PERENNIAL WINNER
RALPH CARACO IS ONE
OF THE MANY TAKING
PART IN THIS YEAR,S
RING OF LIGHTS CONTEST
NORTH BA YFRONT -As a child, Ralph Caraco says he was never too exci ted about
decorating for Christmas. • But ever since he moved into his bay«ont home on BJlboa
Island six year ago, he's gone hog wild. • A model train \\ith Rudolph in the cJho9'\e
travels a circular pattern above the Christmas-tree-lined dock leading from his home. A
stuffed bear rides a unicycle on a tightrope back and forth above his front gate while
Santa Claus and reindeer circ le around the chimney. The words .. Santa's Toy Shop ..
beam in multicolored lights above a string of huge c:indies \Happed in glo y red, green
and gold wrappers. • "I enjoy buiJding things," said Caraco, 49, a cu tom home builder.
"The boat people decorate their boats so nicely, it' fun to do something for them \O that
when they come by they have something special to look at." • Cameo and other
homeowners surrounding the watery route of the annual Newport Harbor Christma\ BoJt
Parade compete every year in the Ring of Lights conte t -a land-locked ve~ion of the
boat parade. Yacht clubs, restaurant~and commercia l de\.elopments abo compete. •
Last year, Caraco was awarded first place for the be. t u c of animation and his hou e
was named one of the five best decorated homes along the boat parade route.
