Stories from thi sei

There are no sho rtage of
stories from the sea. And
we'd like you to share them
with us and our readers.
Funny. Tense. Poignant.
We'd like to hear them all.
If you have a story to share,
call up our Readers Hotline
at 642-6086 and leave your
name and number and a
convenient time for one of
our staff writers to call you
back. We'll help get your
story -in your own words
into the Daily Pilot in an
upcoming series of Stories
from the Sea.

E xoept for that bank

in '72, I don't think I've
ever f eh as un-American as I
ditl last week.
It happened Friday night. Well,
Editor"f
Notebook
it actually
happened
Friday day. Dut
it was televised
Friday night.
America's
sweetheart,
Nancy Kerriga n,
skated
phenomenally
on the ice in the
Hamar Olympic
Amphitheatre.
She wa!> the
leader going
into the
freestyle pon ion
of the Win ter Olympic women's
figure skating competition, so it
seemed she had a lock on the
gold medal.
Then Oksana Baiul or the
Ukraine took the ice and gave a
mesmerizing perfo rmance. By the
narrowest of margins, she took
the gold away .from Kerrigan,
who settled for silver.
There was an uproar. "She wuz
robbed," the mostly American
pundits shrieked. Kerrigan, who
up until that point redefined
class, got a little snotty herself.
Admittedly, I'm no expert on
women's figure skating. Women's
figures, maybe: Which brings me
to Katarina Witt (in my dreams).
Now cut that out! This is about
New England 'Patriot Kerrigan
and the best Ukrainian orphan
on ice Oaiul.
The way 1 saw it on a 24-inch
screen, Kerrigan was brilliant.
Out, .wit h apologies to that old _
line about art, I may not know
SOCllTY
figure skating, but I know what l
like. Based on what I saw and
fell after the two skaters• skated,
I thought Baiul was far and away
the best. Jn fact, I was surprised
she was not the leader after the
technjcal program.
I know, I know. Nancy was
' near-flawless. She changed a
planned triple flip into a double,
but hit that jump and her other
five triples -a feat no other
womaCMlccomplished.
Baiul hit her jumps, too. How-
ev,er, according to what Kerrigan
has been told (as of her last CBS
interview she hadn't seen the
Ukrainia n's performance), her
16-year-old foe twice landed on
two skates instead of the prefer-
red one. If proper deductions had
been levied against Baiul, Kerr i-
&.an allegedly would .have ~on.
Again, I don't know a lutz
from a sow cow (I don't even
/
know if that's how you spell sow
cow). I do know that if I had
been a judge, I would have
knocked points qff both their
scores for skating to show tunes
and Neil Diamond dreck.
A s near as 1 can figure about
figu re skating. there are
certain jumps in which you're .
supposed to maintain for a
certain number or revolutions if
you expect to m~dal. Whoever
docs the most of those jumps
without falling is usually the
winner. Kerrigan's iQformation
about Baiul's jumps not
withstanding, it seemed to me
they both cleanly hit about the
same number of difficult jumps.
Determining the winner came
down to everything in between.
And .it was there that Nancy was
fancy, but Baiul conqver~d fhe
ice. .
Kerrigan did everything she

• On the other side of the blade,
