basketball backboards.
Finally, someone is
considering the conce rns of
the people who live in the
neighborhood and who arc
trying to stress family values.
I read v.•ith in1ercs1 the
article in the Daily Pilot on
Dec. 27 regarding the
pcl ition the two Estancia
H igh School basketball
players have presented and
one o f their mo ther's
statcn1en1s lhat she wanted
them 10 play in a park that
was safe_
It would be of interest to
kn~ where the 500
signa1u res on the petition
came from. as very few, if
a ny of them, wo uld have
come from residents living
near the park.
Professional journalism
would d ictate that the
both public school
administrators a nd can
sympathize wilh the girls
and the mother when she
says she wants her cbugh1cr
lo have a safe place 10
baskc1ball tha1 is within
bicycle-riding distance.
There are plenty or
outdoor basketball coorts
available fo r use a1 E.it~ncia
High School. I would
encourage the girls to use
the courts a1 their own high

hands of their Chinese hosts.
As the man in his family, he
v.·ould spend years protec1ing his
mother and siblings rrom the
ha rsh life in World \Var II
prisoner of war camps con1rolled
by the Japane~. More accurately,
;:is Ile would pul it, lhey protected
each other just to survive.
Following the war, Prager found
his way to America..and began
wo rking his way up the business
ladder in tfue Horatio AJger,
ali·American dream style. He
molded hrs now-successful career
under the tulelage of legendary
restaurateur businessman Ken
Hansen, owner of Scandia, Los
Angeles .
.. He was a remarkable man. A
man's man," Prager said or
Hansen. "Women loved him. He
was an artistic chef with great
ima1ination. He was one or a very
few able to combine quality and
quantity in a great restaurant
"Most great establishments
serve 50 or 60 dinners at a sitting.
Scandiadid 600 lunches and 500
dinners daily."
Years of work under Hansen,
and the failure or his first .solo
venture in Westminster in 1977,
brought Prager to Newport. He
was broke and his marriage was in
trouble, but li fe had been much
tougher for this sutvivor of
prisoner of war camps who had
found a career feeding the rich
and famo us.
He landed al 1221 Oceanfront
with the help of banke11-Paul
Nicollelli and a $50,000 unsecured
loan. Later he would expand to his
present location on Newport
Center Drive, under the banner
