Senior Steve Gonzales, however, made perhaps the
loudest noise in the meet, heaving the discus 169-2, a

top throwers in the CIF Southern Section.
"Last yea r, Gonzales wns just OK in the discus

he's really taken off," Tweit said.
Ward won the 400 in 53.4, senior Trent Bryson was

NEWPORT DEACH -Plenty of atterttion
has circled the high jump pit, and shotput and •
discus rings. ·
But senior track and field standout Lindsey •
Curtis of Newport Harbor High would like lo
see a little more consideration given to the
Sailors' celebrated 400-meter relay team.
"I think it should get more, but people don't talk about it
as much, because it's not an individua l event," said Curtis,
who anchored the Sailors' winning 400 relay (52.8) on Thurs-
day, when host Newport Harbor defeated Irvine, 81-42, in a
girls Sea View League meet.
Newport Harbor, defending league and Southern Section
Division II champion, has won four consecutive league titles
io the 400 relay, with Curtis a member of the past three.
Junior Piper Archibald, junior Misty May and junior Jes-
sica Palanjian ran the first three legs on Newport's relay
against Irvine.
''I think we can do as well as in the past when we start
practicing more," Curtis said. "We've been bouncing around
a fourth person, and we've got Misty second instead of third
this year. Once we figure it out, we'll be OK."
Curtis, the team's returning MVP, and the defending
league champion in the 300 low hurdles, won both the 100
(13.0) and 200 (27.9) against Irvine, but didn't compete in
the hurdles because of shin splints. She will begin running
the hurdles next month at the Pasadena Games.
Senior Gina Heads, competing in her first meet since com-
ing out from basketball, won both the shotput (40-8) and dis-
cus (124-2\.'l). Heads was fourth in the shotput last spring at
the state meet (43-6), and sixth in the discus (139-6), an
event in which she has competed at the state level three years.
May, second in the state high jump last year (5-10). and an
ill-feeling Tina Bowman merely showed up and cl~ared 5-fect
each to tie for first in the high jump Thursday. Bowman is a
two-time slate finalist.
M:iy, asked to do more this year, like run the 400 meters
and the anchor leg of
the Sailors' 1600 relay,
finished first in the 400
(1:01) in her first 1ry this
year. Last week, she was
second in 1he discus.
May is being groomed to
compete at the Clar·
cmont Heptathlon in
June.
