Ha In hot water
Newport Beach resident stumbled upon lush Guadalupe Canyon, fell in love
with its hot springs and now helps run a geothermal resort business
BY CUANo&. a CHAND&.aa,
STAnWa.ina -
N ewpon resident Robert
William often finds
him elf in hot water -
up to 125 degrees -while
urroundcd by Mexico's lush .\
ptilm tree • boulders and
gorgeous landscaping.
A (cw years back, Williams
was exploring Mexico's Baja
California in his Volkswagen
bua and on-foot when he
stumbfed upon Guadalupe .
Canyon. As 11 result he became
n c~owncr in Arturo Loya's
business, Campo Numero Uno,
which features natllr.lt hot
springs, and muri~d Loya's
daughter, Maria Isobel.
"My hobby is to go down
anto Daja exploring and hiking.
It just evolved into seeking out
natural geothermal hot springs
for soaking ... Guadalupe
Can)on was one area I kept
returning to," .snid Williams,
"ho ~tall consistently returns
"1th his wife.
"ll was love nt first sight, we
got married six months ofter
we met," Williams said of his
"1fc. "ho is the granddaughter
IUFFELL'S
IPllLSltlf me.
of Don Jose. the ori&intl
owner of Goadalupc Canyon,
who sectioned it off to his
• three sons. One son, Arturo
Loya, took advantage or his
property's natural hot sprinp,
and hot tubs built by Americ3o
volunteers, and built a
campsite around them.
The campsite is set up to
allow natural mineral water to now from six springs through
man-made aqueducts and into
private man-made hot tubs,
toilets aria showers. "Every
. campsite has its own
rock-and-cement hot tub," said
Williams, who recently
doubled the number of bot
tubs to 20.
"The water h very rel:wng
because it is rich in such
minerals as lithium," said
Williams, who :idded "it is
comfortable for many hours of
soaking."
Favorite campsi tes include
El Sol, which W11linms says is
popular because it is located
"on a ridge, where )OU .get the
morning sun." La Cueva.
Spanish for the ca\'C, is a
16-foot-long, 500-to 600-gatlon
hot tub stretching between two
boulders and inco a cave. "You
can put 20 people into it," S3id
Wilti:uns.
The campsites !re also
surrounded by "a variety of
plartt life and wild life," said
Walliams, who claims it i also
possible to go back 10,000
years by following Indian trails
past the waterfalls and
towering palms into the
canyons. On large rock
formations, dozen~ of ancient
Indian C<lve paintings, d.ati ng
back 10,000 ye:irs, can be
found.
"Of all the sprjngs that I
have discovered, Guadalupe
Ca nyon possesses the n:itural
beauty and perfect terrain to
de"clop a first-<:lass bot springs
resort," Williams said. To
make campers mQre
comfortable, Arturo has even
added a store and restaurant.
Guadalupe Canyo n is a
two-and-a-hair hour drive from
the U.S.-Mex1co border and
five hours Crom NeWport
Beach. There is no electricity
or telephones an the canyon,
m:iking a phoJle call a 60-mi le
trek.

One of the lop divorce and family

Is there a sense of equality In
Chin:t between tbt men and
~omen that is dirrcreot than here
. In the U.S.?
Interestingly enough, Chinese
'-'Omen ure working extreme!)
hard in order 10 arrive at equality.
We m~t with the Women's
Federation of Zhejiang Province
who discussed their plans to
ei.tablish equality with the men
with us. Yet, at the same time in
the profe~ions, the Chinese seem
to be ahead of our progress. As an
example, 38% of all judges sitting
in China a.re female. In Mediation.
50% of aU mediators are women.
In most other professions, such us
dentist, doctors, accountants, 50%
or more are female. Despite the
above statistics, the Chine~ •
women still fell that a lot of
progress needs to be made.
Especially, since some of their
laws favor males.

Divorce rates in China is rising

eeking comfort and joy at Christmastime Mariners Church celebrates Church of Religious

"O tidings of ,om(ort and joy,

o( this Christmas carol preceded the
evening news, "A New York man

crowded commuter train that left
Penn Station this evening for
Hicksville, Long Island, killing five
and seriously or critic.ally wounding
at least 15 others ... mocking
k1dnappmg and murder of
12-year-old Polly Klaas ... lsraeli
"'Settlers 1n the West Bank and Gaza

asked, ' Ha\.e you noticed how you
can be full of the Christmas spirit

her voice lilted on the airwaves.
·until someone takes your parkin~

I had my gun ' ... I just don't get it,
Lo you?"
I often wonder, and sometimes
sk, wh3t people mean when they ,j.ay they are "full of the Chtistmas

Until someone takes our parking
1 ~ce. We tell ourselves that
~ people, especially ourselves, are
J oosically good. But we see that it
1ust isn't true We, like the I radio-show host who lost her
P.Jrl..ing space, are self-~lerested
• a nd petty and vindictive. We
dream of ge1t1ng even. "Don't get
mad. Cet even," we ~vertise on
J bumper stickers and license plate I frames. Our resentment and
iealousy may not be discharged
from a hand gun, we may not take
I direct hits like Colin Ferguson did
finger to the driver who geb "' our

withhold kindness from those who
disappoint us, or 1ho!ie who are, we

us. We levt!I celebnt1es and
politicians on catty radio and

the distre.s and sorrow of this

''\\lhy C.ln't ~e all ju>< get along?"
Nevertheless, the "comfort and
joy" of the carol are real, They
came to the -A'Orld in a baby, t;x:><n

th.Jt they could do better ap<lrt
from Cod than with him. They
turned from Cod and lo)t their
fortune. As therr herrs, our only
inheritance is sin and death. But
Cod did not abandon us.
The Bible tells us that "c.od so
lo"ed the world that he gave his
only begotten Son. that whoever
believes in Him should not peri:.h
but have everlasting life." This is
what tw1.e celebrate at Christll'\.1.S.
Cod, made man, laved among us.
He defeated S'1tan. sin and death.

After he left, she said: .. He's

You could tell it took more than

have my Jl'O&hcr, Mrs. Poll:ud, come to

Meredith introduced her

questions because Mother's onJy infirmity
is that she doesn't hear too well. Other
than that, she's healthy, bright and doesn't

One of the first questions was about
where she grew up. She told them of her

them of a hayride she went on to W:iverly

As principlll of Costa Mesa Hjgh
School, I personally want to thank the
Daily Pilot for putting together this
commemorative issue.
The Mesa footbaU team has generated a
positive environment that has allowed
every one to reel that Costa Mesa is No. I.
and that success is a tc:im effon through
which we can all achieve.
Individual players have shined -Binh
Tran, Brian Luxembourger, and Dewayne
Cren h:iw, for example -but il was
always a team effort.
Mesa h:is always been a terrific place;
yet it has received little recognition. Now
sit b:ick and watch us go!
Academic and athletic excellence go
hand-in-hand and we have begun a
renaiss:ince th:at will allow us to achieve
and be recognized.
It goes without S3y1na that we -the
staH and students -want to acknowledge
and thank our p:ircn&s and the locaJ
business community ror their support.
The commemorat~-c issue was full of
ads of support and encouragement. I
would like these supporters to know how
appreciative we arc and to encourage
them to become c"en more involved with
their school.
I actively seek input and open
communications with all scgm~ots of the
communjry so that we may better meet the
needs of everyone.
Again, thanks for addina to the
euphoria. Costa Mesa High School is, to
my way or thinking. number one.
The school. starr. students, parents. and
