout it yet." .
Newport Coach
Charlie Blciker admits
doubles is a possibility
for his standouts, but
said the decision is up
to the girls.
"League finals is an
individual tournament, ·
M> the kids will make
their own decisions,"
Dleiker said. "I think
they both have to look at the fact they've
:ilre:idy won (league) singles titles, and
thal 1hcy may have a better chance or
getting farther in CIF in doubles.
"They realize the Peninsula (singles)
gJrls arc in :inolhcr class.
(Cola1ui·Hawkins) also could be pretty
i>trong in doubles, because they bo1h have
Mrong servc·and·volley games."
Ble1ker said he may decide to pair the
twosome ag:iinst Woodbridge, but needed
10 "sleep on 11," before making a final
call.
Ano1her factor in the decision is the
presence of strong Sea View singles
performers Sara Denson (Irvine), Natalie
Exon (Woodbridsc) and Marcie Asch
(Corona del Mar).
Hawkins has fallen to all three thus Car
1n league competition, while Colaizzi has
lost to Denson. and defeated Exon and
Asch. last season's le:igue singles
runncr·up.
D Before individu:it matters arc dealt
with. Newport hopes to claim its first-ever
Sea View team championship, which
should be decided in Thursday's
