Hoag Hospital decides to keep
names ol newborns a secret
BY DAVID HEITZ, STAFF Wt.nu
NEWPORT BEACH -As
far as the folks at Hoag
Hospital are concerned, having
a baby is a very private matter.
So after generations of
announc(ng births in local
newspapers, Hoag recently
decided to protect parents'
privacy and stop letting the
newspapers know about the
newborns.
"We didit mostly out of
safety concerns for the new-
borns," hospital spokeswoman
Maureen Mazzatenta said.
"Some of the nurses had seen
a story on television about
babies being abducted, so they

brought it up to their
supervisor."
· The nurses argued that
printing the names of families
with infants tipped off people
who might be in the market for
stcalir1g a baby, Mazzatenta
said.
They also noted that as
hospitol security has become
tighter, infant abductions from
homes actually have increased.
Mazzaicnta said Hoag hasn't
had any problems with infant
abducuons, however. "They just

BY DAVID Hs1TZ, STAFF Warraa
NEWPORT .BEACH -Fallen
police dog Dingo may be patrol-

these days, but his spirit lives on
at the Newport Beach Police De·
partment.
The department recently pur-
chased Jago, a German Shepherd
trained in police work, with money
donated by residents who
mourned the loss of Dingo.
Aoe<>rdina to police spokesman
Sat. Andy Oonls, Ja&o is a descen-
dant of Dingo, who was believed
to be the county's first police dog.
"Din10'1 arandpa is Jaao's

said.
Dipgo died U\ February from
complicatioN that arose after foot
surgery. He was replaced last
month with Ado, also a German
Shepherd.
Jago, 4, will replace Hondo, a
Newport Beach Police dog who re-
tired three weeks ago.
Oonis said Jago will live with his
handler, officer Kent Eischen.
Ironically, Eischen is roommates
with officer Dave Stetson, who wa
Dinao's partner up until the time
of the dog's death.
The day after Dingo died, re~t·
dents sent the department more
than S 16.000 to replace Dinao and
retire Hondo.
The new canines cost the city
about SlS,000, Oonis said. The
extra money will ao toward a ca·

McDonald's isn't her kind of place
While looking at "'my Corona del Mar Scenic SK shirt in
the mirror this morning, I realized that the scenic wooden
benches at Lookout Point have been replaced by some
sort of plastic atrocity.
I say this is planned obsolescence because it looks so
perfect. Perfect for gang members to write in forger areas
their gang signs and other graffiti. Perfect for destruction
because it can be tipped over and broken.
Another quesuon on CLAS
I am speaking out against the proposal for a McDonald's
anywhere on Balboa Peninsula. It's bad enough just
seeing them on Coast Highway. And the only thing good
there I h~ar is the fries. Other than that, forge t 'em.
Perfect to last a long time because if you sit in it for
one minute, you'll see that it's not comfortable at all.
Perfect because it must be designed by the same person
who put the white benches made out of torturing wire
I was just reading the letters to the editor regarding the
CLAS test. My question is if parents don't want their
children writing regarding their personal religious and
moral beliefs, what do they want them to be writing
about?

Taller buildings, restaurant threaten city's beauty
Jull S. Cook
W e're mad as Hell, and we're
not going to take it any
more! There are two
controversial, possibly
catastrophic issues currently
before the city of Newport Beach which, if
approved, will allow the applicants to alter
forever the skyline and the historic seaside
neighborhoods of this prized coastal
community:
The proposed Mariners Mile building
height variance along Coast Highway and
the proposed McDonald's restaurant at
28th Street on the peninsula.
In both cases, the Planning Commission
and the City Council have seemingly taken
a strong pro-business stand at the sacrifice
of the very citizenry whose rights and
property values they have been sworn to
protect and uphold.
In both cases, t'he residents most
adver:.cly affected by the Mariners Mile
variance and the proposed McDonald's
were not formally apprised of the public
hearings until well after the fact -or if at
all, as seems the case in the Mariners Mile
hearings.
In the McDonald's case, a formal
"Notice of ·May 5 public hearing" was
mailed to some residents. May 5 is the
third such planning hearing; the residents
knew nothing of the first on March 10;
and only by sleuthing around City Hall did
we discover the agenda for the second
April 7 hearing.
Meanwhile, while the seemingly
disenfranchised local residents are madly
and frantically scurrying about to gather
their forces together and develop strategy,
the business hordes arc securely settled in
their chamber seats with smiles on their
faces, reams or papers and studies and
"neighborhood friendly" data at the ready.
And so you ask: Just where were those
notices of public hearings? When
challenged, the city auorney did the
research for which we pay him and
discovered -lo and behold! -the
following: Dy law the city of Newport
Beach is only required to announce public
hearings through a published notice in a
local newspaper.
Fine and dandy, City Hall. Now tell us
this: Where, exactly, does it state for the
benefit of the citizens of Newport Beach
that the city must then so advise the
citizens of any such public hearings
through a front-page notice in that same
local publication, thereby directing said
citizenry to that otherwise unread public
notices back page.
(I don't know about the rest of Newport
Beach, but I take my garbage out wrapped
in that back page ... )
We're mad as Hell, and we 're not going
to take it any more!
T he residents confronted with these
two major, community-altering issues
have h~d li11le time to organize and
mobilize against the strong Mariners Mile
Association and the slick McDonald's
corporate giant, color them "neighborhood
friendly." While these businesses have had
months, even years, to work their
proposals through City Hall, the residents
have been pcnalized'by too little time and
impeded by too little knowledge.
f"ortunately for us, however, we did
discover early in the system just how best
to proceed when presenting our case and
our concerns to our elected and appointed
officials. •
It's quite simple, retllly: We, the people,
must always humble ourselves before our
representatives as we plead for a fair
hearing, because they know what is best
for 'the community. We must be
non-confrontational. They like that. We
must never become emotional or turn
hostile or point accusatory fingers. City
officials really don't like that. We must
never, ever applaud for ourselves.
And, lastly, we must always remember
our place: They arc our elected and
appointed officials, and we are not.
Well, that certainly tells it like it is.
Now, what are we going to do about it?
What are we going to do about the
Mariners Mile variance and the proposed
McDonald's? We're going to figh t City
Hall! That's what we're going to do. And
we're going to win, because we're mad as
Hell, and we're not going to take it any
more!

Peninsula residents say water ruined clothes

city , stating muddy or rusty

Bv DAVID H EITZ, STAH \Varna
BALBOA PENlNSULA -City
officials have been hearing a lot
these days about dirty laundry.
At least two peninsula residents
lost loads of la undry in recent
weeks when muddy or rusty water
gushed out of city pipes and into
their was hing machines.
"They were special ones with
trout on them," resident John
Webb said of the sheets which he
can no longer put on the guest
bed. "My wife had gollen these
for me for Christmas. Now they're
just yellow -real grungy."
Webb and neighbor David Shoe-
make have filed claims against the
city seeking compensation for
damaged clothing and linens.
Webb wants $60 for his sheeb;
Shoemake said it will cost him
about $337 to replace an entire
load of \\<hite clothes.
Shoemake said several mono·
grammed shirts were ruined in the
mishap, as well as a prized Ameri-
ca's Cup sweatshirt.
"I just went through the roof,"
he t.aid. "The profanity was he ard
the next block down."
Shoemake Slid he donated a
majority of the damaged clothing
to Goodwill.
The accidents occurred while
the city was in the process of re-
placing u 6,000-foot-long pipe
which serves as the backbone of
the peninsula's water supply.
"When we're done with this
project, we won't have th is prob-
lem anymore," City Manager
Kevin Murphy said.
City officials ex pect the project
to be completed within the ne.'<I
month. Meanwhile, residents
should U!>C caution ~hen doin~

felt it's very important to protect
the P.rivacy and saf cty of new
families."
The same safety concerns
prompted the recent demise of the
''It's a Boy" and "h 's a Girl"
bumper stickers the hospital had
traditionally distributed to new
parents.
Besides weighing the safety
issue, the hospital decided to
discontinue releasing the names.
after several families complained
about being placed on mailing
lists.
Apparently, several businesses
that market infant products got
names of proud parents out of the
newspapers and then obtained
addresses by using a dat1lba5c or
telephone book. .
"A lot of families just didn't
want to be bombarded with direct
mail solicitations," Ma22atenta
said. "Releasing the birth
information put them on a whole
slew of lists."
Despite its good intentions,
Hoag's new policy has rattled
some parents who look forward to
boasting about their baby.
In a letter to The Daily Pilot,
the Rev. Peter D. Haynes
wondered why the arrival of his
son -Peterson Donald Haynes -
didn't even get a mention.
When told about the hospital's
new policy, he said, "It's sad that
it has come to this."
He said he!. understands the
hospital's concerns but believes
releasing the oifili" information
should be the parents' decision.
"It would be nice if they had a
permission form or something," he
said. "In my case, l want more
inform::ition than you normally
print anyway, like the name,
weight, length and future
educational possibilities."

.Have they been juicing up the ball for the
Major Leagues? That's the question which is ~\ •

around the country.
Nobody's asking the question with the Orioles in
Newport Beach Pony League play. But they arc a little
awed over 12-ye:ir-old Nick Langsdorrs accomplish-
ments.

..._ It's always been Estancia's trademark,
and this year's CIF:bound team's no
different; the Eagles claw and scratch.
BY R OGER CAllLSON, Sro1ns Eoiroa.
E stancia High baseball ... ove r
th.e years the Eagles have al-
ways been a speciaJ spring com-
modity.
No, they don't have the reputation
of year-in and year-out champions;
they're not known for producing a
slew of sledge-hammer hitters; and, with apologies
to Rich Amaral and Jeff Gardner, not usuaJly a
hot spot for pro scouts. ·
So what's the attraction?
Although every team has its own identity,
there's a common thread, and Eagles Coach Paul
Troxel can sum it up in just a few words, whether
it be this year or many of the past.
"These guys," said Troxel , "they play like
they're dirt bags. They just get down and dirty."
This is the kind of team that scores from second
on a ground ball; they type which tries, and suc-
ceeds, a double squeeze, scoring both runners,
with the batter winding up at second.
They're almost always a band of middleweights,
usually underdogs, and more often than not, win-
' ners.
"I just try to get as much coaching as I can get
in, then get the hell out of the way," said Troxel
on MoJlday,_as lte waited word on the-E:igles'
first-round CIF Division Ill foe Mayfair High Fri-
day.
Positives arc at every position, but when you get
inside the Eagles' nest, it's apparent there is a nu-
cleus, comprised or the Arceyut brothers, Jairo
and Pedro, outfielders Clay Frenz and Art Mar-
tinez, and shoristop Juan Mendoza.
E vcryone has stepped up at key points, but
these five comprise the meat of the order.
It's a close-knit group with a common denomi-
nator sometimes not so common: They're in love
with the game, and most everything else takes a
backseat.
Friday's game at 18-3 Mayfair seemed to be only
.,ipe dream a few weeks ago for this 13-12 squad.
They were floundering around with a sub-.200
team batting average and going nowhere in Pacific
Coast League play with a 1-3 record (5-7 overall).
Troxel and his "assistant," the Eagles' longtime
boss, Ken Millard, knew the makings of a playoff
contender was there, despite the start.

able to not only compete, but can
win, if things fall into place.
"We have a lot more weapons
this year , thun last," he said.
"We're more of a solid team this
year and I think we have more tal-
ent."
Costa Mesa finished the regulor-
season campaign 11 -10 overall and
6-4 in the Pacific Coast League,
good for third place. All four
Mesa losses in league came
ag:iinst the top two teams. Tra·
buco Hills and Laguna l lills.
"We beat the teams we needed
to beat to read\ the playoffs," s:iid
Buonarigo. "I think in our last
league game (u 9·0 loss to Tra-
buco), we really looked tired.
"The kids were really disop-
pointed with that game, but with
the week off, we've had time to re·

Niki Montgomery is Me!ia's
'ilarting pitcher, with Sonia Correo
ready In relief. Montgomery, a
sophomore, has shown im-
provement with her location as the
season has progressed, according
to her coach.
Tabby Cleveland, the Mustangs'

this season.
Jennifer Long has come through

''We had lost a one-hitter to Century in a tour-
nament; a two-hitter to Century in league, and we
had been three-hit twice," recalls Troxel.
"We weren't even making hard outs."
Then came the turnaround .
"I can't really put my finger on it,'' admits Trox-
el. "We told them, they kn~w they had to go at
le.i:.l S-3 to make the playoffs. We began putting
the ball in play and the kids just really reached
deep. We have a lot of seniors, and nobody on this
team has been in the playoffs (the Eagles missed
the brass ring by a half-game last year).
"I think they saw this slipping away. Coach and
I tried to get in their he\jds, but you could see it in
their eyes and the way they were practicing after
the (spring) break. '"f his team is the most talented, but they
know what it takes, and the·game is impor-
tant to them. We've got a lot of overachievers."
Those last comments could be attributed to :my
number of Estancia baseball tenms over the years
.. , and as stated earlier, they've always been a spe-
cial commodity.
Here's a brief look at the Eagles, position-by·
position:
•Ca t cher Pedro
Arceyut. He's batting .316 for
the season, but more impor-
tantly, over .500 the past th ree
weeks, including a pair or
three-run homers at Laguna
Beach. He h;is been a main
staple b..ehind the plate for the
past two years. Solid, some-
times explosive in terms or
getting it done.
Troxel • First base -Steve Duker,
a 6-foot-2 sophomore with a
good glove, an even better projection. He's batting
.135.
•Second base -Pete Dcrgman, a senior with a
glove that keeps the opposition off balance. He's
batting .244, and or late is being dh'd for by soph·
omore Joe Herman.
H erman, a 235-poundcr on a 6-foot frame with
power, is balling .216. He has six doubles, 11
walks and six RBI. He's goes by 'Snacks.'
•Third base -G:ilvin Yanagisawa, a junior.
Troxel believes he's the best defensive second
baseman in the league, but he's needed at third. A
defensive stopper. He's batting .183.
•Shortstop -Mendota, a senior with all the
defensive moves. He's for' more valuable than his
.208 batting average, which has produced 11 RDJ.
• Left fielder -Frenz, a senior \vho is best
known for his basketball exploits, only because he
hasn't really surfaced until the second half of the
league season (Estancia's better half)~ He's batting
.323, is effective in any spot in the lineup and has
done a great job, according to Troxel.
•Center fielder -Martinez, a returning :ill-
league stundout. As a senior he hus scored 12
runs, has 26 hits, two doubles, a homer, 10 walks,
12 ROI and 10 stolen bases. He's batting .338. llis
on-base percentage is .516.
• Right field -If Jairo pitching it's usually Jose
Cabrera; if Jose's pitching it's usually Arccyut.
Jairo's batting .355 with a .542 on-base average, in-
cluding 17 runs, 27 hits, five doubles, one triple,
seven walks, 17 ROI and he has gone down on
strikes just three t_imes.
C abrera, a junior, bats at• a .220 clip.
A third option is junior Rocky Shiefelbein
(pronounced shy-full-byne), a 2.40 hitter with defi-
nite promise:
•Pitchers -the heart of E tancia's game, JS
evidenced by a left-h:inde r with a 1.78 ERA and a
right-hander with a 1.9.i ERA.
Jairo Arceyut has worked 63 innings Crom the
right side. He has allowed 47 hits, 16 earned runs,
27 walks, struck out 83 ... and his record is 4-6.
Cabrera, a junior southpaw, has spun 7911.1 in-
nings of work, allowing 53 hits, 22 earned runs, 31
w:ilks and struck out 59 ... and his record is 8-3.
Who'll start at MayfaiI on Friday? Tlmt's-1he
$64 question for Troxel.
"I don't know," admits Troxel. "They both want
the ball. Nothing scares them. It's just a matter of
how they throw this week. Jairo throws harder
with more power; Jose gets a lot more groundouts.
As long as they throw strikes they c:in both get the
job done."
J airo was a pretty well known commodity com-
ing in; Cabrera has surfaced to give the Eagles
"a true 1-2 punch .
"Jose's not overpowering, and he's not very
big," said Troxel. "But he's just barned some peo-
ple. Doth of them have hearts as big as lions."
•The Dench -includes utility spot-starter
Mike Pawinski and a couple of right-handed relief
pitchers, Kent Dailey and Mike Aguirre.
As for a starting lineup on Friday, chances arc
it'll go something like this: Frenz, Martinez, Jairo
and Pedro, Herman, Mendoza, Yanagisawa, Ca-
brera and Dakcr.
A prediction for Friday's game is perhaps easier
to visualize: Look for some dust-enters.
