Entertainment to book. And surprises to hatch. Parents begin meeting as early as October, sacrificing months of spare time to give their children one last hurrah before sending them into the world. "It's blood, sweat and tears," said Oill Loyko, co-chair of the Costa ~esa High School Grad Night this year. Even more important, Loyko said, "it's • an opportunity for parents t6 provide their seniors with a chance to celebrate their graduation in a sare, sane and sober way. Lieberman, who~ -. r • 2 Monday, May 16, 1994 , rln judging males, · make sure not to split hairs T here was a rumor, instigated by the Dilliard Bald Club or America, that bald-headed men were more sexy. Those were 1he days before sex ual harassment, when a vigorous amount or testosterone was sti ll in favor. 59 and Holding Since then, this claim has proved to be a bald-faced myth. 'Men with glistening domes nre no more passionate than your ordinary office wolf with n cap of curly locks. In judging males, one can't split hairs. There are an endless variety of styles and images. Men with high, scholarly foreheads and receding hairlines are no more sensitive than the hirsute guys wit0h low foreheads and no scalp. Some m:iles cultivate bushy sideburns to compensate for their bare noggins. Others have just enough wisps of hair to fashion a pony-tail as long as a match stick . . Losing one's manly m~ne is a common vexation for all ages. It has spawned a thriving industry of rug makers, or toupee artists, who create remarkably durable hairpieces, withstanding any threat from a 150-milc-an-hour hurricane, to love making. Before high·tech toupees, there was a newspaper account of a woman fa in ting when her lover's wig new off at a critical moment. She sued him for seduction under false pretenses. Since then camouflage has advanced to a fine art. Your sturdiest hair pieces are those woven into the scalp to create a more natural line. Another option is the grow-it-you rself hair plugs which are implanted in your scalp. For the victim with a bald spot on the crown of his head, there's a wonderfully simple solution: An ingenious spray in various shades that blends with your hair. One squirt and your secret is safe. Still, there's no miracle tonic that sprouts real plumage. One day they'll track down the balding gene in the Double Helix and cure naked heads. The most inventive category of male cover-up is the east·to·west or north·to-south strategy. Every strand of hair is artfully draped and re-arranged to disguise as much exp:msc of glaring scalp as possible. It takes the inventiveness and talent for filling space of an interior decorator. If there is a thick fringe of hair on the east slope of the head, it's cultivated in long enough strands to drape across the scalp to the barren and untamed west. Or vice versa. The greatest feat is the south·to·north sweep: Rear strands are combed to the front in a daring defiance of the laws of gravity, and held in place by a tough hair spray, will power, or Craq Glue. We ladies also lose our Crowning Glory and ringlets that bounce like coiled springs. Who knows, one day even Ch~r may have to cope wi th a peck-a-boo scalp as well as having her belly-button remodeled, and tattoos removed. New.port Beach/Costa Mesa Dally Pilot llllJIMN ........ , They arc interested in marketing their ware1. And so therein lies the term "promotion." That's why, yes, I am a promoter. And that therein lies the fun of this b11sinec;o;, n-1 well. This is a cynical market, it's a very difficult market. But it's not an impossible market. The cream sort of rises to the top. You bring a product in, you get rc.5ults. I cam«: here knowing that there was competition going on, but you assume if you are decent at what you do, it doesn't matter. U l had zero competition, as TeamTcnnis has in a lot of other cities, like Kansas City, 1 would do a lot better. Kansas City probably does twice the ti cke t busi ness that we do, but we on the other hand do four times the sponsor business that they do. What do you Sff as your main job with the franchise? I fancy myself as a marketing person rather than a llports promoter, and therefore, what it is that I want. to do is bring a lot of companies to the party and make them happy by marketing their wares through my event. If I was doing this just to get spectators, I would be doing this mu ch differently, but I don't think 1 could triple my spectator base overnight if I had concentrated 100% on it. There are only three ways of income in sporting events ac; I know of: Spectator's paying admissions, sponsors paying 'pon or fees and television if you are able to get rights fees. So with the Newport Beach crowd, does it really matter •hetber you sell out at 2,400 (ans or draw 800 on a pven night? I'll put it a different way. Whether it sells out at 100 cents on the dollar or sells out at 15 cents on the doU ar. you stiU want to be sold out. In the other events that I've done, we would always take down bleachers right before an event started just so effectively we would always look like we were sold out. I want to look successful because I wa,nt my !>ponsors to know that their product is something successful. And so the selling out is importa.nt. How do you assure the fans that they're getting their entertainment dollars worth? I can only say if anybody ever came up to me and said, 'This was garbage, 1 hated it, I can't beli eve I just spent $24,' thC"ll I'd give them their money back. I sure everybody thinks they get their mo ney's worth. That's the one thing that I'm sure of. My problem is not that this is not value. This is incredible entertainment. I honestly and truly feel that .way. My problem is getting people to understano that TeamTennis is an individual sport ~-·'\. =~' • 2 I played by people for a team. Therdore, you act honest com(>ttition. You get nobody ever tanking, you get every point being crucial. It's just really exciting all the time. CH TeamTeaalt su.rv'lve In N~Bucll? The Dukes can and will remain successful. That doesn't mean that they can survive a bigger picture. I love the TeamTennis concept so much. But there is only so much success the Dukes can have in my opinion. Tbert art concerns that tennis ls somewhat oa the decline. Do you see it that way? Right now the problem in tennis is not in terms of the size and the success, but in terms of the amount of prize money. Tournaments arc now trying to . pass it along to the fan, so the $10 ticket is now a $30 ticket, and the fan s are saying, 'Wait a second.' It's not getting any better in terms of the numbers of personalities. There are no more (John) McEnrocs on the horizon, there arc no more (Jimmy) · Connors on the horizon, there are no more {Martina) Navratilovas or Tracy Austins or Chris Everts and on and on. You have a lot of these foreign players that we in America don't totally identify with. I believe in the next 10 or 12 months that I'll be putting a group together to buy up some events. Because I think some of these tournaments are going to come falling out of the trees; a lot of these tournaments don't have sponsors. How soon could some or your plans happen? . I don't know the answer to that, because things may be happening or not happening. And I'm not trying to be evasive, 1 just really don't know. Just like when I flowed from the graphics business to the printing business to the tennis business, I didn't sit here and say on January 23 I am doing this. It just kind of evolved . lf I had a dream I'd probably like to be the commiss ioner of baseball, something iike that. That's kind of a big picture that I would look at. One of my flaws that I see is I'm too hands-on. I have a hard time delegating things to people. I have this dream about not being hands·on and I feel as though I've been told that I can see big pictures. On the other hand, it seems th at all the businesses I've been in the sports .businesses take so much of my time. Uow did you get Into the tennis business? It was through Julie Anthony. a fomier pro wi th the New York Apples, that I got to be friendly with Billie Jean King. My bu iness at the time was a printing company and graphic design business, and through BiJlie Jean, I met her husb .. and, Larry King, who published a map.dnc that followed the women s tennis tour all over the country, and I tarted by doing some advertising sales for him. I ended printing of the magazine. I had became like a tennis groupie, so to speak. 1 would travel, I got friendly with a lot of tennis players and I was just sort of an outsider. I went into business with a man who owned a tournament in New Je~y. We flew down to Atlanta and negotiated with Larry King, silting around his swimming pool, and we said that we wanted to buy the magazine. We actually negotiated a deal to buy the magazine and signed it on a napkin. What bas th~ evolution or the Dukes been llke7 I remember in April of 1990 - at the time we didn't even have a name for the team - and we did a phone press conference. There was a newspaper writer who totally trashed the idea of TeamTennis coming here again. I didn't even know there had been two unsuccessful franchises here before. H~ said this will never make it and he totally trashed me for my motives for coming here and he basically had given me a year. So I've cen ainly succeeded where p_eople like him didn't think I would. We are still standing and, as I said, I think we put on a hell of an . entertainment package. So I think that I have achieved success. And that's because I now have a son, at age SO as opposed to age 21. This kid and my wife have really changed my life and now I'm focused a lot differently. I no longer need to be the richest guy in the grave as they say. I'm no longer so totally focused on success being measured by monetary success. And I suppose having taken my lumps in the last few years like a lot of other people have that's also kind of straightened me out. So all of these things happened at once. Running the Duke would be an ideal job and a career in business if I didn't have to worry so much about mo ney, becau!t.e we can't afford to lose money. And so that's what becomes the problem. I'm slowly finding the level. I've done OK, so now I'm concentrating on my wife having a great career. . l also like writing a lot. There is definitely a book inside of me. The next thing that I do, if it's not the Dukes, is going to be something that will not be as revolving around how uccessful we can be fina ncially, but how successful I can be emotionally and in tenns of my family. I can't believe I am saying this, because I was the last person to ever think this way about children. But it has totally affected me and I am proud to say it. lllllBr.I I 3 1-I IFRDI I cu s T QM D [TA IL c [NT [ R Buy3 ....... I.. ~ .... 111·--....
