A popular Newport Harbor High School graduate, Lauden- back pleaded not guilty April 8 to charges of child abuse for aJleg- edly spanking the boy the day be- fo re his death. Police initially arrested Lauden- back on suspicion of murder afte r autopsy tests indicated the boy bled to death from a ruptured liver and pancreas. Laudenback, 32, was babysiuing the child when he die8. Prosecutors said they did not have enough evidence to fil e homi· cide charges., though, and ad· ditional autopsy tests were or· de red. The resuhs of those tests have not been released, but the Orange County District Attorney's office apparently made a decision Wed nesday to charge Lliude nback with murder, authorities say. The district attorney's office confirmed Thursday that an ar· raignment is scheduled for 9 a.m. today at Harbor Municipal Court in Newport Deach, but declined to discuss the charges. By attaching a "Bambi Bucket" to the Newport Beach Police Department's helicopter, officer pilots swooped over the ocean, scooping up 108 gallons of sea water, and then whisking it to Muddy Canyon, just east of Newport Coast Road, to practice dumping it on targets. Newport Beach Fire Chief Tim Riley said it takes "significant skill" to cripple a blaze by hitting the right spot while flying overhead at that height and speed. Arts, technology programs get big boost from school board School board members Tuesday night approved the creation of plans that will boost funding for arts and technology throughout the school district. "This will be a great shot in the arm for schools," said Newport-Mesa Unified School District board President Ed .. Decker, dean of fine arts for Coastline Community College. "I feel gratified that the board of education is unanimously in support of en hancing the arts as well as technology." High on the list of fine arts priorities will likely be the purchase of musical instruments, Decker said. High school music teachers complain of old and ill-repaired instruments. Elementary school music specialists, who travel from school to school, have to bring instruments with them because schools are not equipped. School district officials are also concerned about keeping schools current with what is becoming an increasingly high-tech society. During the current fiscal year, the school district plans to spend more than $500,000 on technology related items. A master plan for technology will help the district coordinate existing expenditures and enhance the use of technology in th e classroom. The money for both areas will come from the district's S5 million Irvine Co. endowment fund. The fund was established in 1990. In the past, the district used the fund for short-term borrowing to cover depleted emergency reserve funds. Newport-Mesa no longer needs to use endowment funds to comply with state-mandated reserve requirements. And the school board has developed strict guidelines for the expenditures of the fund's interest income -expected to top $300,000. But before any money is spent, district staffers will create a master plan for the fine, visual and performing arts and for '\, technology. "What we don't want to do is use those monies to take the place of any efforts that are already going on," said Newport-Mesa Superintendent Mac Dernd. "Anything we do will be an additi on to what's going on. We .want to bring a plan back to the board as soon a po~sible so we can begin work on getting more re ources into the classrooms.'.' -By Russ Lou ClnSIDI Medley to play P.aciftc Ampltheatre benefit concert A June 18 benefit for the Orange County Chapter of the Americ~n Red Cross featuring Bill Medley and Friends is the first non-fair act booked into Pacific Amphitheatre since it was acquired by th e county f1,1ir board. They also say Marjorie Van Uden recently refu ed to g.ive John a loan he re- quested for his failing truck driv- ing business. o Morch 8:°Financial documents show Marjorie Van Uden removed her son John as trustee of her S3.5 million estate o n Jan. 6, making her younger son Mark trustee. She also removed John from having power o f attorney over her medi· cal care. Records show Van Uden paid her son John's boat dock and maintenance fees until June of 1993 a nd gave him several small loans. Later that day, John tells detec- tives d uri ng a police interview that hi mother never gave him any loans or money. He also says he only drove a black Jaguar and yel- low Porsche to his mother's house, never mentioning a maroon car. o March 9: Newport Beach Dol- lar Rent A Car employee tells po- lice she just returned from driving John Van Udcn back to his resi- dence after he returned a 1993 maroon Buick Regal. Detectives serve the warrant at Van Uden's Narcissus home. A wooden bear statue is among the items taken into ·evidence. Also seized were clothes, a watch and his mother's death certificate. Court records also note that Van Uden maintains he was with his girlfriend at her Costa Mesa home during the probable time his mother was killed.
