By Monday evening, Newpon Beach fire officials had not released the name of the victim, who was being treated at Hoag Hospit:il. Capt. Richard Middlcbrough said the plumber had been opening a vault that led to a storm drainage srstem under the parking structure when a spark shot out, igniting about 2.5 gallons of gasoline which had apparently leaked into the water, possibly from a car. The city's hazardous matcri:ils team was called to the scene to pump the system out. The incident has nothing to do with the explosive level of methane gas .recently found seeping out or city sewage pipe along West Coast Highway, according to Middlcbroup. "Different gas, different pipe," he said. -By LoriAnn B:uhcch LOCALIONLY Tiii Great 1111'811' s..a ..... LOCALS ONLY C~bain may have finally found nirvana- 0 nee upon a time, I was in love with this quirky little Pasadena radio st~ion. Then it got listeners. And commetcials. And stick deejays. I can barely endure a couple of minutes of now-Burbank-based KROQ-FM. I listened Friday. • "I'm all torn up about kurtcobain." The name sounded like one word whenever the dis- traught teen on the phone mentioned it on the air Friday night, just hours after news broke that the Nirvana front· man had taken his life. MTV billed Kurt Cobain as the spokes- man for a generation. Someone else heaped that lofty recognition on John Len- non aCter he was assassinated. It will be heaped on Bob Dylan when he's knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door. Editor's Notebook Nirvana's gut-wrenching lyrics and gritty, overamplified garage music certainly re- vived a rock industry that seemed to have fallen into a rut. Rock seemed voiceless until Nirvana's album "Nevermind" blast- ed onco the scene three years ago. In the time it takes to whiff teen spirit, Seattle was Valhalla, Oannel was high fashion and unwashed h:iir was real cool. • What's ironic is there was nothing new about Nirvana. Guitar driven. Loud be- yond comprehension. Indecipherable angst. Heck, my ears are still ringing from bands like that l endured 15 years . ago. However, after a decade filled with so much misery-filled music it became cliche, along came Cobain, the genuine ar- ticle. 0 This may sound insensitive (me? insensitive?), but when l started h~ing all this "spokesman for a generation" stuff 1f1:1ng around -Cobain's neck, it got me to wondering who's th~ spokesman for my generation. I love Nirvana, but several belt holes have passed since I could identify with the alienation Cobain articulated so well. I love Dylan, but I was just out of diapers when he was huge. I love the Beatles, especially Lennon, but that was my older brothers' music. So who's my spokesman? The Bee-Gees? Will I get all teary eyed when Peter Frampton kicks the bucket? Will 1 join thousands of others chanting "Ploy That Funky Music White Doy" at the vigil fo r whoever sang for Wild Cherry? Led Zeppelin was my god but, thankfully, I grew out-or --1~u.....L.U<!.D<l~1hc...old D.wi.G-Bowie;-but-irwasn'J real cool when and where I grew up to cmb_racc androgyny. I ven tured to Pink Floyd 's "Dark Side of the Moon," but it would take a lot more tripping 10 make Roger Waters my spokc, sman. Around the time they were nailing disco's coffin and my needle had worn a hole in the Led Zep records, along came punk and new wave and rockabilly. I suppose John Doe and Exene Cervenka from X arc my spokespeople. And Lee Ving of Fear. And Jello Biarfa of Dead Kennedys. And Joe_ Strummer of the Clash. And Elvis Costello, with or without the Attractions. Will I call a radio station when they die? Will I huddle with masses in the rain? Will I shed a tear? Doubt it. 0 Cobain's interminable gloominess, caused by an up- bringing in broken and dysfunctional homes, had a pro- found impact on mill ions of impressionable young fans. With a national divorce rate hovering around 50%, th at should be alarming. It's easy to knock KROQ for sacrificing its roots for prof- its or MTV for glamorizing unhealthy behavior. But, based on what I witnessed this past weekend, both deserve praise for continually reiterating suicide is not the answer. But what was the answer for Cobain? I've heard people say, "He had everything going for him. How could 'Someone so talented and successful kill himself and leave his wife and baby behind?" I think the question is the answer. He had everything going for him, he'd achieved everything there was to achieve art.istically, he had a wife and baby girl who loved him ... and he was still a mess inside. His art came from pain. We ate his cancer. His c<incer ate him. In Buddhism, nirvana is the state of blessedness achieved by the extinction of individual existence and by absorption of the soul into the supreme spirit. Maybe kurtcobain found hi s nirvana. MDII Coker's column appears Tuesda1s.. ....... Bleiker expressed conce rn that he'll be able to keep Abrams ... or rather that Abrams will keep the Sailors under these terms. Right now the only obvious singles matches for Abrams will be when league linols come, which acts as a step into the CIF individual playoffs. Abrams' motivation for Monday was to go up against Laguna Geach'~ singles standout, Ell iot West, but West was-busied in doubles.
