the morning ritual kibitzing

The club was in session

In 1976, the sale of

HANDLING A
ROUGH-IDLE
SITUATION
If an automobile exhibits a
rough idle and surging at cruising
speeds. a clogged fuel miector
may be the cause. However,
before scheduling time in the
service bay, try filling the tank
with a different brand of premium
gas on three consecutive fill-ups.
In some cases. a different
detergent blend will work to
correct the problem. If not. the
auto technician may suggest a
fuel lnjector cleaning. This is
generally useful only on cars
equipped with mulbport injectors.
With a fuel in1ector positioned at
each cylinder, multiport in1ectors
are located closer to engine heat
that contributes to the formation of
deposits on the injectors A
throttle body m1ector is located far
enough away from the engine that
heat seldom poses a problem in
deposit formation.

WRING OUT THE
SPONGE
If a dnver fmds that the brake
pedal feels spongy upon braking,
1t may be an mdicabon of air in
the hydraulic system. Repeated
pumping of the brake pedal
producing s1gn1f1cantly higher
pedal posrt1ons may serve to
confirm this suspicion. If so, the
problem can be rectified by
having the auto technician "bleed"
the system of air. On rare
occasions, a spongy brake pedal
may result from brake fluid vapor
lock This occurs due to localized
boiling of the brake Ou1d which. in
turn. results from the heat
generated by forceful braking and
moisture in the brake fluid.
Moisture lowers the boiling point
of brake fluid, which readily
attracts water. Therefore. brake
f lu1d should be replaced
penodically to nd the system of
moisture.

"We're going before the council
to put a stop action on every-
thing," said elifC Haven Com·
munity Association President John
Sturgess. "You're not going to be·
lieve the number of people who
are going to show up."
The city wa nts to offer property
owners the option of building
higher bccnuse it eventually plans
to widen Coast Highway and will
need to take business' parking
spots.
If they take the spots; city ad·
ministrators reason, businesses will
have to find parking somewhere
else -possibly behind the proper-
ties.
Business owners don't want to
give up valuable floor space for a
parking place, so the city is giving
them the option of asking for a
permit which \\Ould allow them to
bu ild up instead-of out.
Although that has been an aJtcr-
nau' c for Coast Highway property
o''ners for i.everal years, the law
under consideration tonight would
m:ike it easier to get the permit.
Residents say they're not going

"Essen1ially. we don't want to

King's Road resident Ari Dela-

·ThJt ''ord, 'significantly,' has

Sic' e Sutherland, who repre-
scnl~ 1he Mariners Mile Associa·
IJOn and sei,;eral Coast Highway
property owners, said his group
supporti. the ordinance with the
"significantly reduce" verbiage.
S1ill, the asi.ociation has agreed
10 b:ii.c appraisals of view obstruc-
tions on a photographic analysis.
"It's not our intention 10 dam·
age 1hc residential views or New-
port Heights," Su1hertand said. "I
myself am a resident or Newport
Heights."
Sutherland said Councilwoman
faelyn Hart has alarmed the New-
port Heights neighborhood by tell·
ing them they're going to • IO$e
their views, even though the 40·
foot law already is on the books.
"If people go around banging
on doors saying, 'The Russians are
coming! The Russians arc com-
ing!' eventually it opens their eyes
up." •
Han could not be reached for
comment.
Residents say they're thankful
Han is letting them know what's
going on at City Hall.
"People have not been in·
formed," Sturgess said. "It's fortu-
nate though that Evelyn. as our
representative, let us know."
Planning Director Jim Hcwicker
said some property owners on
Mari(ler's Mile arc ready to
thrown in the towel -at least for
now.
"The issue has gotten so heated
and so emotional that they would
just as soon take care of the park-
ing portion and take care of the
height portion another day,"
Hewicker said.
Sutherland sa id Newport
Heights residents, on the other
hand, won't give up the battle.
"What they would like to see is
a downgrading of building rights
and property rights on Mariners
Mile," Sutherland said. "We're
simply 1rying to restore property
rights that have been taken by the
city."
Several residents fear the pro-
posed ordinance is the city's "ay
of cleverly giving the Balboa Bay
Club a passport to expand. The
new law wouldn't apply to the
club, however, becau e it 's located
on the bay side 'of Coast Highway
-not the inland side.
"This has nothing to do \\it h the
Balboa Bay Club," Sutherland
said.
The club's ~eviscd e.xpansion
plans, which include lower build-
ing heights and le ss 'iew obi.In.le·
lions, goes before the Planni ng
Commission next month. At 1hat
time, residents will get a chance to
sound off about the project.

Long before the Spanish set

to 20 to 30 tribes. "But now the

are so small they're almost
non-existent."
With most local tribes

The concept of n pow wow as o

"It's only been in the last 20, 30
years that they stnrtcd to share
their dqnces and songs," he said.
On Sunday, Native Americans
attending the OCC Pow Wow
shared th ose same songs with

IRRELEVANT WEEK FACTS AND FANTASIES
Mr. Irrelevant XIX .
..,_ Last player of seventh round has a ticket
to Newport Beach; and it just might be a Ram!
SPECIAL TO THE 0AJLY PILOT
I
. rrclevant Weck founder and gencrnl man·
ager Paul Salata has his hopes high today
that Mr. Irrelevant XIX, originally thought
to be the final choice in the seventh round
of the Notional Football League's annual
college draft, will in foct be the choice of
the Rams.
That's the inside information gleaned from cro-
•••
nies of Salata on Sunday during a swirl of activity which saw the
Rams toss caution to the wind early, trading down, and down ... lo
the extent the Salata entourage in New York City believes will even·
tually swell into a mountain of draft choices in today's cvcnth
round.
The theory is that Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones won't be
able to resist the offer of several of these R:ims choices for the Cow-
boys' final pick in the seventh round (220th ovcrnll)-which in-
cludes the honor of becoming Mr. Irrelevant XIX.
"AJt or us agree, it must be the Rams' real motivation for what
began on Sunday. They need us. As you know, the ddending Super
Bowl champion acts the final pick, and we believe the Rams, with
their sagina numbers at the p te, think this wUt help their crtd·
ibilhy," said one Salata team member, who asked that his name be
withheld.
The Rams bepn Sunday's playfulDal on ESPN by tradina away
No. S in the first round for the No. 7 Orst·round pick of lndianapo-
'
and the winner is ••• F
Jis, thus avoiding potential salary hassles with Fresno State quarter-
back Trent Dilfer, and the Rams got a third-round Cohs pick in the
deal, too.
They took the No. 7 pick in the, firs.I round and built that into a
No. 15 pick in the fi rst round with the Son Franci co 49crs, as well
as second-round (56th overall) :ind third-round (IOOth overall) spots.
"Showing this sort of ma stery of the trading system early really
gives us more reason to believe the Rams will continue this trend o n
Monday with the last pick as their go:il," continued the ource Sun·
day afternoon.
Salata, meanwhile, wa busy mainrnining control at the draft hc.td·
quarters Sunday, as well as today.
Irrelevant Weck at the Balboa ll:iy Club m Ne"'port Beach i
scheduled for June 26-July 2, with the Low man Trophy prc-;e nted
June 29.
The week'~ festivities onnu:illy include a fc!>live arrival reception
and news conference, a 'Runnin' Gunnin' golf tournament, a jun"'el
to Di!>ncyland and other as orted endeavors. Two change • however,
arc in tore.
First, last )'Car's farewell party on the first day of the scenario, and
a welcoming party on the final day, has been M:rappcd becau e it
was too complicated for the conservative BOC to understand. Sec·
ondly, the contest to guc Mr. lrrclevant's idenrny before today wa'
scrapped, as well, on the grounds that the award (a free lunch at the
Balboa Bay Club) was a little too steep fot•Salata's budaet.
As a matter of record the Rams did set the Irrelevant Week'
crack committee into a 1pin later 1n the day on Sunday when they
rcfu cd to trade off the 15th pick in the fiBt round, instead ielectin1
Auburn off cnsh:e tackle Wayne Oandy ol Aub¥m.
Further Rum~ trades down toward No. 224 remain possible.

the hi&h cards are in the lone suits,

A.-Here's another hand where
the fact that all your high cards are
in Y.OUr long suits makes your hand
better than it counts. We would bid

A.-Compare these nine points
with those in the first problem. The
hand is much poorer because the
