"There has been a lot of mis·
understanding going around the
community about what we're
doing,'' Dakota said. "It's just
gelling worse and worse."

hearing for June 27.
Commissioners Tom Edwards
and Gary Pomeroy said ~Ibey
support the hostel as long as
city staff works with the ap-
plicants to find more parking.
Residents who live adjacent
to the proposed 4,300-square-
foot site at 430 32nd St. say it ·
is extremely small and very
short on parking. Only three
parking spaces are available
and city staff believes at least a
dozen arc needed.
But Dakota said the inves-
tors, Andrew Grace and Philip
Boston, have been working dih·
gently ' to find additional park· •
ing spaces. He believes nine
more spaces soon will be se-
cured.
"Once the parking issue is
resolved, I really don't know
what other issues remain," he
said.
Nearby residents repeatedly
have said they believe the low-
cost housing would attract va·
grants• and inland youth who
want a cheap vacation on the
beach.
!Grace and B,oston propose
charging backpackers and other
international travelers between
Sl2 and S.15 per night, much
like similar youth hostels in Eu-
rope.
Although the accommo<la-
tions are no-frills, weary visitors
are provided with a bunk bed
and a drawer where they can
lock their belongings.

Future of Bacchi• 81111 uncertain
"You can't ask a leopard to
be a lion,'' he said,. ~ Officials from
controversial nightclub
have been meeting with
city, police in order to
reopen doors.
BY DAVID lh1TZ, STAFF WIUTI&
LIDO MARINA VILLAGE
-The future of Bacchus, the
trendy Lido nightclub which po·
lice have tried to permanently
put out Q( business, is still up in
the air. ..
Newport City Manager Kevin
Murphy said the club's investors
have been meeting privately with
Police Chief Bob McDoncll and
other city administrators in re·
cent weeks. They're trying to
strike a deal to keep the club
open.
Murphy said the club's lawyer,
former Newport Beach City At-
torney Hugh Coffin, also has
been corresponding with city of·
ficials.
"I think their hope was that
they could c-0mc up with some-
thing that would be acceptable
to both parties," Murphy said.
"If they lose the permit, they
lose value in the land."
Corrin did not return tcle·
phone calls and representatives
for Bacchus could not be
reached for comment.
The Planning Commission
voted last month to revoke Bae·
chus' permit, which allows the
Lido Marina Village business to
operate as a nig~tclub. . . .
The commission's dec1s1on 1s
not final unless it is upheld by
the City Council, which has
postponed voting on the issue
until June 27.
Murphy said Bacchus' owners
are negotiating to put "some
kind of new use" on the site. He
would not specify whcth~r the
new business would be another
nightclub, possibly with more re:
strictions than Bacchus, or a res·
taurant.
Several weeks ago, the night·
club's investors 1old lhe Plan·
ning Commission that they
would like to make Bacchus a
dinner theater.
Murphy said he hasn 't heard
anything about that, adding that
he doubts there will be any
"dramatic" changes made to the
nightclub.
Meanwhile, 1hc club has
closed its doors at least tempo.
rarity and the telephones ha~·c
been disconnected. ,_,
An official from the state de-
partment of Alcoholic Beverage
Control said last month that she
believes Bacchus was ordered
closed by the state Board of
•Equalization, which govern)
sales tax matters. She declined
further comment.
Besides its ongoing baule with
police, Bacchus has been cited
for violating state Alcoholic Dev.
eragc Control standards.
Police Chief McOonell said
office rs have visited Bacchus ·61
times since its grand opening
seven months ago. Arrests ha\c:
been made for possession of
drugs, public drunkenness, fight·
ing and drunken driving.
The department's ongoing
battle with Bacchus culminated
in March, when rioters freed a
prisoner from a police car.
Bacchus managing partner
Rob Mitchell has said the night·
club's management learn has
been significantly restructured
since the incident.

recently, he likes males more than
females. He's really messed up."
B ut first Hiby communicated
with a bearded collie named
Shap. "He likes the unell of
peanut butter," Hiby said,
touching Shag's collaf with her
eyes closed as the pet's owner -
armed with a tape recorder -
nodded in amazement.
Next up was another bearded
collie named Thunder. "She'd
really like to learn more tricks,"
Hiby told owner Linda West while

of water and taunting a caged cat.
"And she's annoyed at people who

Afterward. West, a Newpon

Her pet's peace of mind didn't
come cheap, however. Hiby

that many pct psychics out there.
In ract, Hiby's rare telepathic
talents have landed her guest spots
on television talk shows across the
country, including "48 Hours,"
"Hard Copy" and "Late Night
with David Letterman."
Off camera, Hiby said, Late
Show host David Letterman asked
her to merge minds with his two
dogs. "He was moving and he was
concerned about whether they
were going to adjust to it," Hiby
said. "He also wondered if, with
his busier schedule, they were
lonely witho~t him."
Letterman could not be reached
to confirm this. "He just wouldn't
comment on that son of thin&,''
said one Late Show spokesman ~
when contacted minutes before
the prosram was scheduled for
taping in New York. •
A New York native hersclr,
Hiby has been reading animals'
minds for more than a decade, she
said. She found her calling whe n
she met another pct psychic while
working at a horse rarm in New
Jersey.
"When 1 heard she was coming
down to talk to the horses 1 was
like 'Yeah, right,'·: Hiby recalls.
"l was very skeptical."
She became a believer, however,
after witnessing the psychic peg
the weak spots and injuries of
each of the farm's 45 horses. An
animal nurse at the time, Hiby
gave it all up to follow her new ,,
guru.

Hiby, howe'Ver, said most clients

docs my pct want to check out?"
T he list of clients sh e touts is
impressive, ranging from the
British equestrian team to
celebrities such as actresses Belly

Hiby's most famous animal
client is Cire, the 5-foot iguana in
Phil Collins' music video "I Can't

Wilma's Patio
Charles Robertson, presi-
dent of the Mesa Verde
Homeowners Association,
agrees and says <the club
seems unwilling to compro-
mise on the zoning issue.
Last week, City Council
asked the Pla nning Com-
mission to review the feasi-
bility of maintaining the
site's industrial park desig-
nation but amending city
regulations enough to allow
the expansion to proceed.
At the time, Auto Club of-
ficiars said that option
"wouldn't work."
"When an applicant files
for a general plan amend-
ment, normally one goes to
the city hat-in-hand -one
docs not usually make de-
mands," Robertson says.
"But, the Auto Club's posi-
tion has· not changed one
inch, even though they've
known for weeks that the
(Mesa Verde) homeowners
association has major objc:c-
tions to what they're trying
to do."
The commission will re-
view the zoning alte rnative
on Monday, prior to the
council meeting. Both Rob-
ertson and Willems say that
if the city and the club can
reach some "middle
ground," then they'll be in
full support of an expansion.
"But, we do not want that
area to become an urban
commercial center," Rob-
ertson says, spcakjng on be-
half of the association. "We
think that a 50% increase in
dc:nsity is too much."
Other·rcsidents say that a
general plan amendment
and a slight increase in traf-
fic is a small price to pay for
what the project could mean
to the city's economy. Cur-
rently, the company gener-
ates $2.2 million in annual
revenue and employees
more than 1,000 people.
With the expansion, those
numbers could double, ac-
cording to a recent study.
"AJI of those Auto Club
employees, regardless of
where they live, they spend
money here," Hernandez
said. "They leave their cars
with businesses that are
here for repairs, they need
to buy th eir husbands and
wives , gifts. They don't cat
lunch in the caf ctcria all the
time, so they spend money
in our restaurants."
The facility, which houses
one of the club's two ad-
ministrative staffs, doubles
as a training site. The com-
pany pays hotel expenses for
trainees from outside of
Southern Californfa.
"Those people rent cars,
stay in hotels, cat in restau-
rants -all those good
things," Hernandez said. "l
th ink it would be a tre-
mendous loss to the city if
they (the Auto Club) left, l
think we'd end up with an
empty building there and a
tremendous loss of revenue
toJhe city."
The children of Fred Young and
Patricia Crowell have threatened
to file lawsuits against the city,
saying the city was negligent in not
immedia tely installing a signal
after Consuelo Aceveza suffered
major head injuries after being hit
in the same crosswalk in 1990.
The city is still in litigation over
the Acevcza case. No claims have
been filed yet on behalf of Young \
or Crowell. "
Driver Francisco Jimenez, 25,
told police the rising sun had been
in his eyes, blocking his view,
when he hit Young and Crowell in
March. Several witnesses have
called P<>lice to back Jimenez on
this point.
