Wednesday. April 20. 1994 • Corona del Mar's Hong makes a case for putting the enort in the lorelro.-t ~ Want to read Chris Hong's lipsf. Just sit back and watch him run, and he'll telegraph you a story. B Y RJCHAJU> D UNN, Sl'Oan Wanu C hris Hong isn't the first guy you'd pick on a de- bate team. Interested in an extended dis- cussion O'iCer lunch? Well, when you flip through the Rolodex ~~~-~ and come to his name, you keep ~~II~' flipping. · Getting information out of Hong, a Corona del Mar High senior 400-meter standout, and without a doubt the quietest member of Coach Bill Sumner's track and field team, al- most requires sign language. The man of few words, however, is the run- ner with the qu ickest steps. Hong lets the stopwatches do his talking. ''He's easy to get along "ith, he's very coachable, but he just doesn't talk a lot," Sumner said. "for me to get information out of that kid, it comes down to head move- ments. He's a doer; he doesn't talk about it. He doesn't talk about it before a race. and he doesn't talk about it after a race." Hong can practically say anything he wants, as long as he keeps up his current pace. Lu!>t year, Hong was CdM's team MVP, and this spring, he's on a cou rse to repeat. He runs both the 200 and 400 meters, and runs a leg on CdM's 400 and 1600 relay team!>. Although Hong's within range of brcuking the school record in the 400 ( 48. 7 by Pat McGrat h in 1983), it's unl ikely he'll ever break a spoken·\\Ord record. Added Sumner, who wants his relay run- ners on the starting line before the race: ··tn a meet, you ask Chris, 'Are you ready?' And he just shakes he head, no. 'Well, \\hen do you think you'll be ready?' you asl.. him. And TENNIS he shrugs his shoulders, 1 don't know. Then )OU :l!>k, ·Well, maybe in 15 minutes?' And he nods his heud, yes.
