HOAG HOSPITAL

With increased
longevity, a retired
husband can be
underfoot raiding
the fridge for 30
years. His once
happy, foo tloose
homemaker,
overnight
transforms into a ·
short-order chef,
gin rummy partner and pep talk
thcnipist.
An aerial view of Hoag Hospital in 1952, the first year for the Newport Beach facility.
Retirement is one of the major
hurdles of marriage. A woman
relinquishes time to herself to puller
around the house. It's equally
difficult for her mate who is
demoted from middle management

expense account.

like a condiment. It should be used
to navor a marriage, not smother it.
Sixty-ei.ght physicians ·and 60 employees were on hand ..
for the hospital 's opening on Sept. 15, 1952 .
So how do you keep your vintage
relationship fresh and exciting when
your retired husband is naked out on
the recliner behind the sports pages?
A few ingenious wives have been
working on this universal problem,
and their solutions are worth
reviewing.
The most direct and daring
approach: Move next door to your
husband, which offers the best of
two worlds: Privacy\vith a limited
amount of domesticity.
The innovator of this Good
Neighbor Policy vows il works belier
than one could imagine. She and her
husband's evenings together have the
festivity of a date. Since dinners and
breakfasts arc by invi tation only,
each partner makes an effort to be
entertaining. The husband, in turn,
savors the relaxation of a messy
bachelor pad, with home-cooked
meals on the side.
When Hoag Hospital
opened 1952, the
one-story structure had 75
beds, 68 physicians and 60
employees to care for the seven
people who were admitted the
first day.
Concerned that accident victims
in the coastal O range County area
were .not receiving adequate
medical treatment, Rev. Raymond
I. Brahams organized a committee
to find land and raise money for
the construction of a hospital.
With contributions from locat·
churches and the Hoag
Foundation, the 60-acre,
undeyeloped piece of land
overlooking Pacific Coast Highway
and the Newport Bay was bought
for $20,000.
Another successfu l homemaker
advises interesting your retired
spouse in a compelling hobby th at
takes him out of the house all doy -
or wi th luck -a few weeks. She
claims she's had ample time for
herself ever since her husband joined
a hang gliding club that has
competitive meets all ove r the
country.
The Hoag family contri\>uted
the additional money needed to
complete the facility and on Sept.
15, 1952, Hoag Hospital opened
its doors. The non-profit hospital
currently has 417 beds, a cancer
center and a va riety of specialized
diagnostic and therapeutic
services.
One of the first patient rooms at Hoag in 1952. The hopital opened
wi th 75 beds, there are 417 today.
-By N:m cy Ch eever
According to f cminine polls, the
most intractable and difficult retired
spouse is a dominating CEO, the
master of corporate take-overs. He
applies his expertise to manl!ging the
home office, ignoring the principal
share holder, his wife.
The only recourse fo r th e Lillie
Woman is to take a job and get out
of the house -wit h the proviso of a
monthly stockholders meeting.
There's an urgent need in this
country for retirement duplexes. The
wife resides upstairs and the
husband down. Close enough to stay
in touch, but far enough for privacy
-without having to hide in the
shower.

.. The overage person is finally
realizing that it takes more to by
in good shape, rather than be (n
cardiovascular shape or strength
shape, and that's why cross
training's so big," said Doug
Misterly, a ·Newport Beach
triathlete. "If you're doing some
cardiovascular workout and some
strength-training workout, the
combination of both is goi ng to be
the ultimate in fitness. Plus, with
the pressures and demands of the
90s in business nnd the work
place, people are having to work
more hours and they need st ress
relief. They need to be at the top
of their game for work, and being
in good shape allows them to do
so.
"I think part of it is education
from the media," continued
Misterly. "You've got so many of
these companies coming out with
sports machines, nnd along with
that comes some good education.
That's the good part of all the
commercials and advertising, right
down to the different diets. h's
just a continuous education. h's
not just in sports, it's everything.
For a while, you thought you've
got to be in strength training, then
it was cardiovascular shape, but
now it's both to be in ultima te
shape, along with nutrition. To tie
it all in, you need nil three."
Kamins ki, also a girls' varsity
swim coach .at Costa Mesa High,
urges total fi tness to her students.
"The emphasis now is on cross
training," said Kaminski .. ~

aren't necessarily training for

"Cross training started to
become popular the last two or
three years, and now it's started to
trickle down to the average
person. When people were getting
into specifics, there were injurie s,
specifically in the aerobics
industry, because people were
overtrai ning their muscles. When
step aerobics were developed,
rather than aerobics, people
thought it was the .greatest thing in
the world. •
"Out what was happening when
people were stepping on benches·

Kaminski, a former UCLA

has become popular with men.
Triathlons arc also becoming
more popular, with competitors

earning the victory on the mound by al-
lowing no hits in 2¥.l scoreless innings, as
Newport Harbor High defeated host Mis-
sion Viejo, 4-3, in the sevcnth·placc game
of the Newport Elks Tournament.
· Urbnn, 2· l, relieved Sailor left-hander
Mike Uuist, a junior making his first start
of the season, with one out in the fifth,·
then promptly got out of the inning with a
ground ball double-play.
''We had another freshman in there at
~econd b:i~e. Jo~iah frcdiksen, and you
~hould've seen him on the pivot," Sailor
Co:ich Kirk Dates said of the inning·
cm.ling double·pl:iy.
In the seventh, following back-to-back
singles by pinch-hitter Chad Coluccio and
Scott Snnd~trom, Urban was instructed to
swing away in a textbook sacrifice bunt
situation.
"(Oates) called me over and just said,
'Take a big hack, swing for it,' " said
Urban, who ripped his second home run
of the senson to left field. "It was n fast·
ball right down the middle. Actually, I
didn't know it was gone, but after a while,
I saw it and I knew it was gone. I thought
1 just hit a hard line drive. (My learn·
mates) tackled me when I reached home;
everybody was hugging each other, und
giving me five."
for New'j:>ort Harbor (2·2), it was quite
a contrast from its 13-5 loss to Orange on
Thursday, when the· Sailors committed
nine errors. "This was a big, big win for
us," Dntes said. "We pl:.iyed with Orange
for five 1nnings, the No. 1 team in CIF,
nnd struggled defensively, nnd we
bounced back. For us to make nine errors
and then to come back with u solid defen-
sive effort (two errors), it's a very positive
thing for us."
Urban has driven in six of the Sailors'
16 runs this season. On the mound, he
has both of their victories, with an
earned-run average of 1.48 in 14VJ in·
nings. ·

COSTA
MESA -Ask Ii
any softball or
baseball coach,
and they will ex-
plain that the
best offense is n
good defense.
That is precisely wbat concerns
Cosu1 Mesa High Coach Rick
Duonorigo, whose team's defense
was ne<1rly non-existent in the
Mustangs' 11-5 loss to Brethren
Christian in the title game of the
Costa Mesa/Daily Pilot Invita-
tional Softball Tournament Sat-
urday.
"I really want to improve on
the defense this year," Duonarigo
said ofter the game. "We had
enough hits tonight to win, but we
just didn't have the defense to·
win it."
. After falling behind 5-0 to the
Warriors, Costa Mesa looked to
that the Mustangs had come from
behind to defeat Drethrcn Chris-
tian 11-10 for the tourney champi-
onship.
Despite being held hitless for
the first two innings, "th e tena-
cious Mustang offense finally
came to life in the th ird. Keyed
by a two -out, hVo-run si ngle by
shortstop Jen l ong, Costa Mesa
scored four runs to narrow the
gap to one. And when Warrior
right fielder lmari Nicoloff's
throw rolled through the infield in
the fourth inning, Raeme Payne
brought across the ty ing run.
however~ as Brethren Christian
brought in 6-foot·2 junior Drookc
Hofstetter to pitch. The lanky
redhead shut down the Mustangs'
bots, striking out seven over the
final four innings. Costa Mesa did
prove 1-iofstetter to be human,
though, as :,econd ba:,eman Mel-
, bsa McDaniel and center fielder
Tabby Cleveland collecled hits off
I lofl>tctter. The Warriors' ace had
not allowed a hit in her fir:,t 13
innings this season.
The Mustangs' defense proved
to be its downfall, much to Head
Coach Rick Duonarigo's chagrin .•
Costa Meia commitLed five errors
on the day, and its battery com-
bined for four wild pitches and
four passed balls. The miscues re-
sultect in five unearned runs for
the Warriors. Ultimately, the 11·5
loss could be blamed on missed
plays defensively, as much as
Costa Mesa's inability to generate
any offense against Hofstetter.

POSITIONING .INFANTS
IN CAR SEATS
As car buyers and automobile
makers continue to focus their
attention on car safety, air bags
are now coming into widespread
use. Although an air bag is part of
an automobile's passive restraint
system, it sbou1d not necessarily
be viewed passively. Of particular
concern is the case of a
passenger-side air bag deploying
when an infant is placed in a rear
facing child seat on the passenger
side. The National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration warns that a
deploying air bag can push a
rearward-facing inf ant with enough
force to cause a serious head
iniury. To prevent this possibility,
inf ants in car seats should be
placed in the back seat in a
rearward-facing position. This is
the preferred position for children's
car seats, even in cars without
passenger-side a.r .bags.
HINT: By the 1998 model year, a.I
new cars win be req1. red to have
passenger-side air bags
THE DIAGNOSTIC
CHECKUP
Pnor to the l 980's, most car
owners were conditioned to ask for
tune-ups as a means of dealing
with cars that did not run well.
However, the introduction of
computerized fuel and ignition
. systems has rendered the
old-fashioned tune-up obsolete as
a solutton to engine performance
problems. Today, what is know n
as a maintenance tune-up is
performed according to the
dictates of the owner's manual. If
a car 1s not operating proper1y
between maintenance intervals, 1t
is best to ask the auto technician
to perform a d.agnost1c ch~kup.
Not only w I this save on the cost
of a needless tune-up, but lt will
encourage the diagnostician to get ·
to the heart of the problem more
quickly
Modem electronic diagnostic
systems help take the guesswork
out of automotive troubleshooting
and ensure faster, more accurate
maintenance and repairs. C&F has
all the latest technology, and we
