HIGH SCHOOL BOYS SOCCIR
Costa Mesa seeking consistency
~ Mustangs have shown
some potential in early
stages of campaign.
BY llaCKAJLD DUNN, SIOan Wann
COSTA MESA -
Following a roller·
coaSter ride in the
prcscason, Costn
Mesa High's boys
soccer team is plan-
ning for upward mobility in the
Pacific Co:ist League.
1f only first-year coach Carlos
Miramontc& can gel his top play·
ers to practice.
''l believe we can be as good as
we want to be.'' s:iid Miramontes,
\\hose squ:id (4-4·1) won four or
i1s first fi"c preseason games, then
lo)t three nnd tied once.
"We think we can go all the
way, because \\<e reel that WC can
play with :ln)body. We've just got
, to be committed 10 being :i good
team. The problem is that we have
some lazy pl:iycrs. who don't want
to practice.
"If they miss one practice, I
hold them out or one game. l
don't think some of the players
love the sport as much as they
should. (M issing practice)
wouldn't be going on if it was
football; that's what I want in SOC·
ccr. That's the way it was when I
BASTANI:
played soccer."
Miramontes, 23, w:is an AU-Far
West Conference player at South·
ern California College, und
coached ~unny Hills High's JV
team to b:iek·to-back league cham·
pionships in 1991 and 1992. com·
piling a 34-3-9 record.
"I think we were really moti·
v:itcd, or excited, about the season
starting," Miramontes said of the
Must:ing.s' quick start.
"They knew we were going to
have a good team; lhcy were up to
playing and it showed. Now, we're
getting red cards, and injuric!t and
vacations have hurt us. We haven't
h:id a full squad play one g:imc,
yet, and we 're nine games into it."
Mesa plays two more presc:>.$0n
games -Jan. 4 at Brea Olind:i,
and Jan. 5 at home against Dana
Hills -before opening PCL :ic·
tion Jan. 7 ag:iinst Estancia.
"l sec the (league title) race
going to any of the four teams -
Trabuco Hills. us, Estancia and
Laguna Hills," Miramontes said.
"We have a super strong (starting)
11, and we're about three or four
deep on the bench, but the prob-
ably is, we haven't had those three
or four deep, because people keep
missing practice."
With freshmen startc~ Carlos
Loza (goalkeeper), Jose Ca!)illas
(left halfback) and Chris Mokede
(s\\'ccper), the future looks bright
for Costa Mesa. Lou, v. ho-has
two shutouts. will split time "ith
Dan H:irris in the goal.
"(Loza) is going to be gc .. xt,''
Miramontes said. "He just need.I
more size (S-foot-6, 135 pounds).
If the game's close, wc'U keep him
in."
MidCielders Hugo Porcayo and
Camillo Ramirez. def enders Fred
Wood and Robert Isaacs, forwards
Luciano Deleon, Yuki Kimura
and Carlos Avnlos, fullbacks Jarod.
C:ill and Kevin Runge, and half·
backs Jaime Garcia, Ken Mortgen·
stem and Carlos Regnier arc all
ca~ble or. filling of starting roles.
Brian Benson (midfielder).
Brady Cl:irk (defender), Jorge
H:iro (defender) and Ryan Ar·
rcchedera (midfielder) could ej.
thcr start or add depth to lhe
Mustangs' solid bench.
Miramontes wants disciplined
players who hu!ttle. "When we lost
to Vill:i Park, 3-0, In the third·
place g:ime of the Katella Touma·
mcnt, every player who played for
. me were my hustlers," he said. "It
was :i very close game, and none
of my star players were there."
As a pl:iycr, Miramontes trav-
eled to Europe ~1th a )'Outh nU·
star team, and thereafter bec:imc
an AU-CIF player at Sunny n ills
High. He hopes to travel a loni
way with the Mu.slangs
