Fund-raising study highlights trends
...,. School district's commissioned report says confidence
must be restored before campaign for money begins.
BY Russ LoAll, STAFF Wann
NEWPORT·MESA -Jn this
week or soul-searching in ·the
Newport-Mesa Unified School
District -inspired by the massive
219-page curr~culum audit report
-there: was yet another revealing
document made public.
The 60-page, fund-raisin& fcasi;
bility study was overshadowed by
the curriculum audit report. But
the\ study, which includes the re-
sults of 56 community interviews
conducted in December and Janu-
ary, is an important part of the
overall picture of the 17,500-
studcnt school district.
J\pproved by the school board
last April at a cost of $33,000, the
study concluded that confidence in
the district must be restored be-
fore :i major fund-raising cam-
paign is begun.
The 'report shows that com-
munity members approve of the
school district's new "open-door"
policies. The report also listed five
"trends" in how the district is per-
ceived by the community:
•There is widespread belief
that gradu:ites from high schools
in this district arc not well pre-
pared to go on to college or to
' perform well ip a viable job. This
theme was repeated frequently
and forcefully.
•Accountability and re"°ards
were two very hot topics. Individu-
als from all groups remarked that,
"Teachers should be rewarded on
the basis of how much their stu-
dents have learned by the end of
the year, not on the basis of how
long they have been in the class-
room."
• Funding equity was viewed as
nn explosive issue. This discussion
reopened wounds regarding the
unification of the Newport schools
and the Costa Mesa schools.
• Many respondents said · that
there should not be a program en-
titled English as a Second Lan-
guage -the title should be En-
glish as a Primary Language.
• Numerous individuals ex-
pressed concern that the vocal
special interest groups would have
nn overwhelming voice in the de-
termination of direction and poli-
cies in t~e district.

A Huntington Beach resident
known for his bronze sculptures
and one of two local artists
recently selected to share the
spotlight at th is year's Orange
Cou nty Fair. His work sho4W be
a perfect fit for the fair theme,
"Saddle Up For Fun."
Gillenwater's excited by the
opportunity and the exposure the
event will bring, since people
generally purchase bronze
sculptures from artists they know
of, he said.
A FAIR APPROACH
Gillenwa ter is no stranger to
the fair.
His "First-Strike Gold Miner"
was purchased by Orange County
Fair officials as part of a
permanent collection, with
limited-edition replicas available
for sale.
And this year, Gillenwater can
be observed creating sculptures
at th e fair.
WI GOT A WINNER
In the vernacular of
ca rniva l-game operators common
at such fai rs, Gillenwater has
been a "Winna', winna',
winnnnna!"
"Last year, l walked off with
several awards, which was very
gratifying," he said. ..
At 1993 's fair he won fi rst
place, sculpture, Juror's Choice
awa rd and first place overall. In
1991 he won first place sculpture
and in 1986 it was. the Purchase
Award.
MOVIN'WIST
Gillenwater began his artistic
career in Ohio as a commercial
artist after studying both
commercial and fine art at Ohio
State University. He worked for
the Weekly Reader, a
publicalion popul ar with school
children, an.d produced
illustrations for children's books,
a weekly cartoon strip and
worked as an illustrator and
photo retoucher in the ae rospace
industry.
But, he moved west Doth
literally and figuratively.
Once Gillenwater hit the
Pacific Coast in 1963, work in
the ge nre of America's West was
just around the ·corner. In 1965,
he moved to Huntingtoh Beach,
began taking art courses at
Orange Coast College and he
was off to the wild wesr.
GOING FOR THI BRONZE
"l was just fascinated by it ,"
he said of working with bronze.
CITYSIDI
"Bronte just sort or grabbed me.
It's a thrill when the thing comes
out of the cast ... if it's really
good, it's whoa, did l do that.
"What 1 do now is work in
cl:iy :ind send it out to the
foundry ond they se nd it back to
me in bronze," Gillenwater said.
"It is very costly. What I'm
producing now for ... bread and
butler sa les run about $900. The
last piece I sold was $5,500. You
allT)ost have to work in great
volume to make any kind or .a
profit for the artist." Presently
his artwork is on exhibit at
AnWorks, Etc. in Fountain

in Laguna Be:ich.

Egg Spectations, located in
Fashion lsland.
In fact, eggs have been stuffed
with everything from baby shoes
to Lakers tickets to money and
even a diamond engagement
ring, according to Trena De
L:imar, the store's interior
designe r and mother of its
fo under.
"One time, for ~ wedding gift,
we put 200 one-doll:ir bills
inside with bows tied :iround
each one and inscribed 'A li11Je

said.
Great Egg Spectations, a
business begun five ye ars ugo by
artist Kristen De Lamar, offers
porcelain clay eggs that are
decorated and filled with items
such as candy, rabbits or
personaf items.
The Easter store offers
prefilled eggs, acryl ic-painted
eggs for display purposes :lnd
personalized eggs.
Great Egg Spectations
donates leftover eggs, as well as
Halloween pumpkins after
October, to the Children's
Hospital of Orange County and
to the Eli Home for abused
women and children.
The store in Fashion Island is
decorated in the Easter spirit
wit h a white picket fence in the
front , white and pink ribbons
draped over it and a sign
reading, "Easter Bunny Please
Stop Herc." There are dozens of
multi-colored eggs with a variety
of beautiful decorations painted
on by various anists, which lends
variety and an interestin g

Newport named a Tree City by
National Arbor Day Foundation
BY DAVID HElTZ. STAH WUTU. DeWitt said the city recently has
embarked on a comprehensive
urban forestry program -some-
thing the Arbor Day Foundation
considers important.

NEWPORT BEACH -New-
port's trees may take a bow.
For the second consecutive yc:i r,
Newport Beach h:is been named a
"Tree City USA" by The National
Arbor Day foundation.
"A community's tree-planting
program ii. a living memorial to
the .citizens' concerns for the qu:il·
itvfOT life," !>aid John Rosenow, ~ found:ition's cxecuiive direc-
tor. "The trees we plant and c:ire
for today will increase property
values, cool :tnd beautify' our cit·
ics, fight pollution, conserve en-
-ergy and give wildlife :l home for
years to come.''
John Conway, Newport's new
urban forester, said it's difficult
for cities -especially in Sout~rn
California -to attain thet.Jf ree
City USA status.
"Only a select few cities get to
be Tree Cities," he said, estimat·
ing that only 30 cities across the
region have been so honored.
Conway, who came to Newport
Beach in December, is the first
urban forester ever hi red by the
ci ty.
Bringing 21 years of tree experi·
ence to the city, he will help plan
Newport's future landscape and
oversee the maintenance of the
city's 20,000 street trees.
") love it here. h's a beautiful
city," he said. "Ni~e urban for·
estry, and the people are very con·
scious of it."
To become a Tree City, a com-
munity must meet four standards:.
a tree bo:lrd or department, a city
tree ordinance, a comprehensive
community forestry program and
an Arbor Day observance.
Costa Mesa applied for the
honor last year but was turned
down because the city failed to
pass a proclamation in observance
of Arbor Day.
Parks commissioner John DeW-
itt said he's confident the city will
get the honor next year. "Costa
Mesa is actually much further
along than mos\ cities in Orange
County," he said of the city's
greening efforts. "Although it may
be difficult to sec."
IBO Ulllll 0 Ul lE
The subject of trees has been a
touchy one recently in Newport.
Late last year, the city awarded
a S350,000 contract to West Coast
Arborists, a private tree-trimming
company. West Coast crews re-
placed eight of the city's 11 trce-
trimmers.
The move to privatize, which
city administrators expect will save
Newport as much as -$135,000 per
year, outraged some residents who
feared the firm's work would be
shoddy.
So far, Conway said he hasn't
heard any complaints about the
quality of West Coast's work.
"They're doing an excellent
job," he s:iid.
