Bicyclists in favor of extending the oceanfront boardwalk and homeowners who want to leave it as is will square off today as the Newport Beach City Coun- cil discusses the path's future. The council's ad hoc Bicycle Trnil's Com.miltee is split over whether to extend the trail. Those who want the trail lengthened to the Santa Ana River Jetty say it would provide a much safer route to l lunting- ton Beach than the current trail, which stops at 38th Street and diverts cyclists to Seashore Drive. . Residents opposed to the project say it would destroy an unspoiled stretch of beach and devalue bcachfront properties. U nder Sunday afternoon's bright sun, the Newport Beach Central Library looked like a new hardback book wrapped in cellophane - shiny, crisp and waiting to be opened. Hordes of people eyed the new $8.2 million structu~. lt!) inviting facade of bronze and steel begged people to come inside, much like an unforgettable book title. While dignitaries gave speeches about the tremendous community effort that went into building the library, folks nudged their noses against closed doors, trying to sneak a peck. Most everyone took advantage of the free food provided by local eateries. Then, in one quick snip, Newport Beach Mayor Clarence Turner cut the ribbon. More.. than 1,000 balloons lurched skyward, forming an arch over the library's entrance. The electronic doors flew open and a crowd estimated at 3,000 walked on a· red carpet as they poured into the 54,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art structure. "Wow, this is huge," said one boy who looked about 10 years old, dressed in sneakers and a baseball cap. "Tremendous," said an elderly woman as she began to cry. "Unbelievable -ocean views. Bv Douo SMJTH, snc1A1. ro ma DAJ.LT P1toT The Costa Mesa Little League Junior All-Stars (13-year-olds) had little trouble defeating Robin- wood, 7-1, in the first round ot the District 62 Little League Tournament Saturday behind great pitching and defer.se. Starting pitcher Steve Leece pitched a two-hit complete game. Leece struck out five and walked only four batters. "Leece pitched a great game today," said Coach Brad Via. Every pitcher needs great defense behind him and Leece got it. Shortstop Brett Becker made three out- standihg plays. Two of Becker's major league plays were_ rally-killing. ' • Another key performer was center fielder Stephen Gormen. Gormen made perhaps the play of the game. With runners on second arid third and two outs, Robinwood catcher Greg Bambi hits a shot deep into the gap in left-center and Gormen on a dead sprint caught up to it and made a lunging catch. "Defense and pitching was th.e key for our victory today;' Via explained. Costa Mesa put the game out or reach in the fourth inning, scoring three runs to up the score to 7-0. Mesa got a little help from Robinwood's pitch- ing, which walked in two runs. Robinwood pitchers walked in four Costa Mesa runs. "I'm real proud of the kids today. They played real smart after they got the early lead. They played with a lot of heart," said Via. Dukes rolling Abshire No. 1 at Bastille Day runs ~ Newport Beach 3-0 with 29-19 rout of Sacramento Saturday night; Invading Idaho expected to become mashed potatoes Tuesday night. NEWPORT BEACH -With just three matches in the books and Idaho slat· ed to invade Tuesday night, the-Newport Beach Dukes are threatening to make the West Division race in World TeamTennis a runaway. The Dukes paid a little price for their 29- 19 rout of Sacramento Saturday night in the form of a shoulder injury to women's stand- out Zina Garrison-Jackson, but early indica- tions were that it was not of such serious nature to put her on the sidelines for any length of time, if at all. ... Playing before a John Wayne Tennis Club crowd of some 2,000, Newport Beach jumped to an lS-10 halftime lead. Garrison-Jackson and Larisa Neiland had little trouble with Debbie Graham and Kimberly Po in the match's opener, women's doubles, taking a 6-3 decision; and Garrison-Jackson followed il up with a 6-4 win over Graham in women's singles. ... Trevor Kronemann and Kelly Jones fol- lowed with a 6-3 men's doubles victory over David MacPherson and Sandon Stolle and the match was virtually locked at that point. The win ups the Dukes' record to 3-0 in tl~e West. Idaho and Sacramento are lag- ging two games back of the Dukes. FEED ~He puts away men's competition easily.
