Debate s·urrounds Auto .Club's expansion plans

about proposal that would
more than double club's
Costa Mesa facility.
BY Lou.\NN BASHIDA, STAI• Warna
COSTA MESA -For every
resident who attended Monday
night's Planning Commission
meeting to protest the Automobile
Club's massive expansion plan, an-
other pledged their full support -
even if the project docs meah
more traffic.
• "I'm known as being for slow
growth," said Costa Mesa resident
Janice Davidson. "But in this case,
the benefits outweigh any short-
comings."
As the city's fifth largest em-
ployer, the club employs 1,135
people and generates an estimated
$2.2 million worth of business ac-
tivity in Costa Mesa each year,
providing the city with $150,000 in
property taxes. The expansion
would generate 1,000 additional
jobs.
aub o!ficials have hinted, how-
ever, that if their requests aren't
met, they're willing to abandon
Costa Mesa -a suggestion which
has offended more than a few resi-
dents.
"I think the city feels we have a
gun to our head," said Gene
Hutchins, a member of the 1990
General Plan steering committee.
"I don't agree with their high-
pressure tactics," added Charles
Robenson, president of the Mesa
Verde Homeowners Association.
"They do not have a right to hold
this city hostage."
• Robertson spoke as a represen-
tative for thoso. who believe the
expansion will undermine the city's
future.
As proposed, the club's office
c-0mplcx between Sunflower and
South Coast Drive would grow
from 467,000-square-feet to almost
1 million square feet. One
250,000-square-foot four-story
building would be built within the
next fi ve years. A second facility of

water supplier, the Metropolitan
Water District, is increasing its
rates by 7%.
The remainder or the pro-

for the rising costs or chemicals
used to treat the water and elec-

City administrators eventually
plan to put a cap on water rate
increases by buying water from
the Orange County Water Dis-

Although the city is a member
of the district and is entitled to
tap into the water, the aquifer is

It's all bench ••• no press.· at Estancia
~ Eagles trying to bounce back
from major losses in weight
equipment after recent robbery.
BY R.lCHARD DUNN• Srons \YJJTE1.
COSTA MESA -Thieves
broke into an Estancia High
weight box early last Thursday
morning and ripped off two bench
presses, two weight bars, a curl
bench and a weigh t 'tree, after ru-
ining two campus fences with "cl
bolt cutter to reach the outside weight box,
Eagles football coach John Liebengood said
Monday.
"It's an inside job, because somebody had to
know what w;is there and where it was,"
Liebengood said. "Someone went through the
back gate of the schoof by the auto shop_ area
and cut the chain off the fence to get their
truck in. It's a sliding gate, so ·someone knew
about it, they knew exactly what we had, and
they knew exactly what they wanted. They only
took two bars, and we had seven in the bin."
The Estancia weight bo~ is behind the tennis
courts and outside of the weight room, but not
exposed 10 the public. Burglars cut into a
fence, wallred through the tennis courts before
reaching the weight box, then used bolt cutters
to te ar off 1he hinges.
"Our weight room's not that big, so we have
to do a lot of stuff outside," Liebengood said.
"We built that weight box to siore weights; it's
only been there about two or 1hrec months.
They couldn't get into the weight room unless
they blew off the doors."

ball's here, but there's little 10
brag about at Estancia High after
the Eagles suffered through a 1·9
campaign last fall. So they won't
brag.
"We're kind of starting from
scratch," said Eagles Coach John Liebengood,
who has 75 to 80 players going through spring
drills.
"I can't tell you that I've got these great
running bucks and great linebackers -that's
what I did last year and it backfired. You do
your talking on the field, and we didn't do
much talking Inst year on the field. So we've

tween 500 and 1000 pounds, according to
Liebengood. "It was pitch dark when they
came in, so they knew where it was," he said.
Licbengood said he Jeri the weight room
about 8 p.m. last Wednesday night. Another
coach was there working out until 11 p.m.,
leading school officials to believe that the rob·
bery occurred after midnight. There's no secu-
rity on campus.
"I've talked to my players, and said we'll
offer a reward if we find out who did it, but
nobody's come up,'' Liebengood said. ''It's the
kids who suffer for it. Parents raise money and
somebody comes around in a minute and it's

Perry moves up from the freshmen level,

• No. 1-seeded Keppel proves its badminton credentials.
ALHAMBRA -Corona del Mar High"s badminton season came to
an end on Monday, not too unexpectedly, as No. 1 seeded and unbeaten
Mark Keppel rolled to a 17-2 victory in the CJF semifinals.
For Corona del Mar it was a case of Jerrome Poyyak getting his due
with a pair of singles victories, but the rest of the match belonged to the
Aztecs, who have swept every opponent off the floor since the outset.
"Our kids played their hearts out," said CdM Coach Pat Wilson, in
his eighth year with CdM badminton and with easily the best-ever Co-
rona del Mar squad in that span.
"We're good," continued Wilson, "but they're just better."
Poyyak, a junior, swept to singles viclories by counts of 7-15, 15·7. 15-
2; and 15-8, 18-13, but for the rest the hill was just too steep.
"Poyyak finished third in CIF si ngles, so no, t wasn't surprised nt all
that he did well," said Wilson.
Corona del Mar closes out with a 16·2 record and the Sea View
League co-ch,mpionship, shared with Century.
Majo~ contrib!-ltions to the championship se~son were m~de by Jeff
Roche in boys singles; Allysun Turner and Whitney Hoover in girls sin-
gles; the girls doubles teams of Trina Howard and Kerri Smith, and
Kristi MacFarland and Jenny Nolan; the boys doubles teams of Tim
Wertin and Jason Eggleston, and Steve Schuman and Ramman Saggar;
and the mixed doubles combinations of Poyyak and Smith; Jason Egg-
leston and Howard; and Smith and Turner.
