Betwee·n Cinco de Mayo and Mother's Dny, they've come up with only one originnl composition -a l~ttle ditty entitled "Cinco de Madre." But the foursome's star songwriter, J9-year·old postal worker Bob Pcttft or Costa Mesa, is still wooing the muse. He dreams of equaling his first big hit, "TO Each H~ Zone," written when he was carrying the , mail in ~cwport Beach. c> The Ifcach Nuts will be performing May 21 in Westminster, and Pettit admits he needs heJp. (Chuck) Bailey. e~i_tor ·in-chief of Donovan Publishing based in Cannery Village, comes the mystery of the month. .. It's "The Strange Case or the Disappenring Dust Jackets." ln bookstores from Pilotland to the Hills of Beve rly, art lovers are ripping off the attractive cover of Buddy Ebscn's autobiography, "The Other Side of 92." Brentano's in Century City reports that a dozen jackets have vanished since the book hit th~ shelves in February. At Barnes & Noble in Costa Mesa's Triangle Square, two copies or Ebsen's epic were put on display -and promptly denuded. Editor Bailey is a bright young man (he retired from the Air Force as a ·lieutenant colonel), but he has no ready explanation for the disappearing dusters. Heck, for a mere $24.95, cover-lovers could acquire the entire package, complete whh fascinating contents. 0 HEY, IT'S A LIVING -When Dailey called to tell me about the strange things happenins to the Ebsen opus, he was in a chatty mood. Since taking up residence on Lido Isle, he said he's become hooked on the Daily Pilot. And then he asked how I got into the newspaper business, and 1 was stuck for an answer. I should've quoted the late . great columnist Walter 1..ippm'an, who once said he had no marketable skills, so he had no choice but to become a journalist.
