There were a flood of former Ciscos, including Cesar Romero, Gilbert Roland and Duncan Renaldo, who.corrallec.J millions of fans. Bui Hollywood has yet to do extensive homework1 on The Cisco Kie.I. The original Cisco Kid, Stan Dunn, who was billed as Herbert S1anlcy in 1913-15 for Eclair Studios in Tucson, Ariz., lived out his last years in Costa Mesa. lie was not Latino nor did he have a side~in more than 100 Cisco films that were distributed across the U.S. and Europe. In fact, 1he second Cisco, Warner Baxter, was also white. He scored the biggest Cisco triumph, capturing one of the first Oscars in 1929 for his role in the film "In Old Arizona." Dunn, who died.at 87 in March 1979 ~H his Costa Mesa home, once recalled with amusement that Baxter was told by one director that he was the first Cisco. Baxter was astonished one day in 1935 when Dunn showed him st ills from 1913·15. Dunn was no stranger in Costa Mesa or Orange County. In fact, former Costa Mesa Mayor A.L. Pinkley and his wife Lucy, who came to know him, drove him up to Cypress College in.,l~e , could receive pne ~sll:loo first Americana ~ ar~K·r And his granddaughter, Vikki Dunn Richey, was a longtime Gostn Mesa resident before moving to Prescott, Ariz:, abqut four years ~1go, She retains a V:lst collection of Dunn's early Cisco, stills, one six-gun and a wide·brimmed hat he wore in films. Dunn, who grew up playing piano in steamy Coney Island bars with a life-tong friend named Jimmy Durante, was only 20 when Eclair, based in New York, sent him and a big staff to Tucson to do nothing but Cisco movies. He said there was little reason to suggest he was destined to become the silver screen's first Cisco "because others were being considered." B ut the director, Webster Cullison, finally decided the others were too old. "I le wanted a young kid so he picked me," he once said in an interview. The first film, a three-reeler, was "The Caballero's Way," based on an O. Henry short story. It drew immediate success across the U.S. and Europe. . Dunn said the rest of the early Cisco films were one-reelers and he and his wife, the late Bertha Challinger, a one-lime New York newspaper writer, wrote the rest of the scripts. "I had the idea and she'd write ,,, ~ut ~n_.a~he ~ '-ft•n -J . ' "We were the first (movie- makers) in Tucson and it was the first movie series ever filmed. I was also the first film cowboy to use two guns." D unn recalled that he wa sn't much of a cowboy when he started. "I couldn't ri de a' horse in the beginning or shoot a gun either, but we were firing blanks so it really didn't matter .. "I didn't have a mustache either," he added, "but they made one up." He saw his salary rise quickly as the movies became more and more popular. "My pay soon jumped from 35 to 45 dollars a week, and that was big money in tho~e days. "You could buy a steak dinner in Tucson for 25 or 30 cents. We were paid·in pieces of gold and silver since there was no paper money down there at that time." Dunn; a ve teran of 52 years in the motion picture industry, spent most of those years as the chief property master fo r Harry Cohn at Columbia. 11lE NEWPORT BEACH • COSTA MESA The Ne"' pcm Oc11ch/Cm1;i Mm D:iily WIATHIR AND OCIAN CONDITIONS I ·1 p·1 P1lo1 cusrS.\44·llOO) IS p11blishcd MOl\dny I I J I IL thro11gh S:i1urJ.Jy .. l? r:-ic .... port Ocnch and Coi.to Mesa, subM:npuons ore only 11va1I· able by sub1enl11n1 10 'The Times Or:rn11c Coun1y (800) 1S2·914 I.
