A <X'Ording to•surveys, those of us in
the 24-kalat golden yean are the
wealthit.st generation in American
history. l was astonished to learn the
average senior householder has socked
away $~,000 for reiiremcnt. By
comparison, the
~1clntyre nest egg looks
like a reject from a
hummingbird's nest.
Not everyone in my
generation was into
piggy banks. Saving for
your old age wasn't a
vircue among writers,
artists. tighlrope walkers
and other precarious
professions.
The bare-footed muse
v. ho presides over the
creative arts isn't keen
on retirement policies,
stock op11ons or fringe benefits. She
e:ii:pcc1s her converts to find sufficient
reward 1oiling for the perfect metaphor
or stroke of genius. It's a con job: but
occasionally the lady bestows a fortune
on one or her subjects to make it look
easy fo r the rest of her benighted Oock.
Still. the provocative question remains:
t-iow come the Depression Generation -
with only one n1odcst paycheck in 1he
f:.imily -v.as able to squirrel away such
u11press1ve savings. v.·hile their kids, the
best-educated and highest.salaried
gcncr:i.tibn in history, can't meet the
payments o n their sk.i condos?
\Vhilc Mon1 and Dad benefited from
real estate booms, stock market surges,
and lucrative pensions, they made money
the otd.rashioned way. They saved it.
Thrift has an interesting habit or
leap·frogging generations. When one
hoards, the nexl splurges. The Baby
Busters. now in !heir 20s, give evidence
of being as conscrvacivc and thrifty as
their grandparents. having watched their
high·living parents blow their budgets.
D espite their lack of financial
prudence, our spendthrift kiddies
:ircn't ~cstincd to rattle around in '
broken-dov.·n sports cars in their sunset
years. Nor v.·ill thcy have to pawn their
espresso machines to buy 1heir gourmet
delicacies. )i's estimated the average B.B.
v.·ill inherit at leas! fifly grand -or
more. ~1:iny are alre:idy borrowing from
1he family 1ill -l\1om and Pop banks
being an indispensable source fo~instant
cash "llh no collateral but a hug.

hJving the opportunity to 1e5t my
.... ave ring character with a windfall legacy.
My closest brush with wealth was
ha ving a girl friend who inherited a huge
fortune. To help me cope with the news.
which had given my complexion a
greenish pallor, 5he announ<:ed 'with a
pious smile, "Money doesn't make you
happier. II just makes the bad times
easier." She made it sound like a
headache medicine.
At least my husband and I don't have
to worry that our tiny inheritance will
weaken any spine5 or ruin our kids'
moral fiber. Th:lt's a comfort a fprlune
can't buy. ·

mother from Illinois
moved to Belgium with her family
in 1965, she was riddled with
concerns aboul how 10 shop for
food, clothes, even furniture for
her new home without knowing
the language.
But she got a friendly boost
from the wife of the town's mayor,
who opened up her home to the
family"an?thelped Gray-Sinith
shop everyday uritil she ma1uered
a few key phrases.

about it or be excited,"
Gray·Smith said.

Now the Lake Forest resident is confronted with
challenge again.
This time, the mother of four grown children is
taking on a new post as head of the Costa Mesa
Senior Center. She begins her new job today.
Besides orchestr:Jting the everyday operations o,f
the city's ycar·and-a-half-0ld senior center, the
board of directors is counting on her to bolster
funding to make the center sclf·suppbrting.
Currently, half of ill $450,000 budget is 5upported . .

Belgium.

"I've always been an editor of
something or olher," explains Jane,
whose work has been published In the
Saturday Evening Post. She and her
husband write four different
newsletters. As a team, she docs most
of the writing and editing w~ile he
types, copy edits and writes. Together
they keep up the membership lists and
do all the labeling and mailing. l)ieir
newsletters include: Newport-Mesa
Friends of the Library, ·the California
Retired Teachers Associatton, the
Costa Mesa Historical Sociel)'
Newsletter and American Associations
Retired Persons, where Dave was
president fo r two years and Jane
currently serves as president.

Jane is a volunteer a1 the Costa
Mesa Sentor Center and Dav; teaches
wire craf1. jewelry making and gives
talks on lapidary. For seven years,
Dave edited the newsletter for the
C.osta Mesa Lapidary and Minerals
Society.

In World War Il, D ave, an airborne
radar specialist, met J ane when he was
being trained at Harvard and nearby
MIT. She was in the Navy serving as a
communicattons officer and graduated
in 1hc first class of Women Appointed

him. Afler the war, Jane worked as a
French teacher at Orange Coast
College and Hunlington Beach High

accident left him paralyzed. Together

COSTA MESA -City officials have been awarded $32,000
from the slate lo start a city wide used oil recyt:ling program.
The city's public services department plans to use 1he money 10
pay incenti,·es to local businesses to start collecting and recycling
oil as 14·cll as educate residents abou1 the right and wrong way to
dispose of used automobile oil.
"Dumping il in the trash, the storm drains and lhc streets -
1ha1's illeg:il," said Carol Jacobs, an adminis1rativc assistant for
public services.
Jacobs said there arc about siA businesses throughout the city
1hat currenllf offer a place lo dump oi l for recycling. Officials
hope: 10 use financial inducements to bolster that number .

within a mile where they can lake their oil," she said.

Deere wasn't the only Sai lor to lose in

to Irvine wrestlers in the quarterfinals,
while Drew Lorentzen (130) was disquali-
