BY DAVID HEITZ, STAff Wan n NEWPORT BEACH -Stark pictures taken at an Irvine indus· trial park. A pink, rubber eraser elephantized to 20 times its size. It's not evidence from a murder scene -it's two pieces of the Newport Harbor Art Museum's 2,000-item permanent collection. The museum is in the early stag· es of a S6 million fund-raising campaign to expand into the former Newport Center Library, doubling its gallery space to 23,670 square feet and giving its perma· nent collection more room to breathe. Beginning July 19, a glimpse of the little-known collection goes on display at the museum, located at . 850 San Clemente Drive. It will be the first time in almost three years that the public has had a peck at the collection of contem· porary artwork, which will cause some museum-goers to wonder how the past relates to the fut ure -and Others to just wonder. "The dilemma of our lives is that there is no single hegemonic ·basis on which to base anything," Chief Curator Bruce Guenthe r said. "Contemporary art mirrors the diversity and the complexity of our society." Museum officials admit that ex- pansion into the former library is a far cry from the SSO million signa· ture building which the museum's board originally envisioned. But it's for more realistic. When the city announced con- struction of the new library on Av- ocado Avenue, The livine Co. ar- ranged a land swap which resulted in the museum getting the olJ li- brary -and the land -scot-free. It's a major expansion for a brave little museum that has marched through one roadblock after another. The cruisers included representatives of many major Orange Councy hotels as well as other event planners. Elisa M. Mohr, vice • president of Adventures at ._---Sea, the .-Newport ·-Beach-based yacht charter Behind the Scenes company that owns the Dream• Maker, promised a memorable evening viewing the fireworks while cruising the Newport Harbor. Little did she know just how memorable. Guests· were treated to not only the Newport Dunes fireworks show, but also viewed fireworks froryt Big Canyon Country Club, the Costa Mesa Rqtary show .at Orange Coast College as well as displays from Dana Point and Huntington Beach. It was a beautiful display of the American tradition, fireworks exploding in the distance to the north, cast and south or the yacht. The real adventure began as the Dream Maker attempted to return to its dock, frozen in reverse. The yacht circled the harbor in reverse in front of ~he Balboa Pa' ilion and B:ilboa island Ferry travel lanes. Dream Maker Captain Mike Crawley, a former Coast Guard skipper, realized he had a difficult problem which couldn't be fixed at sea and called for help. To the rescue came three boats from the Orange County Sheriffs Department Harbor Patrol y.iith blue lights flashing. One tossed a tow line and began pulling the Dream Maker, a second tied up along side the yacht a·nd began pushing. The third sheriffs boat cleared the way for the trip back ·to the dock at 3101 West Coast Highway. On Tuesday, they replaced the 25-cent steel elbow from the yacl)t's hydraulic syi..tcm, which caused the reverse problem. , Jim de Boom is the ouner of The fa ent Office, 1J school trustee Dnd D communit) activist. llis column Dppeors e••ery Friday. T he 11th ann ual Nike National Junior Invi tational Volleyball Championships at Davis, was a tremendously successful event for the Orahge County Volleyball Club. From the opening ceremonies at Sacramento's Arco Arena to Saturday's divisional playoffs with two national championship matches and another Nike Cup Championship for best overall club performance, the weeklong activities were great for all 14 OCVBC teams. Opening ceremonies featured CdM's Kristen Campbell, who was selec1ed to speak to the 7,000 participants as the Festival\ outstanding achieving woman. Her reflections on the achievements and commitments of her volleyball career drew rave reviews from everybody, including Festival organizers Dave and Bernice Epperso n. The OCVBC 18s team was on stage for the ofncial opening of the games by Cal women's coach Dave OeGroot, because OCVBC won last year's Nike Club Cup. The 14s tournament fin ished on Satu rday with OCVBC 14 Blue finishing sixth. Entering as the fourth seed, they lost to eventual champion Asics Rainbows of Hawaii in the semifinal in a tough three-garne r. The loser's bracke t loss to Coast ot San Diego placed them sixth in the 200·team draw. Orange County's 16 Blues wo n the national championship with a two-game sweep of South Bay from Manhattan Beach. OCVBC 16 Blue has won every major tournament all year long, but this championship was not a "ho-hum" event as evidenced by Thursday's matches, which were all decided in a third-game rally sco re after OCVBC lost the first game.
