reject planned
youth hostel
BY DAVID HEITZ, STAfF Warru.
CANNERY VILLAGE - A
youth hostel is a great idea, but
the people of Newport Beach just
don't get it.
That's what Planning Commis-
sioner Tod Ridgeway told a group
of Australian investors moments
before the Commission voted 5-2
to deny allowing a 50-bed you th
hostel to open in Cannery Village.
Coounissioners Tom Edwards
and Gary Pomeroy voted against
the motion, saying they support
the hostel as long ns city staff
works with the applicants to find
more parki ng.
Investors Andrew Grace and
Philip Boston said they will appeal
the Commission's decision to the
City Council. A hearing will be
held sometime next month.
·Commissioners and ·residents
adjacent to the proposed 4,300-
squarc-foot site at 430 32nd St.
said it is extremely small and very
short on parking. Only three park-
ing spaces arc available and city
staff believes at least 12 arc need·

munity leader Roy AJ~arado and ,
the Newport-Mesa YMCA.
Sharon LaGrave, a nurse at the
Hoag Hospital. Cancer Center,
pledged her support after learning
about the program through Al-
varado. "Roy said, 'Now remem-
ber, these aren't Boy Scouts. The
one you sponsor may end up going
to jail,' " she said.
ThC 52-year-old Newport Beach
woman wasn't deterred and gladly
handed over a check for $100.
"This is a program where someone
outside the community can get in-
volved and make a difference for a
child,".she said.
Sponsors arc asked to front the
counseling costs -a minimum
$100 monthly -to wea n an at-
risk youth away Crom the lures of
gang life.
In exchange, the sponsor gets
the youth's name and phone num-
ber.
But Alvarado emphasizes that
the level of involvement is left up
to the sponsor. He snjd he re:
ccived some negative feedbnck
from people who mistakenly be-
lieved that by adopting th ese gnng
members, they must also become
, the youths' caretakers.
"You don't have to take them
home,'' Alvarado said, laughing.
"You can if you '~ant to. But you
don't have to."
Alva rado said his inspiration for
the program came from a com·
mercial•about adopting needy chil·
dren in other countries.
"This is a way of addressing the
cause instead of just dealing with
the symptoms," he said. "We're
taking a clinical approach to .some
of the dynamics that make these
kids do wha t they do, before it
gets ... to the point where they're
shooting each other."

COST A MESA -Costa
Mesa has agreed to join
neighbor Newport Beach
in the battle to convert the
El Toro Marine Corps Air
Stlltioo to a commercial
airport.
The City Council voted
unanimously this week to
join the Orange County
Regional Airport Au-
thority; a joint powers
agency designed to push
for an airport at El Toro.
Newport Beach Mayor
Clarence Turner said he
has been lobbying Costa
Mesa for several weeks
and is pleased with the
city's decision to join the
group.
"I'm delighted they're
involved, because they are
a major player in this
whole arena," Turner said.
"And their city, of course,
is greatly impacted by what
happens at John Wayne
Airport."
The county created its
own agency earlier this
year to map out the future
of the 4,700-acre Marine
base, which Is scheduled to '
close by 1999 because of
defense cuts.
Under the · plan, each
county supervisor gets a
vote, Irvine gets four votes
and Lake Forest gets one
in determining what to do
with the base.
Turner said one of the
authority's first tasks will
be to send a letter to the
U.S. Department of De-
fense, blasting the county's
reuse panel, calling it sub-
jective and unacceptable.
Representatives from
both Irvine and Lake For-
est have said they're not
sure if an airport is the
best use for El Toro, but
they have said they will
consider it. Along with of-
ficials from other South
County cities, they have
been looking at other op-
tions for the base as well,
such as a housing develop-
ment.
Ultimately, the Depart-
ment of Defense will have
to approve a reuse plan for
El Toro.

CORONA DEL MAR -The
Corona del Mar badminton forces
are a step away from the CIF Di-

lowing Thursday's 12-7 quartcrCi·

The Sea Kings surprised the
fourth-seeded Vikings with solid
play from the girls doubles team
of Trina Howard and Kerri Smith,
along with a sweep from the No. 1
doubles tandem of Tim Wertin
and Jaso n Eggleston.
"The points that really surprised
me came from Wertin and Egg-
leston against their No. 1 team,
which reached the quarterfinals in
the individual tournament," said
Sea Kings Coach Pat Wilson.
Jerrone Poyyak came through,
as expected, in easy fashion in
boys singles, helping Corona roll
into a semifinal match Monday
against favored and No. 1 seeded
Mark Keppel.
