PASS THE POPCORN ... A
popular Daily Pilot Weekend
section feature is returning -
with a twist.
For several years, the
award-winning weekly guide to
what's going on locally included
reader-written movie reviews.
In its new incarnation, "You Be
the Critic" will match the ages, ·
professions and/or interests of
potential writers with the
subject matter of certain films.
for instance, a lawyer or
judge would review a "The
Pelican Brief'-like nick, a
fireman would review a
"Backdroft"·esque film or a
"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle"
fanatic would re view a new
sequel from the Heroes in a
Half Shell.
Participants earn the thrill of
seeing their prose in print, the
envy of family, friends and
co-workers, the satisfaction of
crafling a movie review from
the paying public's point of
view for a change ... In other
words, we can't pay you. Our
bwdget is limited.
However, if you arc chosen
-to review a movie, paying for
the ticket out of your own
pocket, and we run your
column, you'll get a FREE
movie pass.
Jn order to make this
interactive column work, the
Daily Pjlot is creating a stable
of amateur critics. Please send
us a card or letter with your
name, age, address, phone
number, profession (if any) and
hobbieS/interests/distinctions. If
you have some upcoming
movies in mind you'd like to
review, let us know that, too.

Suffice it to say, Native
Americans' efforts during World

"We're sinking,'' he said. "If we
truced Californi ans 100% of their

needs of the people coming into
California."
Tillotson, who alo ng with Silva
is trying to tap into the conserva-

the 2nd District, said she sees
Silva as a "serious opponent."
"We both come from the same
political party and philosophy but
I think I nm very much different
from Jim. He comes from aca-

Born in Fullerton and raised in
Garden Grove, Silva has lived in

He and his wife, Connie, have
been married 24 years and they
have two children, Chad , 18, and
Donna, 16.
He's been a teacher for 27 years
the 1992-93 senior class.
"We've gotten down to a pretty
good rate but we've still son of
plateaued," Woolley said.
The dropout rate fo r the 1992·
93 school year was 0.7% lower
than the year before, a reduction
that is statistically insignificant , ac-
cording to Newport-Mesa Superin-
tendent Mac Bernd.
Tiie average dropout rate in Or·
ange County is 10.8"~ for the las t
school year, compared to a 15.3%
statewide average. The rate hit
20.4% in Los Angeles County.
"We're below the Orange Coun-

state average and I think that's an
excellent indicator that we're
doing a good job," Bernd said.
"It's cause for celebr:.1tion."
