Ei&hteen-year· old Ila Borders became the first woman in colle&e hj tory to play men's baseball. She olso happened to throw a complete-game victory, allowing only one run on five hits. Editor's Notebook I've been to hundreds of sports events - including a World Series, NBA championship, and a Super Bowl -and this one ranked near the top. Borders reminds you of Tommy John, the major J le11ue pitcher who couldn•t • break a pane of &11 wi1h his fastball bul (oolcd ruuen with chances of speed, breaking balls and accuracy. The best line during the whole event came after Borden struck out a Oarcmont-Mudd-Scripps cleanup hitter with a m:sn on to get out of an inning. M the batter whiffed badly at a cbangeup, a fan in the bleachers yelled at him. ''Yoo better smite 'cause you're going to be on ESPN all night .•. " The next best line c:ame from a member of the women's basketball team, who ~ondered out loud why her team -at 20-6 -couldn't drnw this kind of crowd, which spilled out of the wooden bleachers and surrounded the baseball field .
