In desperate need or revival -
G ATHER 'ROUND,
CURMUDGEONS, FOR A
RELIGIOUS REVIVAL -
.Over a period.,of years in.another

trreverent congregation called The

Church of th e
Querulous Churls,
where seldom was
heard an
encouraging word.
Bitch, bi tch,
bitch, that's all
those peculiar
parishioners
wa nted lo do. If it
wasn't one petty
grievance it was
·another, and our
church couldn't
handle the sheer
weight of it all.
Things have
since improved, but not much. Here
in Pilotland, where th e living is easy
(compared to, say, the jungles of
Santa Ana), most of the gripes are
laced with levity. Still, voices are
being heard that it's time to revive
the congregation.
The fi rst complaint, naturally,
comes from me. It's aimed at the
type-setting gremlins who played
pranks in Monday's opus about that
tour of the state prison at Chino.
Our hoosegow host bears the
distinguished name of Willard S.
Voit (that's Volt with an "i"), and
not Volt {wi th an "I"), as it turned
up once. We c:i n only pray that Bill
got a charge out of the added
voltage.
Also, there's no "o" in the
honor:ible family name of a

although it may be argued that
"Tarriutzero" has a nice lyrical ring.
Well, enough about your beloved
pastor. There are maoy other
curmudgeonly congregants waiting
to air a beef or three, so let them
be heard.
Our fi rst complai nant is R. S.
Radtke of Baysi~e Village, who
'-fan ts:
"Of all the despicable low-life
crimes infesting our town, this one
takes the cake. Someone is stealing
the floral wreaths crowning our
topiaries! At the intersection of
Marguerite and Coast Highway in
Corona del Mar, where our
chamber of commerce installed
dolphin-shaped bushes, we placed
ga rlands on their heads to further
beautify the area. And now every
morning a lovely crown disappears.
Can you believe such vandalism?"
(This, forsooth, is shocking news.
We can only pray that the culprit
will be caught, and be sentenced to
a public flogging at the intersection.
Naturally, this whipping should be
done with wet median strips.)
Our next gripe comes from Costa
Mesa, in a bl istering note signed
"A Former Sergeant Who Was
There." It reads:"As a veteran of
the lOlst Airborne Division (the
Screaming Eagles), I resent the
preferential treatment being offered
so-called 'global digni taries'
planning to converge on Normandy
for the 50th annive rsary of the
D-Day invasion."
(I'm with you, ol' buddy. Let 'em
eat Spam.)
This next note has been festering
in our files for several weeks. 11'!1
from one Marilyn Jacobson of
Promd'ntory Point , who wanti. to
share an uncharitable thought on
proposed tollbooths. Her ter!le
grievance:
"It will be a snowy day in
Newport Beach before 1 pay 50
cents to drive on a public ro:id."
(My priestly advice, Sister
Marilyn, is that you prepare to pay
fQc 50 cents, and pray that there
won't be snow. If it snows, prepare
to pay extra for tire chains.)
A not he r churlis h communic:.11ion
long smoldering in our mailbag
comes from La rry Hondel of
Oalboa Peni nsula, who bitches:
"Does anyone remember when
'community service' wasn't p:irt of a
prison sentence?"
(I'm well aware, Brother Larry,
of the sentences meted out to some
of our town's various knaves, rogues
and scoundrels. And, judging from
that, I'd say tha t they've actively
'serviced' our community, if you
grasp my meaning.)
Finally, this missive from Bnrbara
Velt man of Harbor View:
"In one of your recent spoofs,
you said you became a journalist
because you had no marketable
skills. Can't th e same be said for all
the people who claim to be
'artists?"'
(Will Rogers said it best,
Darb:ira, to wit: '·If a man ain't
nothin' el!.c, then he is an artbt It
is the only thing he can cl:iim to be
that nobody can prove he ain't.")

Right now I'm trying to keep them

The worried mother believes
Jose, who arrived home about an
hour after the shooting, and her
oldest· son Enrique, 19, might be
involved with the wrong crowd,
possibly gang members. Both are
on probation, she said.
Recently separated and surviv-

her family. '
"I want to go back to Mexico

g:1ngs here. For me as a woman,
it's too hard to control my sons. l
don't want them to lose their lives.
Out I don't know what to do. I'm
terrified."
Neighbors said the incident was
the first crime they could recall in
the neighborhood of single-family
homes, which is tucked in the
shadow of the San Diego and
Costa Mesa freeways, in the north·
cast corner of the city.
"This neighborhood is very
safe," said next-door neighbor
Cruz Ybarra, who was not home
al the lime of 1he a11ack. "We've
lived here 27 years and this is the_
fir~t time lhis has ever happened.
Uu1 no pl:icc is safe, I guess."

that he most recently lived in Lake

The couple's marriage, which
apparently was Liebman Taylor's
third, ended violently two years
ago, according to court documents.
Liebman Taylor filed a restraining

Ferguson, who expressed admi·

coaching ability, said' the 1992-93
season's 11·1 l record was more in·

eliminated by a Santa Dar· "

to host Santa Barbara Dons, 15-13, 15·3,
15-10, in a CIF Southern Section Division
I second-round match Tuesday.
Coach Dan Glenn's Sailors, who felJ to
Santa Barbaro in the 1992 semifinals, and
last yea r in the second round to Dos
Pueblos, came out strong in the opening
game, claiming a lead of 13· l 1. But un·
forced errors, the Sea View League co-
champions' nemesis all night, helped the
hosts regain the momentum.
Santa Barbara maintained that momen·
tum in the second game, trouncing the
Tars with a strong middle attack, near·
nawless defense, and the ability to sideout
consistently.
"l was pleased with the intensity, but we
couldn't come up with the big plays to
close out the first game, and they ham·
mered us in the second game," said
Glenn, whose team finishes 14·5. "Our
kids stepped it up, just like the Corona
(regular-season finale) and the Fountain
Valley (a four-game first-round triumph)
matches. I guess it just wasn't meant to
be."
Newport senior Mitch McCoy, who will
follow the "If you can't beat them, join
them," credo as a UC Santa Barbara Gau·
cho next year, led the locals with 15 kills.
Senior Eric Vallely, ~ho has a fu.iure at
UCLA to look forward to, and D1"1 ion I
basketball recruit Ramy Shou~ry (Uni\cr·
sity of Texas-Arlington) had six kills
apiece, as did junior Greg Slick.
