For years, the James Street alley has been a magnet for vagrants and vandals. Cluttered with gar· bagc, it provides shelter for tran- sients, as well as a dark corner for drug deals and gangbangers, locals say. Costa Mesa City Councilman Joe Erickson describes the alley as being cluttered wilh so much trash and debris that "when it rains you just about need a boat back there." West Side residents have long implored the city to clean up the lane. But the trouble, according to the city's Housing and Community Development coordinator Paula Schaefer, is that the alley is pri- vate. Newport library bpard expansion goes to voters BY Russ LoAll, STAfF wama NEWPORT BEACH -After an unusual parliamentary squab- ble, City Council members agreed Monday night to ask voters to ap- prove expansion of the library board from five to seven members. Newport Councilman John Hedges o~ected to the $7,000 cost of putting the measure on the bal- lot. But most council members said expansion of the library board is a good idea. "The people in this city really want to get involved in city gov- ernment," said Councilwoman Jean Wau. With support from Councilman Phil Sansone only, Hedges offered a substitute motion: Expand the li- brary board to 19 mef!lbers. "Just because there are lots of people who want to serve on the library board is not sufficient justi- fication to spend $7,000 on a bal- lot measure," Hedges said. NOTALONI When she's not diagnosing sick cars, Cramer enjoys spending time with her husband, Jamie, who is a railroad engineer. "He~ trains," Cramer said. He also spent several y~ars singing in a Christian rock band, Cramer said. Although she admits her job is somewhat unique for a woman, Cramer said there are at least two other women in Orange County who do the same thing. Acura on H arbor has a woman service manager, and so does South County Volkswagen in Huntington Beach. For those whq aren't comfortable talking to a woman about their car's problems, Cramer has some frank advice: "As far as I'm concerned, it's their Joss, because I'm very good at my job." · -Story by David Heitz, photo by Jean Angelo. Going crackers over Polly, the girl _ I'll never forget F lNAILY. AFl'ER AIL THESE YEARS, DINING WITH A GIRL OF MY DREAMS - Y'all remember Polly Local Scene Benedict, don't you? A beautiful brunelle with tantalizing figure, enchanting smile, and flashing black eyes? Or maybe you remember her as Ann Rutht rford. She was Polly only in those popular Andy Hardy movies, back in another lifetime when she played Mlckty Roonty's girlfriend: Well, you'll never believe who my table companion was the other night in the crowded ballroom of Le Meridien Hotel. Ann Rutherford herself, that's who. And she didn't need a name tag for labeling purposes. It's been five or six decades, but I'd have recognized th~ lustrous orbs anytime, anywhere. She motored here solo fro m the Hills of Beverly, where she and the late award-winning producer Wiiiiam Dozier ("Batman", etc.) shared the sal1}c manor since '43, to join in yet another community tribute to longtime frie'nds Donna and J ohn Crean. "Wouldn't h'ave missed this for •the world," beamed Mrs. Dozier. "They're the grandest people." Super-grand herself is my new- est charmer, who ·graced 76 (or was it 77?) Hollywood films. If you missed the Andy Hardy hits, you'll remember her in "Gone with the Wind," as Scarleu's youngest sis- ter, Careen, or her role in "Pride and Prejudice." She's a vibrant lady, still in fine fettle. Deep sigh. Sec you again, Polly, if only in my dr~ms. 0 WHERE HA VE ALL THE FISHIES GONE? -Tbe setting was incongruous, to say the least.
