CdM, ra·rs roll; CIF title on the line
Mus•s ready to prove . . they can do history, too
~ Costa Mesa girts basketball
forces appear to have the tools
to make an·other s91id run.
BY BAa.aY PAULIDlU.. StoUI Wana.
COSTA MESA -The ~ fact that last year's Costa 1 Mesa High girls b3sket·
ball team made history is
history to this year's squad, aC'cording
to second-year coach Lisa McNarnee.
McNamee needn't be reminded that
last season's ~S record, Clf Southern
Seetion and Southern California .cham·
pionships. and a trip to the Division Ill
state title game in Oakland is a tough
act 10 follow. But she is quick to point
out this group's potential to attain its
own brand of success.
"I think we have to approach it as if
Inst year wns last year. and we have to
prove ourselves again this season," said
McNamee, who must also come to
Heather Robinson
very well."
&rips with the
loss of four·
year All·Clf
standout
Olivia DiCa·
milH, now a
freshman at
San Diego
· State.
"Everyone
is going to be
shooting at
you, after
having the
kind of year
we had. But I
think we'll do
McNamee's confidence is inspired in
part by senior returner Heather Robin·
son, who emerges from three seasons
in DiCamilli's ample shadow with sec·
ond·team AJl.CJF 'ciedentiaJs, and a
Division 1 scholarship to Miami, which
she accepted during the recent early
signing period. r .
"Some pcople~rrlostJy coaches, know
how good a player Heather is, but
she's finally going to get the op·
portunily to show everyone else what
she can do," McNamee said. "She's
going to move from the off-guard spot
to Olivia's three (forward) position,
and we expect her 10 help our orrense
with her inside game, her ouuide shoe,
and with her very good passing abiJity."
It's the third position in three yeaJ'S
for the S·foot·JO Robinson, who aver·
aged 10.7 points and 3.2 assists last
year, after spending her first two prep
seasons at point guard.
In addition to DiCamilli, whose No.
22 jersey was retired, three other start·
ers have graduated, creating opportuni·
tics for senior retumcn Doan Do, An·
toinelte B3nua and Tracy Vega. as ~cu
as additions from
cbampi,onship
junior varsity and
frosh·soph levels.
"Our two lower
level teams lost
as few games
combined, as our
varsity team did,"
McNamee said.
Do, who a.vcr·
aged 2.S points in
a reserve role last
year, is this year's
emotional leader
at a starting
guard spot.
Do will be
joined the back·
court by fresh·
man point guard
HOOPS ·
Koo Kim, who takes aver the position
from sister Yool Kim, now playing at
Cal State Los Angeles. Seasoned by
years of AAU competition. the·young·
er Kim brings sound ball-handling and
scoring skills 10 the program, but must
work to develop defensively.
"It's runny, because she's almost the
exact opposite player Yoor was," Mc·
Namce said. "Yool was a great de·
fender, who wasn't counted upon to
score, whereas Koo is fine on the of·
fensive end, and has to learn some
things defensively."
Banua, a S-9 forward-center, brings
outstanding athletic ability to the line·
up after averaging just 1.8 points in
limited minutes as a Junior.
Banua wiJJ be joined in the front·
court by S-11 senior Debbie Cotten
and 6-1 sophomore Corri Lurmann,
from whom McNamce is expecting big
things.
.. Debbie gives us inside muscle, re·
bounding and strong defense.," Mc·
Namee said. "Corri has the potential
to become a very good player, but her
progress was set back by an injury over
the summer."
Vega, a S-6 guard·Corward, a\'eraged
2.2 points as a junior, and should con·
tribute as a starter, or lop reserve.
Tasea Brown, a S·Jl junior, and 5.7
senior Erin Brown (no relation) will
also be counted upon off the bench,
while seniors Suah Spene.er and Dey·
ana Stojanovich, as well as junior
Memory Bartlett will add depth.
"We're going to be deeper and more
balanced than last year," McNamee
s:iid. "We've put in a new offense,
which fits this group a lot better ... I've
been very imprc~d with the effort in
practice."
McNamee said she expects to battle
cross-town rival Estancia, where she
coached for six seasons from 1985·9 I,
for the Pacific Coast Lengue crown.

A Stroff e block made it 7-6 Laguna. then a
