NEWPORT BEACH -AJ.
though a recent study suggests
that movie popcorn covld be haz-
ardous to your health, it hasn't
proved harmful to J ames Edwards
Sr., who founded the Edwards
Theatres chain in 1930.
"I've eaten popcorn every day
since we've been in business," says
Edwards, 87, who also scives as
spokesman for the Newpo rt
Deach-based company. "My wife is
81 and every time we go to the
movies, we both get it."
But Edwards is concerned about
a study released Monday by the
Center for Science in the Public
Interest. The studY. found that a
large container ot popcorn -
without butter -has about the
same amount of fat as six fa st-food
hombu rgers. With butter the fat
content almost doubles, rising lQ
143 grams. The culprit is coconut
oil, used at most movie theaters to
pop the popcorn.
"It's been our practice all of our
business lives to please the pub-
lic," says Edwards, a Newport Is-
land resident. "With all this pub-
licity on the popcorn, we decided
the best thing to do was to give
the public what it wanted."
On Tuesday, Edwards began
shipping lower-fat canola oil to all
79 Edwards theaters in Southern
California. He will eventually
switch to com oil.
"We have used the coconut oil
for a good many years," Edwards
says. "It's the best oil taste-wise,
odor-wise and feel-wise. We were
taken by surprise that some people
said it's bad for you."
Edwards has tlmide a lifelong
study of popcorn and its prefara·
lio n -an integral part o the
movie-going experience.
"Soda and popcorn at the mov-
ies is just like beer and a hot dog
at a baseball game;Q he says. "A
lot of thought is given to it."
About 40 years ago, his theater
chain rejected rel\eatcd popcorn

tion and shipped to theaters. Ed-

working with a non-profit group to

The development most likely
would be a 120-unit apartment
complex, Redwitz said.
"I've been fighting for it for
seven years," Sansone said.
"There's no way you can get af-
fordable ho using in Newport
Beach unless you can get some-
body to donate the land and get a
non-profit group to run it."
By state standards, "affordable"
is anything that costs a household

COSTA MESA -More than 100
Ornngc Coast College students were
tested for tube rculosis Tuesday.
College officials disclosed l:ist
week that 150 students and staff
members were exposed to· the dis-
ease by a 21-year-old female stu·
dent.
"They all agreed to be tested."
said Kate McDonough, OCC di·
rector or Student Health Seivices.
"Students in the past have been very
cosual about having it done, but now
they're very responsive."
Another 40 students will be te ted
today by county health officials who
wi ll be posted oubide the class-
rooms of students exposed to the
disease. The county sent three pub·
lie health nurses to the campus on
Tuesday to test students in an effort
to prevent the rapid spread of the
disease.
There has been a 71 CC increa e in
the number of Orange County resi-
dents with tuberculosis since 1990,
according to the Orange County
Health Care Agency. Beginni ng this
fall, county health officials will test
all new students in Orange County,
from first through 12th grades.
"Just because somebody has a
positive TB test reaction, it doesn't
mean they have the di ease," Mc-
Donough said. "lt just means they
have come into contact with it."
Students will receive test results
on Thursdoy and Friday, but it will
be up to county health offici:ils to
publicly disclo e how m:iny student
were infected by the disease.
A small injection was administered to OCC students,
who will return on Thutsday for results of the test.

when he was spending leisure1y

This opportunity, lasting less
than three minutes, was arranged
by our mutual friend, Danny
Burack, who owned Biscayne's

on assignment for a magazine
piece.
• Much cozier pictures taken
years later at La Casa Pacifica in
San Clemente, when he was
downright playful -plucking a
cigar Crom my coat's breast
pocket and speculating about its
cost. ''This isn't a Cuban, is it?"
Mr. Nixon asked, smiling. Alas, it
wasn't. I invited him to keep the

I tactrully refrained from noting

The Alley to unveil nude painting
The heck with being politically correct.
The Alley restaurant in Newport Beach will
unveil a 5-foot-long painting of a nude woman
reclining on a settee, painted by renowned nude
portrait artist Vi ncent.
Hans Prager, owner of The Ritz restaurant in
Newport Center, removed similar paintings in
March, citing society's changing "moral limits."
But The Alley restaurant owner Dennis
O'Sullivan says the two paintings of naked women
he plans to unve il at 8:30 tonight will fit in just fine
with the restaurant's turn-of-the-century, San
Francisco waterfront motif.
"They're really very beautifully done paintings,
O'Sullivan said.

Costa Mesa Police closed off Santa Ana Avenue for about
half an hour Tuesday morning after receiving a frantic sui-
cide call from a home In the 2450 block. A 43-year-old man
called police at about 9:30 a.m. saying he had a loaded
shotgun and that he wanted to kill himself. Police bar-
ricaded the area as they tried to convince the man to give
himself up. Half an hour later, the man surrendered without
incident and officials took him to a Santa Ana hospital for
psychiatric evaluation. Above, a Costa Mesa police officer

I have been a lifelong Democrat
and I was never a big fan of
Richard Nixon's, however I do
respect the man for all that he did
and the article written by Matt

excuse for such poor journalism. It
is so immaturely written, he has
no right calling himself a

I really take exception to Matt
Coker's column ... he doesn't
look in his picture like he knew
what the heck went on back then
anyway because he has read some
bad things. He must be a naming
liberal to choose to write this
editorial. I think it is way off base.

lowing his team's 15-10, 15-1 l, 15-1 sweep over vis-
iting Tu~tin. •·1r we don't, it's a co-championship,
and we don't want a co. No co."
Although Tustin (8·5 overall, 7-4 in league)
wasn't at full strength, missing two of its best play-
ers, Cu nis Jackson and Josh Rasmussen, the Sail·
ors (11-3, 10·1) played one-of their most inspi red
matches of the season, holding off the much-
improved Tillers in two close games, then compel·
ing near nawlcssly in the third.
"We played well in the third game, \\e didn't
miss any )Crves," said Glenn, whose squad plays
Saddleback on Friday, then Santa Margarita and
Corona del Mar to wrap up l he league campaign
next week.
"Losing th at match against Irvine (15-12, 6-15, 8·
15, 15·5, 12·15) gave us a real gut check for th e
rest of league, and we came · back strong today.
Losing ·is not good, not this late in the year. We
mb~cd 20 serves and we beat ourselves. We were
up in the fifth game, and we made some key er·
rors."
Ramy Shoukry misses attempted block at net.
Nc'"port Harbor, led by senior outside hi11er
Mitch McCoy's 17 kills and junior outside hiller
Greg Slick's 13, made sure that there wouldn't be a
fifth game again~t Tustin.
Ramy Shoukry, :.i 6-foot· 7 middle blocker,
McCoy, and sellers Eric Vallely and Paul Root led
the S:iilors' early charge, going up 7-l in the open·
ing game before T ustin Coach Ken Koci needed a
timeout.
Tustin, behind the hitting of Donn ie Rafter
(nine ~ills), stoged a comeback and pulled to with·
in 9-5. The Sailors increased their le ad 10 12-5,
mainly behind the blocking of Shoukry an d the hil·
ting of Slick, bu t Tustin refu~ed to go away.
Three unforced errors by Newport , a scoring
block by Tustin's Alan Hoang and an into·the-net
return by the Sailors allowed Tustin to pu ll within
13·10. But back-to-back Tustin error~ gave the Tars
their first win.

Newport's TlnaJero,
Mesa's Comfort put
on a sizzling shoW
~ James Comfort edged Harbor foe on final lap
to lay claim to Swimmer of the Meet laurels.
T he eighth annual Estancia High Frosh-Soph Swimming
Invitational last Saturday had some unexpected drama when
it was decided that "Swimmer of the Meet" honors would
be decided on the last event of the competition.
Prior to the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay, it was
agreed upon by mutual consent of both coaches that instead of
awarding Co-Swimmer of the Meet honors to both James Comfon
of Costa Mesa and Rodolfo Tinajero of Newport Harbor, that the
final event would determine the winner.
"After the breaststroke, we agreed that Dara Burch from
Millikan would be the girls winner, but we couldn't break the tie
between Comfort and Tinajero," said John Carpenter, Estancia
coach and meet director. "Each had won two events, each had
been on one winning relay previously and each had broken one
meet record.

"We originally decided to award Co-Swimmer
of the Meet honors, but the coaches both
agreed that the individual on the winning team
on the last free relay would get the award."
Both swimmers were to be anchors on the
relay. And the first three members of the relay
team made sure that neither Comfort nor
Tinajero would have a clear advantage.
"The two hit the water together," said
Carpenter, "and the crowd was goin,g nuts. They
were even at 25 (yards}, even at 50 and even at
75. With about 12 yards to go, Comfort pulled
ahead by about a quarter body length and held
on. It was incredible." Lightweights Earlier that day, Tinajero had set a meet
record in the 100 butterfly and Comfort had set
one in the IOO free. Tinajero had also won the
200 individual medley, while Comfort was also first in the 100
b:ickstroke.
