NEWPORT BUDGET
BLUES ... First came layoffs.
Then came reductions in capital
improvement spending. Now it's
time to adopt a thrifty $98 mil-
lion city budget.
After several months or pain-•
fol discussions, the Newport
Beach City Council will of-.
fieially apprQve its budget at to-
night's City Council meeting.
Several items remain un-
funded, however, including an
annual $25 ,000 grant for cul-
tural events, a Red Cross trailer
for the Fire Department and
the conversion or the Newport
Pier parking lot to "pay as you ao" -a project the City Coun-
cil discussed shortly after last
. summer's shootings. Several
council members argued that an
around-the-clock parking at-
tendant would provide muc h
needed security in the area.
The council will take straw
votes on whether to pay for the
projects, any one or which
would pencil the budget into
the red. ·
The meeting begins at 7 to-
night in the counci l chambers at
City Hall, 3300 Newport Dlvd.

whether to sh ut down Dacchus,

club where rowdy p'lltron!> over-

According to City Manager
Kevin Murphy, Police Chief
Bob McDonell and other city
officials have been meeting \\ith
the nigh tclubs investors, trying
to hammer-out an agreement
-which would resti1t-iA Bacchus

TIME TO GET HOSTEL ...
A pair or young Australian in·
vestors who want to bring a
youth hostel to Cannery Village
will finally find out tonight
whether their dream will be-
come reality -or just an ex-
pensive nightmare.
Andrew Grace and Philip
Boston have been leasing a .
4,300-square-root building at ~:
;. 430 32nd St. in hopes of open·
ing a 50-bed youth hostel there.
The Planning Commission
turned down their proposal ear-
lier this month, saying there's
not enough-on-site parking.
Although Grace :ind Doston
believe they have secured ad·
ditional parking spaces, several
council members say they're
worried the hostel is too clo!>e
to residential neighborhoods. . 0

Wetzel, a teacher and former

Most of our time was spent puttering, an

The greatest trial!; were the stress-free evenings

Worst-'3se scenarios'crossed our furrowed brows.

During the final week we caught one another ac

Going on the worry wagon was p·valuable and

only football experience comes
through nostalgic get-togethers
with ex-teammates and former

.. Painter's nickname was Bonzo

'Whatever happened to Bonzo?' "
Painter, who matured early but
later found himself dwarfed by

freshman and sophomore years at
Corona dcl Mar High Sdl"ool as a
small but deadly nose JUard.
Quickness and aggressiveness
helped him earn team Defensive

seasons, as the Sea Kings rolled to
a combined 16-0-1 record.
But when a severe knee injury
negated some of that quickness,
Painter's varsity career never
materialized.
Brahs has been tougher to keep
track of. According to 35-year
Harbor Arca Baseball coaching
veteran Luke Davis, Brahs would
routinely strike out 18 hitters per
six-inning $ame, and hit
double-digit home runs each
season.
"I don't know whatever became
of him (Brahs)," said Davis, a
living library or the now-defunct
Harbor Arca Baseball program.
"He attended a cou}>le of different
high schools. and colleges, and
pitched a~hile in the Montreal

Grant cites Jerrott Willard,
Danny O'Neil, Scan Turner and
J.R. Walz among the many Junior

Mayer, a native of Chicago where
his clad, the late Pete Mayer, had
served as a police officer for many
years, enjoyed following the pro
games. "It was a lot of fun," he said,
"but these guys today are so much
bigger when we were playing •• and

He ought to know, based on his
linebacking days at San Jose with
teammate Walsh and his pedod of
time with the old Orange County
Rhinos, a semipro club, that often
overpowered its rivals.
But it took a severe toll on his
@
knee .
He recalled one humorous incident
after his tormenting days at San Jose.
Co llege injuries had convinced him
to fade from football, but he was
tempted once after being called for
submarine service at the San Diego
nava l base, circa 1954.
The naval coach had heard of
Mayer's exploits and tried to sell him
on sweet duty in a hobby shop ("some
nice girls work there, too.") if he
would play football. Otherwise, the
choice was submarine duty.
A perceptive Mayer asked, "What's
yo ur fi rst game?:' T~e c~ach replied,
"UCLA." Needless to sa~, Mayer
chose submarine service.
Still, he later dropped a dime in
the slot for 'a newspaper to read the
outcome. He could have saved the
