The farm was granted a stay of execution

Contracting

services to
save $92,000
Along the .trall
Costa Mesa officials expect to
save close tq $92,000 a year now
that the City P,uncil has approved
purctiasing lan~scaping services•
from a private contractor. ·
The council at its Monday
meeting awarded a $35,400
contract to Accurate Landscape
and Maintenance Corporation in
Orange to maintain trees, shrubs
and plants at various locations
around the city, including Victoria
Street, around the fire stations and
at the job center.
Until now, a skeleton city crew
or people working off jail time
took care of the city's landscaping.
City officials say the contract will
s;we the city $80,000 fonhe
upkeep qf Victoria -the cost of
hiring three more «~mployees to
maintain the gardening.
"We will be kicking this thin~ off
next Monday," said Dave Alkema,
parks superintendent. "Right now ·
Victoria is not being maintained at
a respectable level."
The contract comes with the
partial blessing of the city's
employees association. Association
President Bill Folsom says the
move will save money, but he's
skeptical about what kind of
bargain the city is getting.
"The bid is so low, we don't see
how they can put enough
manpower out there to keep
(Victo-ritt-) up," Folsom said.
Jn o ther action, the council:
•Approved an ordinance that
would allow the council to set fees
for permits and services by a
resolution. The council also
approved a separate resolution that
set suggeste,d fees for the polie&
and fire department to allow them
to increase charges for such things
as false alarms, reports and adult
entertainment permits;
• Appointed members to the
city's five different committees and ·
directed staff to take applicatiOns
for a new appointment to the
Parki, and Recreation Commission
to replace John De Witt, who ..
resigned from his post in February.

Gloomy, overcast skies did not keep bikers away from the Santa Ana River
bike trail Tuesday afternoon near Adams Avenue in Costa Mesa.
Eighty stitches needed to
close shark-bite wound
Friends say a Santa Ana
man is recovering at home
after he was bit Monday by
a shark he was trying to
remove from an aquarium
at a Costa Mesa nightclub.
Steven Rosenbloom, 34,
was released Tuesday from
Hoag Hospital in Newport
Beach, where he underwent
~urgery to his left arm,
which was billen by a 4·foot
lemon shark at the Shark
Club.
Rick Barboza, who was in
the aquarium when the
accident occurred, said it
took about 80 stitches to
mend Rosenbloom's arm.
Barboza added doctors said
there was no nerve damage
and he should be able to
return to work in about
three weeks.
Rosenbloom and Barboza
work for Reef Systems of
Westminster and Chino
Hills. The company was
hired by the club to lift the
shark and another from the
tank so the pair could be
donated to the Stephen
Birch Aquarium at UC San
Diego's Scripps Institute of
Oceanography.
During the lift, witnesses
said, the lemon shark
somehow wrangled its way
out of the net that was
restraining his head and, in
a defensive move, turned
around and took a bite out
of Rosenbloom's arm as he
held its tail. ·
Hospital officials wouldn't
comment on his condition
at his request. He also told
Criends and ea-workers that
he was refusing all interview
requests.

We could call it Neuro-Disney.
And let's toss in another dwarf

Disney's image of purity

like a naughty word.
With visions of all that

Snow White adopt another dwarf

Well, let's not stand in the way

Newport's Biking: .... ~. al • sand ... ,

Bv DAVID Hsan, STAIP W1UTt:a
LITTLE CORONA BEACH -
Residents here knew the sand
wa!>n't disappearing into the shoes
of beachgocrs. Nobody has feet
that big.
But as they watched their beach
c,lowly disappear, unearthing big
boulders they never had seen
before, they began to ask
qucs1ions1 ·
Where's our beach going? lf the
ocean steals our sand, will it ever
come back?
To someone who's not -an
engineer, those questions are
difficult to answer.
"I don't know what people
expect us 10 do if na ture wants to
take the sand away and put it back
later," said Newport Beach City

California public school students
were simply not prepared for the
radically different math 5ests, ac-
cording to Anderson.
And becaU!.e CLAS scores were
s late in being reported,
Newport-Mesa and other Cali·
fornia school dist ricts have lillle

poor statewide performances in
math. The next CLAS tests are
only two months away.
"I don't expect a monumental
difference in next year's score,"
Anderson said. "But by the follow-

The California Learning Assess-

. to Kapus. She says he's one of her
, hardest-working students.
"Planting is kind of fun, once you
ge t into it," Vu said. "My mom
' loves to plant, so she got me
' interested in it when I was young."
Kapus says she understands the
district's decision, but she is sad
about the loss of a most unusual
resource. And she expects to be
laid off after this school year.

represents Corona del Mar. ''The
beaches come and go. It depends
on the tidal action."
But to geophysicist Craig Everts,
who bas been hired by Newport
Beach to come up with a "Sand
Management Plan," there has got
• to be a way to keep the
. sun-splashed beaches from
washing out to sea.
' A month ago, 'he planted stakes
in the sand ore the coast of Little
Corona. For the next few years,
he'll watch it come and"80, trying
to find patterns in its movement.
"The city\is very interested iQ
finding out wha t1s going on with
their beaches, and arc spending a
lot of energy on it," Everts said.
Although Evert$ has been hired
by the city, the information l)c •
·collects will be shared with other
coasta.l cities in Orange County, as
well as the county Environmental
Management Agency and U.S. •
Army Corps of Engineers.
Together, those agencies arc
funding for the CAP tests in 1990.
After disappointing CAP scores
revealed "grave concerns" about
writing some years ago, the school
district placed additional emphasis
on wri ting skills and has subse-
quently excelled, according to
Anderson. "Writing is now our
highest area of testing," she said.
Anderson says the district will
now rethink the way it teaches
math to its students.
The math problems on the
CLAS test are a significant depar-
ture from traditional math assess-
ment tests. The new.problems test
students' understanding of math·
cmatic principles rather thon re-
quiring simple computation.
Newport-Mesa school district
Superintendent Mac Bernd point·
ed out that despite the unsatisfac-
tory math scores, the school dis-
trict exceeded the state average in
all testing categories.
And Newport-Mesa students
scored higher than students in
comparable districts in eight out of
nine categories.
"This ,is an indication of a dis-
trict that wants to be the best,"
Bernd said, "and is not satisfied." -'

One woman wouldn't even walk
out to her front gate Tuesday,
shouting .across the yard fr0m her

discuss the killing.
"I lhink everybody is feeling
pretty nervous," another neighbor
confided. "We're all looking out
for each other."
Van Uden's dtiughtcr-in-law
also declined to discuss the killing.
"Al! I can say is that it has been
an extremely difficult time for us,"
she said, breaking into tears dur·

Police say Van Uden, who is the

they might be able to adopt laws
that will help keep it on the

A bluff erosion ordinance, for
instance, could prohibit builders
from destroying bluffs which pour

"Right now, we don't know
what's happening in a lot of
locations along the coast, and
we're trying to find these answers
in the scie ntific studies we're
doing," Rossmiller said.
John Wolter, a city engineer,
said the city has spent about

to Mayor Genis and the council
supporting it. l was amazed there
should be an controversy at all."
O'Neil said she and a handful of
friends attended the meeting only
to find there were many more
there who shared her view.
Jim Meehan, who came to the
meeting with eight people from
the Costa Mesa Republican As-
sembly, said they anticipated a
heated discussion on the matter.
"We went because we thought
(Genis) needed the support of
people who were friendly toward
the Abstinence Week," Meehan
said.
He later asked everyone in the
audience in support of Genis to
stand, prompting most in the
council chambers to rise.
"I have to admit, this is a very

said.
After the meeting, she said she

Doctors who tes~ified at the trial
said Sanchez narrowly survived the
brutal assault. Chances are, he will
be confined to a wheelchair for
life.
James Madrid, 18, and David
Barseghian, 19, were sentenced
earlier this year to two years in
state prison for helping to kick
Sanchez before he was dragged
into the van. And a 15-year-old
was sent to the California Youth
Authority until age 25.
Hector Alvarez, 18, is awaiting
trial on the same charges Surdi
has been convicted of.
Warrants are still out for the ar-

Wolter said. "When we know
these things, it helps us manage
the sand in a more efficient way."
The city has been mediating
nature's battle with the beaches
since the 196Ch, he said.
During fierce stonns in the
1960s, beaches in West Newport
would disappear by as much as 50 ·
feet per day, Wolter said. The city
built several man-made jetties
between the Newport Pier and
Santa Ana River to control the
erosion.
In the 1970s, crews dumped
sand up the coast on Sunset .
Beach, knowing that eventually it
would trickle back to Newport.
A few years ago, when residcntS

Newport girls
stop Lompoc,
roll into semis
._ Schutz the · ringleader Tuesday
with career-high 14 points, and
super defense on Lompoc star.
BY BARRY FAULKNER, Srous Wiuna. •
' LOMPOC ~ Newport
Harbor High Coach Shan-
non Jakosky worried over
the wee kend if the minds
of her multi·sport athletes
would begin wandering
away f(om basketball, toward other sports.
The Sailors indeed appeared preoc·
cupied by another sport Tuesday night,
but Jakosky wasn't about to complai n.
"This game was more like football than.
basketball," said Jakosky of the Sailors'
helmet-headed toughness in earning a 49·
43 win mer host Lompoc in the opening
round of the ClF Division Ill Southern
California Regionals.
"Gina {Head ) said last week she had
thought about playing running back or
noseguard, and she playe d like it tonight,"
Jakosky continued. "Melissa (Schutz) was
out there fighting, and Diatlne (Pulido)
was tough all night."
The determined Sailors (23-7) scored
eight unanswered points to erase an 1J·8
Braves' lead, then maintained their focus •
and the lead the rest of the way.
The victory, Harbor's first-eve r in re·
gional play, put the Tars into Thursday
night's semifinal at Santa na High of San-
tee, an 86-46 victor over Dinuba.
Schutz, a 6-foot junior center, scored a
career-high 14 points, but contr ibu ted
even more on the defensive end. She held
6-foot-2 All·CIF senior Kim Wuest to 14
points (7 of 19 from
the field) and just six
rebounds.
Wuest, a fou r-year
starter, came in av-
eraging 18.8 points
and 16.5 boards, the
latter the second-best
in the entire Southern
Section. Wuest, the
section's leading free-
throw shooter' at 80%, Melissa Schutz did not earn a single
foul shot.
"Melissa is a stud," said Jakosky. "She
played 32 minutes of solid defense and
made Wuest work for everything she got.
She also hit her first five shots. It was arr
excellent game."
Schutz, who finished 6 of 9 from the
field and 2 of 2 from the line, also added
a team-high seven rebounds to postpone
joining the Sailors' swim team for at least
three more days.
"I'm still waiting for swimming," said a
smiling Schutz, who squeezes basketball
around a demanding club volleyball prac-
tice regimen.
"It fell great to have a game like 1 did
tonight," added Schutz, who was not
aware of Wuest's All-CIF credentials. "l
just kn ew she was their leading scorer."
Schutz got inside defensive help from
Puli do and others, which allowed Lom-
poc's 5-8 junior Colleen Mitchell to amass
17 points and 11 rebounds.
But Lompoc's three other starters,
under Newport's man-to-man defensive
blanket, combined for just 12 points, half
of which came on desperation three-
pointers late in the fotl'th quarter.
"Our plan was to help out inside and
pressure them on the perimeter," said Ja-
kosky, who watched Heads, Geneveieve
Evarts and Mandy Clayton hold Lompoc's
back court to 2-oC~l 7 shooting.
Evarts, who aggravated a lower back in-
jury midway through the second quarter,
fought through it .and scored 16 points.
Heads, who administered a lesson on
physical pw.._ finished with eight points,_
six assists, five steals and five r~bounds.
"Gina is our defense," Jakosky· said.
Pulido, in addition to her strong de-
fensive help, chipped in five points and
five boards, while Clayton scored Harbor's
final four first-half points with Evarts on
the bench.
Lompoc (24-5, the Southern Section
UI-A champion) rallied to within 32-30
and 34-32 to ignite a vocal crowd. But
Newport ended the Draves' 17-game win-
niog streak by draining ·9 of 14 free throws
in the final eight minutes.

NEWPORT DEACH -
Luckily, seasons aren't
made in a day. Newport •
Harbor High can be thank-
ful. I
"It's too early to hang
our heads," said Sailor baseball coach
Kirk Bates, whose host squad absorbed a
16·0 defeat Tuesday against Esperanza in
the second round of the Nc\\port Elks
Tournament.
The Aztecs (2-0), defending ClF South-
ern Section V-A champions, scored in
every inning, took advantage of five Sailor
errors and six wild pitches, and used four
'pitchers who combined on a one-hit ~ut·
out with 12 strikeouts.
Overmatched? That's putting it mildly.
"Esperanza, the defending CIF cham-
pion, lost seven players from last year and '
it's still a heck of a tea m," Bates said.
"The question 1 ask, is can· we bounce
back on · Thursday (against Orange or
Capistrano Valley)?" ·
There were some discoveries. Newport
Harbor found a relief pitcher (shortstop
Brett Hlista) and a righ t fi elder (Dave
Snowden) with a strong :inn.
On a ny ball to ri ght in the first inn ing,
Snowden threw out Esperanza's Jeremy
Viscusi at the plate to end a four-run
Aztec inning.
"It was a big play, a good play, and
(catcher) Zach Diehl did a good job
blocking the plate," Oates said.
Hlista, following starter C~ris GroJach
and reliever Todd McM inimeril, pitched
two solid innings, and was the only Sailor
hurler to not walk anybody.

Senior~ Jay Berg-Hansen (6-foot-2, 215

Distance running is another powerful
element for the Sailors, led by senior
Trent Bryson and juniors Aaron Ward,
Ryan Adams and Shahram Dczhad, all of
whom performed well last fall in cross
country for running coach Dim Barry.
Senior Chris Edwards, coming out late

in the CIF Southern Section track and field

That could change this year.
Boyce was a three-event Sea View League champion as
a M>phomore, winning the 100 and 200 meters and long
jump. Soccer commitments, however, forced him to miss
the CIF prelims. ·
Last year, a day before the league finals, Boyce came
