Dozens of passengers
arriving at John Wayne Airport on
Thursday -the 87th anniversary of
the cowboy film legend's birth -filed
out of their plane and into the
terminal wearing plastic John Wayne
face masks.
It was part of the promotional
hoopla staged by Southwest Airlines to
publicize the first day of night service
to Northern California.
1978 that led him to suggest naming
the airport after the cowboy star.
"John Wayne fl ew back to Orange
County after the announcement that
he had cancer and everybody here 'at
the airport was taking pictures," Riley
said. "I saw a photograph of him
~etting out of the plane with the wind
m his face, and I thought we should
name th is airport after him.
"I talked to him about this and he
was very pleased."
After Wayne's death at age 72 on
July 11, 1979, some residents protested
the naming of the airport after Wayne,
saying the Duke had opposed the
airport and the noise of its airliners as
they passed over Newport.

Newport library
helping to neht
adult illiteracy
I n California, 3.1 million adults are
functionally illiterate. Jn a document
issued last month, the U.S.
Departments of Education and Labor
notes that "many Americans are not
equipped with the academic and
occupational skills that an increasingly
complex job market requires. Often they
do not find stable,
career-track jobs for five
to 10 years after leaving
high school. The cost to
them, to businesses and to
the American economy is
staggeri ng."
Beyond personal
limitations, United Way
estimates the cost of
illiteracy to business and
the taxpayer at $20 billion
Check each year. I O t The Newport Beach __ t_u __ Public Library's AduJt
Literacy Program is a part
of the Cali fornia Literacy Campaign
addressing this problem. Since its
inception in 1986, it has helped close to
500 non-reading adults and English as a
second language students master basic
literacy skills. While many of us take these
skills for granted, adults who can't read
encount er challenges every day, including
balancing a checkbook, reading a road
sign, voting, taking medication or
comparison shopping.
Through free one-on-one tutoring
provided by volunteers, computer-assisted
instruction and support servi ces to tutors
and literacy students, the local literacy
program works to increase productivity,
prepare employees for job advancement
and e nhance personal morale of those
enrolled in the program.
Thanks to a $10,000 grant from the
Daily Pilot, the program will expand to
include a computer lab when the new
central library opens July 10. •
The first floor literacy office in the new
facility will provide space for on-site
tutoring, while study rooms will serve as
areas for independent work.
Making use of four computers running
such programs as "Reading for Meaning,"
"Interactive Math," "Grammar Gremlins.''
"Spell Attaok Plus," "Word Attack Plus,"
"Sounds American'' and "Job Interviews
and Applica tions," literacy students will
have the opportunity to improve reading
comprehension and work force lite racy,
build vocabulary and enhance
pronunciation skills.
ln addition to these areas of basic
competence, students will become more
familiar with the computer as a tool for
learning and production, further
enhancing self esteem and expanding
employment opportunities.
It is not always easy to identify an adult
with reading and writing difficulties.
Possible clues include not taking written
phone messages, reluctance to accept job
advancement opportunities, taking written
work home to complete, consistently
forgetting glasses when expected to read,
heavy dependence on co-workers, lack of
curiosity or motivation and difficulty in
following wriuen instructions.

Dedra used to avoid
classes in which she had to
speak, but one semester at
OCC she was persuaded by a
friend to take a public
speaking course and, since
there were only a few classes
left open, decided to go
ahead with it.
"At first I said, 'No way;
and then the first day of
class l saw the syllabus with
the number of speeches
required and wanted to drop
it immediately, but my friend
convinced me to stay. so 1
did," Dedra said. "My life
has changed as a result of
staying in OCC's public
speaking class.
As she continued on wi th
the course, she started to
enjoy it more and was
persuaded by her teacher to
deliver a speech in front of
speech team members .
According to Dedra, she
walked into a room full of
about 40 people and, after a
brief introduction from her
teacher, was left alone to
deliver the speech.
"At first I didn't want to
do it and was really scared,''
she said. "( couldn't believe
my teacher loft me alone,
but I got through it just fine.
The students were really
encouraging and gave me
helpful hints at the end."
Dedra delivered the same
speech at the "Cool arr·
speech tournament for
novices and received second
place, wh ich was a main
motivational factor in her
pursuing other speaking
opportunities. Her next step
was to join OCC's speech
team the following year and
from there Dedra says,
"everything snowballed into
a big thing."

SUCCUSFUL SPEECHES
Dedra's award-winning
speech category is
communication analysis and
informative speaking, which
consists of a 10-minute
prepared speech that is both
persuasive and informative,
requiring a great deal of
analysis and preparation. For
example, her topic at the
National Community Colleg\!
Speech Tournament, held in
Cocoa Beach, Fla., deal1
with the Breast Cancer
Coalition and the effect of
rhetorical strategies (called
vilification) used to inspire
assistance for the cause.
In addition, in rhe spring
of-1993 Dedra won speaker
awards for the state
tournaments, winning go1d,
si lve r and bronze medals.
She also won two br<>nze
medals for OCC's team,
which fini shed second al the
national tournament in
Texas.
This senson she won a
gold medal in informa1ive

:ind a bronze in
communication •tnal~is. In
the nationals, i.he won a gold
in communication analysis
am.I a bronze in infor,JTiative.
Dedra was named the
nation's top community ·
college speaker for 1994 in
communic:i1io11 nnalysis.
CAMPUS VENT'f RES
Getting involved with the
speech team in~pired Dedra
to pursue other activities on
campus. She's served on the
student finan ce and bucJger
committees, and became
business manager for OCC'i.
Associated Students, in
which she overi.eei. the
budger commiuee and
dispe~al of college funds.
She also served al> s.ecret:iry
o( the speech team, later
acCing as prci.idcnt. Dedra
ClnSIDI
presently works in the
campus' Job Plnceme nt
Center.
Dedra owes her
cooperation in campus
activities to her involvement
with 1hc speech 1cam.
"Defore, 1 would just go to
school, go to work, and go
home. Since l've joined 1hc
speech team, I've gotten
much more involved on
campus. I've met lots of
wonderful people, and met
my boyfriend, who was a
member of the team. I've
also become more
confident."
ADVICI FOR THI SHY
Dedra admits she still gets
a little nervous before her
speeches, but the more she
practices, the easier it is for
her when she ge ts in front of
an audience. Her advice:
"Challenge your fears
because by challenging them,
you are able to overcome
them. It's not as scary as you
think it is, I mean, 1 never
though1 I was capable of
doing this. Everyone is
capable of succeeding.
1hough, they just need to
try."
FUTURE PROSPECTS
Dedra will transfer to
C~apm:in University next fall
and will major in
Communications. Dedra has
earned grams from ace and
Chapman, and says that \..
between the grants and
loans, her education is paid

RESERVE ...... ~,
last October, but the Laguna
firestorm charred the reserve just
one day before the planned media
kick-off.
"I think visitors to the Southern
Reserve, including casual hikers as
well as professional biologists and
habitat specialists, will be amazed
at the rebirth under way on these
lands," Bren said.
Just two days after the blaze,
sprouts of green began to poke
through the darkened landscape,
Bren said. Spider webs connected
the skeletons of trees.
Although much of the
blackened cacti still resemble
molten tires, other species or
plants are thriving, coloring the
hills with coral, yellow and purple
wildflowers.
The reserve, nestled in the San
Joaquin Hills between Corona del
Mar and Laguna Beach, is The
Irvine Co.'s contribution to a piece
or the Orange Coast where the
developer al ready has planted
thousands of homes.
Although a portion of the
Southern Reserve helps' meet open
space requi rements associated with
The Irvine Co. 's Newpott Coast
project, the majority of land has
been opened to the public without
any prodding by the county or
other government agencies.
Monica Florian, senior vice
president for The Irvine Co., said
it is true that the developer
eventually must deIDcate the land
to the public anyway -but not
until additional development
occurs in the arcat which she
estimates won't be until 10 to 20
years from now.
"Although the lands already are
committed, (the reserve) allows us
to very actively take care of these
lands," Florian said.
So far, The Irvine Co. has sunk
$400,000 into its three wilderness
reserves. Besides the Southern
Reserve, the developer has
reserves in the hills of Tustin and
Orange, as well as the Weir and
Gypsum Canyon areas of North
County.
For the past two yea rs, The
Irvine-Co. has teamed up wi th The
Nature Conservancy to manage its
17,000 acres of reserves.
QCCicials from both sides say it's
the first ti me a private
mega-developer ever has worked
alongside a non-profit
envi ronmental group fo r the sake
of nurturing Mother Earth.
"There was some' skepticism, we
acknowledge -even some
cynicism," said Irvine Co.
spokesman Larry Thomas.

of opinion between developers and
environmental groups, the

Conservancy officials.
"From a biological standpoint,
the toll road probably isn't the
best thing in the world," said
Conservancy member Mark

work with The Irvine Co., wh at we
really tried to look at was the
long-term benefits of this

Although the two-year con tract

the fire.
"We'll be conducting restoration
