Charlotte, like her famous name
sake in E.Il. White's memorable story,
was no ordinary garden-variety spider.
She fashioned her gossamer creations
into engineering feats greater than
those of the Ma ssachusetts Institute
of Technology. Unlike many poor
artists who can barely afford brushes
& paint, this lady was born with an
endless supply of silken threads for
her dazzling designs.

Theodore Robins poses with some Modef-T Fords. He began repairing the cars locally In 1921 and opened the area's first
Ford agency in 1923. The dealership still bears his name today. ·
. There's a Ford in their past
Theodore Robins opened the area 's first Ford dealership in 1923. When I first beheld Charlotte
swinging perilously through the air in
death-defying bungee leaps, I was
appalled she would risk her life and
eight limb!> for art. The guide lines
anchoring her spectacular web were
three or four yards apart, hardly
necessary to trap a few low-brow flies,
but a tc ::.tament to her grandiose
nrtistry.
His son and grandchildren still operate the business that bears his name
As I stood there, marveling at her
talent, she becnme aware of my
presence. Apprehensive at first, she
fin ally accepted me as a web
connoisseur, nod even signed her
name in the corner of her
masterpiece with a nourishing cross.
A few days later Charlotte and her
creation were gone. I assumed some
art dealer in Beverly Hills had offered
her a one-woman show. Little did I"'
know that my friend, as a gesture of-..;.
affection, had spun '1nother web ~
between two bushes blanking either
side of our front door. Coming home
one night in the dark, I bumped into
her work of art and was covered in
webbing.
The next morning, gingerly opening
the door, there was Charlotte, the
centerpiece of a glorious new web
shimmering in the sun. It was an act
of forgiveness for my blunder. The
location of her creation, however, was
a~ perilous as hanging a work of
conceptual art in a clothes closet.
·: For days my husband and I
T h.e first ford agency in the Newport
Beach/Costa Mesa area, started by
Theodore Robins, i~ still a landmark
among the stretch or car dealerships on
Harbor Boulevard in Costa Mesa.
On J une I, 1921, Robins opened a repair
shop near Balboa's Fun Zone at 706 E. Bay
Ave., renting the building for SIS a month.
He started out repairing Model·T Fords,
and in 1923, qualified for a franchise to sell
and service Ford automobiles. His first new
cor saJes quota was one new Ford a mon_th.
The first sale totaled $637. J 5.
Because they were expanding into a large
dealership, the business moved from the
Pavilion area to a more spacious site on the
corner of 22nd Street and Cc;ntral (Newport
,. Ooulevard), across from the Crab Cooker.
. r Model-T fords were the most popular
cars in the late 1920s, and it was then that
Robins' dealership really took off. He had
the only Ford d~alership in the area, and
with kind hospitality, became the most
revered.
The two-seater Thunderbird was the most
popular Ford in 1955 when Theodore
Robins Ford moved from Balboa to 3100
W. Coast Highway, the site of a Ferrari/
Range Rover dealership today. They
opened a one-acre used car lot on Harbor
Boulevard, while still selling and repairing
Fords at the PCH location. r 'Carefully ducked under the web when
we went in and out of the door. One
day, alas, her exqu isite home came to
an inglorious end when a Fuller
Brush Man brushed it aside .
The top-seller in 1966 was the Mustang,
and that same year Robins move d the
dealership to the Costa Mesa location, a
10-acre lot at 2060 Harbor Blvd. Robins with a model of a Ford Thunderbird, which came out in 1955.
I never saw Charlotte again, but I
' hope she remembers me as fondly as
I remember her. You rarely meet an
undiscovered genius of any species.

Gays told ·tO

..,_Some of counw·s most
influential homosexuals ....
gather in Newport to-hear
head of country's largest
gay church.
, BY DAVID HEITZ, SrAFF Warru.
NEWPORT CENTER -Be
seen or perish. _
That underlying message repeal·
edly revealed itself Sunday after·
noon to about 75 of the county's
most innuential gays and lesbians.
They gathered at the Four Sea-
sons Hotel to hear the story of
Mel White, head of the largest gay
and lesbian church in the nation
ond former ghost writer for reli·
gious cele.brities.
White, 53, said he spent more
than 30 years of his life "in the
closet." He made a living writing
speeches for some of the .larg~st
critics of the gay community, in·
eluding Billy Graham, Jerry Fal·
well, Pat Robertson and Oliver
North.
" "I believed them. I thought th ey
were right:• White said, recount·
ing the painful electroshock treat·
ments and therapy sessions he un·
derwent while trying lo convert
himself to heterosexuality. "I was
trying to get out of being gay. 1
thought I was evil."
The Orange County Fedetal
Club, a year-old organization com-
prised of some of the most power·
ful gays and lesbians in the county,
hosted White's lecture.
"After 40 years of struggle, at
last I can say to the world, 'I'm
gay, I'm proud, and God loves me
without reservation," White said.
He said the radical right is mak-
ing "millions of dollars a day off
hating gay people."
"I tell ya folks ... in the days
ahead, without spirit, without
being on you r own spiritual jour-
ney ... we will not survive," he
said.
Richard Reinsch, chairman or
the club, said he hopes White mo-
tivated the Orange County. gay
community to concentrate more on
national issues.
"Right now, our community is
involved in the most imponant po-
liticnl struggle we've ever faced,"
he said. "Our rigbt to be treated
wi th equality under the law is ~
under attack as never before. The
radical right is using fear and hn tc
in on attempt to deny lesbians :ind
gay men equal protection in a free
society."
According to Reinsch, as many
as 10 states face ballot initiatives
this year which allack equal rights
for gays and lesbians.
The Human Rights Campaign
Fund, the nation's lnrgest gay and
lesbian political organization and n
major benefactor of the Federal
Oub, is the le:ider in the gay com-
munity in fighting such proposals.
"The fact is, they may be sin-
cere -but they're sincerely
wrong," White snid of the "tel-
evangelists" and o.ther right-wing
leaders who arc pushing anti-gay
legislation. "They are taking away
our rights guaranteed by the First
Amendment, and they are -Ooing it
proudly."
White said it's important for
gays and lesbians to be open about
their sexuality with their neigh·
bors, co-workers and families.
"When we come out, we win the
baule. Wh en we $lay in the closet,
we lose the battle," White said. "If
we all turned blue tomorrow, the
battle would be over."

Alaska and here is the i.ocial
nature of things.
W e have a very
well-developed guild and
support group structure.
Each guild chapter has su pport
activi ties and 'arious fund-raisers.
I just read an interview that was
done shortly after you "ere chosen
to head the Center in "fi\ch you
were asked what you would do
about addressing the AIDS crisis,
nurturing local performers,
olTcring ethnically diverse ~
programming, balancing tt,e
competing intcrcsls or rcgfonal
arls organizations and presenting
adult-oriented pop here. Your
answer 10 oil those was pretty
much, hey, I just got here, ask me
again in six months. Well, it's
been six monUu ..•
(Laughs): I knew that would
come back to haunt me. I think we
are actuatly moving on a lot of
those issues. We're in the midst of
planning another fund-raiser to
support AIDS. A lot depends on
having the right artists al the right
time.
The competing interei.ts I can't
address becau!>e of the physical
struchue. There is not enough
time available in the building to
meet the needs of regional arts
organizatio11s. We could easily
present two full weeks of the
13roadway Series (musicals) if we
had the time, and we don't. The
!>ymphony wants more time. The
problem is lhe structure itself.
Until we see ourselves clear to
point where we can build more
theaters, we will not be able to
solve that problem.
There is a new initiative of
advertising programs and
public-affairs programs th at i.peak
differently 10 the community about
what we have to offer. We 're alo,o
expandi ng our outreach programs
so we can have an opportunity to
do the things we ca n't do in the
hull because time is pretty limited .
Do you th ink the Center's at a
crossroads when it comes to
expanding? ,
(Pointing to a board behind th:it
shows only 15 more open dates in
Segerstrom Hall the rei.t of the
year): It's just not possible to meet
any additional community needs in
the current situation. Because it 's
an issue of do we want to grow
and expand or stay where we arc,
l can only say the time is not right
to expand now, but it may be
!tOOn .
There's another way to look at
that. You C<ln't really argue with
success. The Center's paid
uttendance is among the highei.t in
the country. The dance and
Broadway series are remarkably
we ll received. We're obviously
meeting some needs with what
we're doing. !Jut communities
change and the arts change. That's
the great th ing about the arts.
Even if we aren't able to expand
the facility, that's not to say in 10
ye~rs we'll be offering the same
thing we are now. We want to be
flexible enough to meet lhe needs
of lhe artists and the community
we represent.
So what do you think or this
\\hole Whitewater deaf?
Aw, come on.
(Greg Patterson, the Center''-
pre~ officer, who sat in on much
of the interview, noted thal
Tomlinson didn't have anything to
do with Whitewater.)
You've got to h:l\e an opinion
on it.
(Laughs): I don't have time to
read the newspapers.
I wanted lo ask you about arts
education, which tics in with the
upcoming Imagination Celebration
the Center is so involved with.
When I llllk to other arts leaders,
they continually bring up o rear
that audiences ~on't be there in
the future ror what they present
because ot the lack ot arts
education in the schools. Could
you see any benefit in all the
organizations joining forces,
perhaps as a count)widc umbrella
group, and coming up with a joint
plan to tackle this problem year
round?
I n my view, yes, there would be
an advantage to that. We've
talked about it and there is some
advantage to at least seeing if
programs don't overlap. The
biggest advantage would be just
working together. That's why an
Orange County arts council is
forming and organizing a board of
directors. Coordinated efforts with
schools would increase.
Out when it comes to arts
education in schools, the biggest
thing is we shouldn't be expecte~
10 take the place of the schools.
We're not educators. We were not
trained as art educators. We do
have resources we can offer the
schools as they provide that
valuable arts education. We can
provide artists and a variety of ·
activ11ies like ahe Imagination
Celebration, but that has 10 be
supplemented by
curriculum-based, in-school arts
education. The biggest thing we
can do is g~ ;irts education back
in the schools.
Whal other bcnents would lhcre
be to a cou ntywidc arts council?
I know lhere have been
di~cussions of countywide arts
awareness programs 10 let adult
know what's available, where they
can find il, what's here, why arts
are valuable in a community ...
And why are Drts valu able In a
community?
Fifty million rca ons. At the
w:ry basic level, the arts pass •
values of one generation onto 10
the next only in a way they cnn. Jn
w~i.tern c1viliiation, what bases a
s~icty all comes from the art ..•. o" a basic level, il's nbout wh:11
we arc.
There is an economic ~dvantage,
100. The numbers are enormous.
The economic value of just what
we do he re is enormous.
Businesses make decisions on
where 10 locate using the arts as a
key factor. Walk into any
restaurant around here on 11ights
when we or SCR don't have a
show, and you can shoot a cannon
jn there. Go on nights when we
have a show, and it'!> difficult to
even get a table. There's an
enormous impact. .
When you arrived, or perhaps
even before )OU got here, when you
were looking into the position, I'm
sure you heard the knocks against
the Center being elilist and nol
rcflt't'live or Orange County's
dh·erse population. Are those.
knocks fair?
I think they're simplistic and
made without the benefit of
understanding the whole picture-.
This building was built with
entirely private funds by a group
made up of a large number of
individuals, some very wealthy and
some non.wealthy, so the
community would have the kin~s
of programs it has. Some s;iy that
makes it elitist because it was one
group that did that.
But when you look al the price
of tickets, the number of free
tickets we give away, the number
of performances we have for
children ... One million kids have
been to performances at the
Center. There were 200,000 jusa
Inst year. More than 5 million
people have seen a show aa the
Center. We have Summer at the
Center, which are two-week long
workshops where at-risk high
school saudents come in here and
create a musical-theater piece.
S ure, maybe you can say baUet
is elitist, but that's because
th ere are jusl certain people who
like ballet. But to paint us with
such a broad brush doesn't take
into account the whole scope of
things we do.
In many ways, people would
envy your position. You face
dilTcrcnt challenges daily, you get
to rub elbows with world-ramous
pcrf ormcrs, you gc.l good seats to
every show at lhe Center -and
they're tree! But you also have lo
pul In long hours, you can't wear
jeans to work and, face It, you
have lo put up with slimy media
types like me. Docs it ever get to
be a grind?
A grind. (Long pause). I don't
lhink it ever gets to be a grind. It
changes often enough and there
are always new and exciaing ahings
happening. There ure some days
where I'd raaher be doing things I
like to do than things l have 10 do,
like when l have to sit at my
computer for four hours. But
(overall), it's greal fun. I have one
of the best board of directors I
ever hud n chance to work with.
And it's n grcaa staff to work with.

A DEAD BATTERY
WHODUNNIT
If the engine fails to tum over
with the tum of the ignition key,
the car battery is probably dead.
As easy as it might seem for the
car owner .to make this diagnosis,
there is more to it than merely
pointing to the battery as the
cause of the problem. In fact. the
battery itsett may not be at fault It
may be that the alternator Is not
working proper1y or the voltage
regulator may not be sending
enough electricity to the battery
from the alternator. To check out
these Possibilities, the technician
will likely want to see if 1he
battery passes a "load test" to
check whether or not it is taking a
charge. Instead of jumping to
conclusions, car owners should
rely on technicians to trace the
source of their car problems.
HINT: A dead battery may result
from a condition as simple as a
loose or corroded cable
connection.
WORN
BALL JOINTS
The first step that car owners
should take to correct a front-end
shimmy is to have the front
wheels balanced. If this does not
cure the problem, the auto
technician may want to check for
worn ball joints. These are the
parts that connect the lower
control arm of the front
suspension to the steering knuckle.
If a ball joint displays
up-and-down (axial) free play or
side-to-side (radial) free play, It
probably requires replacement.
However, if the car needs a new
ball joint on one side, it does not
necessarily follow that the ball
Joint on the other side also needs
to be replaced, This is also true of
cars with both upper and lower
ball joints. They need not
necessarily be replaced in pairs.
