"We can't tell whether things

more hope."
As the tour made its way

more residents gathered to

"This is horrible," Genis sa id
as residents showed her a de-

second floor of one complex.
"They shouldn't even be al-

They walked through alleys

"We were here with the

"A lot or the work tha1 had

But residents said the visit
brought back renewed hope
tha1 conditions in the neighbor·

with police and code enforce-

Erickson asked the building
department officials on the tour
to be sure residents receive
monthly progress reports in En-

status o( tenant complaints.
"Tiiis reassures them that
the city is not abandoning

"We just wapted to hear it

Erickson and Genis.
But Genis stressed that city

"It's the responsibility of ev-

told the crowd. "The tenants

grmroots Airport Working Group
hope to collect at least 20,000 sig-

The Airport Working Group is :i
coalition of homeowners a~ia
tions formed about 10 years ago to
monitor the John Wayne Airport
agreement forged belWeen the ci ty
and the county.
Newport Beach residents have
complained about noise at John ·
Wayne Airport for several years.
As a result, the city struck a deal
with the county in 1985 prohibiting
John Wayne from servicing more
than 8.4 million passengers per
year.
It currently services 6 million,
and Newport officials believe :in
expansion is inevitable without :i •

Dul many south county residents
oppose an airport at El Toro for

The county created its O\\ n

When Carter played
at C.Orona del Mar, he.
was the hack-up middle

first-team All-CIF
selection.
Last weekend at a
club tournament on
campus at UCSB, I ran
into Carter between
classes. It was great to
see how well he was
doing academically with
his business-economics major.
He had to cut our conversation sttort
because he had to go to class. This was
, quite a switch from his attitude toward his
high school classes. It's great to watch
ex-players on their road to success'!
• As I reviewed the statistical leaders
sheet for the Mountain Pacific Sports
Federation (the men's college league). it
was great to sec ex-Balboa Bay Volleyball
Club players listed.
In the hitting percentage category, two
freshmen in the top six arc USC's Eric
Seiffert and UCLA's Paul Nihipali. This
statistic is dominated by middle blockers,
which both Paul and Eric play.
In kill 'J)cr game average, ex-Estancia
star Matt Fuerbringer is the leader with
almost eight kills per game. With the
backrow auack becoming a dominant pan
of the men's game, the players playing
opposite setter are getting most of the kills.

league.
In blocking /I
per game
average,
UCLA's
Nihipali and
UCSB's Reese
are in the top
10. When Carter
played for me, I
used to kid him
about being a
middle hitter,
and not a mid-
dle blocker. He
obviously has
improved his
blocking skills.
Interestingly. the kiU a"9A&•lor leader
Fuerbringer is almost eight per game,
while the blocking average leaden block
less than two per game, and the dig
leader (Dain Blanton of Pepperdine) is
less than three per game.
This is why the men"s game is called a
"sideout game" because the attack is
ahead or the defense (blocking and

that all four girls in the shotput had their best

pretty tough."

shotput (35-8lh) and discus (109-5lh), while jun·

NEWPORT BEACH -You
' want strength? They're the stron-
gest. Distance runners? Two of
them :ire among the best in the
Sea View League. Jumpers and ·
hurdlers? They hold their own. -
Speed? You might have a R,roblem, as New·
port Harbor High's Sailors discovered Thursday
in a Sea View boys dual meet against Sad-
dleback, as the visiting Roadrunners earned a .
69-63 track and field victory after winning the
last event, the 1600-meter relay.
"We need speed," said a disappointed Eric
Tweit, Newport Harbor's coach. "Going into the
meet, I was just hoping to score 60 points or
more. We just didn't quite have enough."
Newport Harbor (3·1 in league), behind 64·63
heading into the ltSOO relay, opened the final
race with a solid 400 meters from Chris Ed-
wards. Aaron Ward struggled to a degree in the
'Second leg, the n Shahram Deuihd gave the Sail-
ors about a six-me1er lead going into the last lap.
Saddleback anchor Mel Le1e, however, among
the best sprinters in Orange County, passed
Newport Harbor's Ryan Adams with 100 meter'S
remaining to give the Roadrunners (2-1) a win·
ning time or 3:40.0.
Newport Harbor's weight-event speciaUsts, led
by discus thrower Steve Gonzales and shotputter
Wade Tift, produced a sweep for 1he Sailors in
both events.
Tif1, who reached a personal best 60-feet, g IO'h·inches on March 10, continued to stay in ~ the high 50s against Saddleback, winning the
< shotput easily with a 58-7 toss. Jay Berg-Hansen ~ was second (54·2); Gonzales third (53-6). = Gonzales, whose best discus throw is 169-2, ~ won that event with a 163-4lh fling, while Tift
~ (148-10) and Berg-Hansen (137-4) followed.
Edwards, running on dirt and against the
wind, defeated Saddlebaclc's Sunny Kelley and
Matt Lete in the 110 high hurdles, sprinting a
season-best 16.1.
ln the high jump, Bowman, a two-time state
finalist. cleared a season-best 5·6, while May,
second in the state last year, vaulted 5-4. Bow-
man, who attempted 5-8 o ce but failed because
of a tender bone in her heal, has a pr of 5-91A.
"They didn't want to jump for height today,
but l pushed them," Sailor jump coach Rick
Foster said. "We•re still at the beginning of track
season, and we're three or four weeks away from
the league fin als, so we don't want 5·10 from
them now, We want to bring them along slowly;
they're both going to be there."
'The real good thing
about today is that all
four girls in the shotput
'\lie need speed.
Going into the meet, I
was just hoping to
score 60 points .or
more. We just didn't
quite have enough.'
"I ran against both of them last year, and they
both beat me," Edwards ~said. "I was expecting
(Lete) to come away with it, but I think he hit
the fi rst hurdle. I've had a tendency to look
around, but today I was trying to keep my eye\
straight ahead. I made myself stare and concen-
trate on the hurdles."
Senior Trent Bryson also had a· big day for the
Sailors, winning the 3200 (10:09.3), after finish-
ing second with a personal best in the 1600
(4:38).
·had their best throws.
Smith won the 1600 (5:31.2) and finished sec-
ond in the 800, while Twist won the 3200
(12:51.0) and was third in the 1600.
