BY Russ LoAll, STAfF wama
NEWPORT BEACH -After
an unusual parliamentary squab-
ble, City Council members agreed
Monday night to ask voters to ap-
prove expansion of the library
board from five to seven members.
Newport Councilman John
Hedges o~ected to the $7,000 cost
of putting the measure on the bal-
lot. But most council members
said expansion of the library board
is a good idea.
"The people in this city really
want to get involved in city gov-
ernment," said Councilwoman
Jean Wau.
With support from Councilman
Phil Sansone only, Hedges offered
a substitute motion: Expand the li-
brary board to 19 mef!lbers.
"Just because there are lots of
people who want to serve on the
library board is not sufficient justi-
fication to spend $7,000 on a bal-
lot measure," Hedges said. "That's
why 1 offered up the substitute
motion.''
Unimpressed with Hedges' plan,
Mayor Clarence Turner made a
"substitute; substitute'' motion
identical to the ori1inal motion,
which calls for an amendment to
the city charter to expand the ll·

Late last week, Auto Club Presi·

further delays would be "unac-

Council members expressed con-

"It would b a real black eye if

The Auto Club wants to expand
its current facility on Fairview

almost 1 million square feet. The
expansion would allow a consoli-

which is split between here and a
Los Angeles facili1y.
But, before the club can begin
building, the council must amend
the city's general plan and reionc
the project site from an industrial

A PLIAIANT SU•P•lll
Don't expect a gruff mechanic
smeared with grease to amble
up to your car if you drive to
Tuttle-Click Nissan in Costa
Mesa for service.
The fingernails on the
assistant service manager at this
dealership are painted red and
carefully manicured. She is every
bit a lady, from her pleasant
appearance to her gentle
demeanor.
Michelle Cramer, a Costa
Mesa resident, admits that some
people are surprised to see her
when they come into the garage.
"Sometimes I'll walk out and
people will say, 'Ooh, are you
the mechanic?' Some people
look at me like they don't think
I'm going to have the first clue
about their vehicle -and then
they're surprised when they find
out I do."
KNOWS HER STUFF
Although you won't ever see
Cramer with a wrench in her
hand, that doesn't mean she's
clueless about what may be
~iling your car. In fact,
sometimes she makes her male
customers blush.
Dale Mayeda, a Long Beach
man, recently took his 1989
Nissan Sentra to the dealership
for a tune-up. A regular
customer, he said he looks
forward to chatting with Cr;lmer
when he brings in his car.
"[ think I need a new timing •
belt," he told her as he popped
the hood.
Cramer bent over the engine
and poked around a bit.
"Y ou don't have a timing belt.
It 's a chain," she said.
"Oh," Mayeda replied,'
turning a bit pink.
UNPHASID BY SEXISM
For the most pan , Cramer
said her customers are extremely
friendly -even when she's the
·bearer of bad news.

"They feel more secure when a
woman is helping them."
Some patrons, however, would
rather talk to a man -plain
and simple.
"Sometimes there will be old
men, and they don't understand
how this young girl could
possibly know anything about
their car," Cramer said. ''They
want to talk to a guy.
Sometimes, when I answer the ,
phone, they think I'm a
secre tary. That gets irritating."
She said only twice in her
four-}ear career, however, has a
customer insisted on speaking
with a male mechanic.
"l didn't take it personally. I
just went and got one of the
guys," Cramer said.
ON THI FAST TRACK
At 25, Cramer finds herself in
a management position wi th a
well-established dealership. She
came to Tuttle-Click almost four
years ago as a telephone
operator. From there, she
moved to warranty
administration where she began
to learn about cars.
As assistant service manager,
she serves as the mjddle person
between customers and
mechanics.
"I have a real good time
doing my job," she said. ''.£very

NOTALONI
When she's not diagnosing
sick cars, Cramer enjoys
spending time with her husband,
Jamie, who is a railroad
engineer. "He~ trains," Cramer
said. He also spent several y~ars
singing in a Christian rock band,
Cramer said.
Although she admits her job is
somewhat unique for a woman,
Cramer said there are at least
two other women in Orange
County who do the same thing.
Acura on H arbor has a woman
service manager, and so does
South County Volkswagen in
Huntington Beach.
For those whq aren't
comfortable talking to a woman
about their car's problems,
Cramer has some frank advice:
"As far as I'm concerned, it's
their Joss, because I'm very good
at my job." ·

back in another

Well, you'll never believe who
my table companion was the other

Ann Rutherford herself, that's
who. And she didn't need a name
tag for labeling purposes. It's been
five or six decades, but I'd have
recognized th~ lustrous orbs
anytime, anywhere.
She motored here solo fro m the
Hills of Beverly, where she and
the late award-winning producer
Wiiiiam Dozier ("Batman", etc.)
shared the sal1}c manor since '43,
to join in yet another community

"Wouldn't h'ave missed this for

"They're the grandest people."
Super-grand herself is my new-

She's a vibrant lady, still in fine

Eagles' Jennings transfers to Newport

BY RlCHAl\.D DVNN, SPOaTS \Varna
Jenny Jennings, an All-Pacific'
Coas1 League selection for Es·
tancia High's girls basketball
team last season as a freshman,
has transferred to Newport Har-
bor, Sailors Coach Shannon Ja-
kosky confirmed Tuesday. .
· Jennings, an excellent long-range shooter
who averaged 9.5 points per game last season
for Coach Russ Davis' Eagles, enrolled at New-
port Harbor following spring break and has
been practicing with Jakosky's Sailors during
sixth period in the spring and the CIF·
mandated 15 days of full practices.
"(Jennings) absolutely loves 'the game and
she has a great attitude," said Jakosky, who
guided Newport Harbor to the CIF 111-AA and
Southern Regional finals, as well as leading the
Tars (24-8) to a school record in victories.
"I moved in with my dad, and l just got a
change of address," Jennings said. "So l didn't
transfer, I just moved."
Jakosky hopes that Jennings' work ethic will
rub off on other players.

players who really enjoy. the game, because it
improves the whole program. It's a real positive
thing to have a lot of gals who are dedicated
and want to do well."
I have to see her in action," Jakosky said. "She
can play both, but where she fits in will be dif·

Anderson and Jennings, a 5-

last season, should help keep the
Tars among the elite in Orange
County next season, with Diane
Pulido, Melissa Schutz and Mandy
Clayton returning as starters, as
well as guard Cara Heads, a solid
reserve player who missed most of
last season because of an injury.
"The Tars weren't going to Call
off the map even without Jenny,
but she's a sweet li11le addition to
what we already had," Jakosky

see who's rising to the top.
"But I've thoroughly enjoyed
working with Jenny. Jt was a big
shock to me. I never had any
forewarning."
Although Jennings is a talented
player, she must still learn Jako-
sky's system.
"She's very coachablc and she
has a great attitude, but she still
has a lot to team," Jakosky said.

she transferred. All I knew is that she was

If you run into a player or coach from
the 1993-94 Estancia High girls basketball
team, it'd be a good idea to stay away
from comersation having anything to do

Mustangs, the Costa Mesa High and
Trabuco Hills High variety, stampeded the
Eagles' P::icific Coast Le::igue title aspira-

Furthermore, Coach Russ Davis ag-
gravated a back problem on a horseback
riding outing betwee n road games at
Righetti and Atascadero in late De-
cember. '(he injury, which later required
surgery lo repair a slipped disc, left Davis
unable to coach the rest of the season.
Despite the turmoil, which includ.ed
sidelining injuries to starters Karla
Dominguez, Cyndi Richards and Jenny
Jennin~. the team finished with a spar·
