It's really passed due. The people in
Costa Mesa have been talking about it
for. more than seven to eight years, when
my kids were little toddlers, And so far
my kids are 13 and 11 jears old right
now. And nothing has been done
about it.
I'm a little bit disappointed with the
city and with some of the leadership that
really did not come forward trying to
help our kids become more involved and
more active.
Sports programs really keep kids
focused, motivated and build their ·

about parks.
We have to have some place (or our

• I am sad to say that city (officials) paid a
· consultant Sl00,000 a few years ago to
tell them what and where tl)ey needed
youth sports facilities. The consultant
said to create a joint7use agreement with ·
the school district for use of their
facility, which the city has done.
But the consultant also went on to say,
to emphasize, that joint-use agreement
would not be enough tfY itself. He ~tatcd
that part of Fairview Park would have to
be developed to satisfy the acute lack of
factlities ii\ the city of Costa Mesa.
So I asked you, why pay an expert
$100,000 for his opioion and then not
follow his advice?

I want to voice my opinion about the
building of soccer fielas at Fairview
Park, )vhich is our designated open
space park for birds. We have already
lost the meadowlarl<s and the owls, and
w~ are trying to restore it to a natural
park as we move all the cement, cover
up the archaeological site and make it a
place where people can go have peace
and go watch sunsets. -

We do need sports parks in Fairview
Park and all over Costa Me~a. For years
we have been playing Little League
baseball at Costa Mesa High School,
keeping the field up, painting all the
bac~stops and doing .all the work and
now we have to use the facilfties at their
discretion.
So yes, the kids in Costa Mesa are
getting a raw deal when it comes to a
place to place sports. It's the only city
around that I've ever dealt with that
does not back sports programs and
having a pince for kids to play.

In response to an opinion article

An op~n leller to Clay Stockton:
I thought your piece in the
April 12 Daily Pilot was insightful,
powerful, poetic and right-on to
the distortions of ouuociety and
our age. ,
Keep thinking, writing,

In reply' to the article by Clay
Slockton, I would like to answer
his charges.
Fiest of all, I believe this is SI ill
the greatest country in the world.
I have to go no fu'rthcr than my
own family to make my point.
Where else in the world couJd a
son·of an Italian immigrant
become very successful by ha rd
work ? At the age of 12 my dad
was told he was 9ld enough to
start ~ringing in some money to
help with household expenses. I lis
dad put my dad to work in a ~m:ill
cafc doing any job required of
him.
His teacher saw the potential in
my dad and dragged him back to
school in spite of his dad's
complaints. My dad·worked one
year to go to college one year. I le
walked to his cla)ses in order 10
save the car fare for a treat in the ·
local bakery. He did no1 gradu:ne
until he was 25 y~ars old.
Clay miike~ a b!g denl out of
how we treat the homeless and
the blacks, c.ic. He \'Cry
conveniently lcnvcs. out the fact~
that many of the unfortunates arc
on drugs, arc alcoholic) and have
little or no education.
In my case, dad said I can only
feed, clothe and educate two
children. Thnt was the sase. Doth
my brother and I linishcd college
and were fed and clothed in our
youth. We arc the ones who
support the different rescue
mission~ and any of the ottler
charities thnt help the poor.
I bet t-hat C+.t~~ good-job--
of talking and wou)d not hesitate
to ask me or any of the successful
people for money for his pct
project. I would :ilso bet that he
would very carefully not put any
of his own money to further his
cause. A liberal is always wanting
to spend other people's money.
