Georgia Ethier, left, and Joan White share memories of their jobs as secretaries at City Hall. They'll both be retiring soon.
· THE GOODBYE GIRLS
Two secretaries for Costa Mesa's city manager will retire soon,
taking a combined 35 years of experience with them
BY MAJlNl.B M CLEOD, STAFP Wann
I t's hard on an operation anytime a
longtime employee leaves, so it will be
twice as hard on the city of Costa Mesa
when two secretaries with a combined 35
years of experience retire within a couple
weeks or each other.
In that time, Georgia Ethier and Joan
White, secretaries who tend to daily tasks
for City Manager Al!an Roeder and the
City Council, have seen their share or
changes in and around the city.
Now Ethier and White arc becoming a
part of history th'emselvcs as they retire
from City Hall. The pair nnnounced their
intentions to retire Jost year when the ciry's
employee association offered an enrly
retirement program. to avert the planned
layoffs or 33 employees. White leaves on
March 18, Erhirr .A:pril 1.
But the departure or the women, who
were important to Roeder duri ng his
formative years as n city manager, leaves
him feeling bittersweet about the city's
policy on downsizing.
"You can't replace all that experience,"
he s.aid. "It's hard to lead by example."
Ethier, a 54·y~r·o1d Annhcim resident,
lived most of her life in Costa Mesa and
landed her first-ever job at City Hall in
1959 after a friend, who had applied for a
job there, encouraged her to apply too.
"The City Hall I started out in is where
the Senior Center is now," Ethier said.
"It's grown leaps and bounds since then."
She worked in different departments, but
eventually ended up working in the city
manager's office as a secretary under the
city's second manager, Bob Unger.
"Dorothy Dietzel was the city manager's
i..ecrctary at the time and I owe everything
1 know to her," Ethier said.
She left the city in 1974 because ner
husband's job forced the family to move to
Massachusetts. She returned in 1982 after
receiving a call from ll}en·City Mana~cr
Fred Sor!>Obal, who nsked if she would be
returning to the area soon and if she would
be il'llerested in working for the city again.
"ll was completely out or the blue and
as luck would have it, we were coming
back," Ethier s:iid.

Cope said the neighbors don't
have anything to worry about.
"There ·will be intense supcr.i-

ents to pnrticip3tc in being a good
neighbor. It's part of the pro.
gram."
She said out of approximatety
13 st:iff members, four will live at
the facility.
"At a low cost, people can come
here and get exactly the s:ime
thing they get in a hospital, except
in a residenti31 environment where
they're going to le:irn living :ind
life skills," Cope s:iief.
She said the average cost for a
40-day stay at Turning Point will
be about S6,000. Some insurance
companies will pay for it, she said.
Once the business gets going,
Cope s:iid she hope.s to offer
schol:irships for people who need
trc:umenl but can't afford it.
N cighbors say there haven't
been any serious crimes re·
lated to the center -now or in
the past -but they're concerned
that having a home for rcco, ering
alcoholics in an expensive residen·
ti:il area could lower property \al·

there was ''a lot of comings and

to remain anonymous said she's
also a reco\'ering alcoholic, a grad·

To celebrate this accomplish-

,.. closed, the
parking lot empty. That's amazing
in and of itself. Soon, shiny new
limousines would pull up, lining
the front of the locked store.
"Boy, I know Hollywood is our
theme, but I didn't expect so many
guests to arrive in limos," said
patron Mike Hanvood, waiting at
the curb with his very glamorous
"starlet" wife, Ann, outfitted in
creme-colored Chanel, her
platinum hair, which is usually
pulled back tight, falling down
over her shoulders.
The limo doors opened. W.C.
Fields came out of the first one,
Harpo Marx exited the next. John
Wayne appeared from another.
The star look-a-likes opened' the
rear doors of the cars and ushered
the curbside crowd in. Soon, a
procession of steel flowed through
the deserted lot, heading through
the parking structure, down an
alley to ll basement door. The rear

perfect game. Nol only was his family iii at-

other vacation. The four-year varsity starter
took matters into his own hands, -striking out
11 Foothill Knights in CdM's 1-0 victory in the consolation . I
semifinal baseball game of the Newport Elks Tournament.
"I was just as excited for both of my parents as l was for
myself, because they have supported me all the way
through high school," MacMillan said. "I'm just as excited
seeing their reaction, watching their son out there. My
greatest supporters are my family, with my brothers and my
mom coming out to the games." _
MacMillan, who recently joined the baseball team after
·· leading the CdM basketball squad to the ClF semifinals,
needed only 75 pitches to put away the visiting Knigh_ts.
The senior pitcher/shortstop was clearly in command, strik·
ing out five straight batters from the fourth through the
. s~xth innings. MacMillan ended the game in dramatic fash-
ion with a called third strike against Foothill's Mike ford.
The victory evened his season record at 1-1.
"This was my best pitching performance in high school,"
MacMi11an said. "The coaching staff did a grcnt job keep·
ing me focused on the mound. l f eh real confident tod:w

Ne,o,.port Harbor I ligh girls "'
coach Shannon Jakosky couldn't resist sa-
voring most of Thursday night.
In their 22nd road game of the year,
against the third-ranked team in the state
Division Ill poll, the Sailors took it up yet
another notch to record a 63-51 ClF
Southern California Regional semifinal
win at Santana High.
, "Whal more could you ask for?" said
fakosky, who will ask the winningest team
in school history to do it once more Satur-
day at 9 a.m. in the regional final against
Brea Olinda, the second·ranked team in
USA Today's national poll.
"We're sti ll getting better," said Jako-
sky, who co uldn't hold back the joy of
watching her Sailors pass, shoot, defend,
und simply compete their way to The
Pond.
"I w:is so proud," said Jakosky, who
predicts a different scenario against 31-0
Orea than in the Ladycats' 70-40 victory in
the Southern Section title game March 5.
"It's fantastic. to get another shot at
Brea," Jakosky said. "We learned our les-
son the first time (when Brea led, 17-2,
after eight min.utes) that we have to come
out tough."
The Tars (24-7) did just .that, netting 10
of 15 first-quarter shots to build a 21-12
lead over the st unned Sultans (26-4). The
Sailors drilled half of their 18 field-goal
attempts in the second quarter to boost
the lead to 43-32 at the half.
The Tars then used superior perimeter
defense to survive foul trouble and chilly
second-half shooting· to earn the "short"
road trip to Anaheim after logging nearly
700 miles in two regional wins this week.
"We understand the game," said senior
Gina Heads, who recalls the less-than-
textbook execution of her freshman year
on the varsity.

fellow senior guard Genevieve Evarts with
a team-high 16 points. The 5-foot-4 stand-

assists before fouling out with 2:06 left.

eight in the opening period. Junior center
Melissa Schutz had eight points and .seve n
boards while Cara Heads, Tina Bowman
and Laura Wilson all added valuable min-

Harbor hit 5 of 7 shots to start the sec-
ond quarter for a 32-14 edge and the Sul·
tans, renowned for their three-point
shooting, couldn't find the range against
the hawking Sailor def enders. Santana
wound up just 1 of 23 from behind the
three-point arc and the Sailors consis·
tently swept the boards.
"We do normally shoot be tter, but
Newport played great defense," Santana
Coach Wade Vickery said. "They just
didn't allow us to spot up."
A vocal home crowd and a· relentless
full-court . press put the Sultans on the
verge of several scoring runs. But their in-
ability to hit a momentum-building trey
prevented them from scoring more than
five consecutive points.

and just six pitches to record three buts in
the fourth. MacMillan put everything to-
gether in the fifth inning, striking ou t the
side, with two batters looking at the third
strike.
Sea Kings have scored just three runs on
five hits in the last two games, something
that concerns Head Coach Matt Lundin.
"It's kind of sad when you need a per·
feet game to win," Lundin said. "Today
we actually did a better job getting guys
Oil base, but then we couldn't get them
home. We have got to start gelling that
done. Dul the pitching and the defense,
once agnin, wins you gnmes."
I'm helping defending it. It was a great
pick on (first baseman Kevin) Stuart's
part, too."
The Sea Kings scored their lone run in
the third inning, when junior Myles Davis
led off with n double. Davis advanced to
third on a passed ball and sco red on
David Milton's wild pitch. The run, which
was unearned, ruined a line performance
by Milton. He allowed only three hits over
si.x innings, striking out seven nnd walking
six.
two wnlks and an error, but second base-
m:in Mike Mortenson popped out to third
fo r the final ou t.
Despite the missed opportunities.
Lundin was cle arly pleased by the per-
fo rmances from the Sea Kings' pitchers.
"My pitching toach, Brett Osborne, hns
done an outstanding job with the pitching
staff," Lundin said. "They're throwing a
lot of strikes and they're going arter hit-
ters. Our defen se is playing well simply
because the pitchers are throwing strikes.
When the guy puts the ball in play the de-
fense is ready, because the pitcher has not
been throwing a lot of balls."

Af-tcr inducing a ground out to sh ort·
stop Jeff Bowman and a pop-up to start
the seventh inning, MacMillan concen·
trated on Knights' third bnsemnn Ford.
"The coaching staff does a great job keep-
ing me focused out on the mound," Mac-
Millan said. "I was just thinking of him as
another batter. The coaching staff di d a
grent job of keeping my confidence up."
Lost among the excitement or Moc-
Millan's flawless pitching performance was
CdM's continuing ofCensive problems. The
Jndeed, it was CdM's flawless defense
which helped MacMillan maintain his per-
fect game. Bowman hnd to range deep
into the hole to throw out c:itcher Ryan
Voelkl to end the SL'tth inning.
"(The perfect game) crossed my mind a
linle on the ground ball," Bowman said.
"Nobody on my teams has ever lhrown a
perfect game, and I'm hnppy to be a part
of thnt. If (I'm) not pitching it, at least
Twice the Sea Kings loaded the bases
with two outs, only to have the rallies
stopped by clutch pitching. In the fourth
inning, CdM filled the bases with two
walks and an infield single by Bryson
Groat. But Bowman fouled out to the
catcher to end' the inning. Corona loaded
the bases again the following inning on
Lundin joined in the praise of Mac-
Millan's performance. "With pitche rs
we're talking a!->out working nhead, throw-
ing strikes, and picking the tempo of the
game up. Dan did just that today. And he '
Lundin will prob:ibly not be concerned
