An airport at El Toro .will land county in trouble
aY aUTM NULIMYI
H idden on page 18 of the Los
Angeles Tunes, Section A.
June 20, was a 133-word
"blurb" infonnin& us of, "Jct
Makes Low Pass Over Santa
Ana." Now, that area is pretty MU
packed with humanity to be bavin& all
that noise and dangerous activity ~g
on in our skies. How many more lost"
pilots will be feeling their way through
the dark over packed-in muses of vul-
nerable, helpless citizens of Orange
County, if we allow a second airport to
be operated in this area?
Pretty dangerous stuff, if you ask me.
Then there's the subject of air pollu-
tion with a doubling of over-bead air
traffic beyond what we already have,
daily roaring in and out of John Wayne
Airport. Also, there's the unwelcome in-
crease in street traffic, bound to take
place. Haven't we had enough increase
in the last 15 years, what with the huge
rise in population. There will be thou-
sands of people driving up and down the
coast, and from the greater Inland Em·
pire. Also, we will need a larger police
traffic force, and that's not even begin-
ning to mention the cost of more para-
med ics, ambulances, and tow-trucks.
Whoever thought of El Toro as a sec-
ond airport, here in our midst, has come
up with the lousiest idea ever. And I
'"ould venture to say thal city fa1hcrs
who think we're going to realize a r,reat
· hike in dollar iQtakc arc wrong. We will
be paying out far more than the incom·
ing revenue the "chiefs" think we will be
"raking in."
Ruth Hulsm:Jn is a rtsident of N~-
port Beach Having an airport at El Toro is a lousy Idea, according to one reader, because it will lncr~ase traffic, population llnd the. need for more police.

MONDAY HIGHLIGHTS
Some Pig: Hillary, the
fairgrounds' 18-month·old, b lack
and white Hampshire pig, gave
birth to five piglets over the
weekend, fair officials reported
Monday. Hillary weighed in at 300
pounds during her pregnancy.
AUendance: Monday's
attendance was 13,183 as of 6 p.m.
Fair attendance during the first
weekend actually beat out last
year's figures, showing a slight
increase in the number or paying
fairgoers , officials said.
A total of a 93,843 people
flocked to the fair this weekend,
compared to last yoar's record of
92,343 paid admissions for the
opening weekend.
Fair officials originally thought
this year's opening weekend total
would be lower b~cause of the
schedule of events on Opening
Day.
"Last year on Friday we had
Kid's Day and there was a big
crowd that attended that day,"
said Lynn Schultz, the !air's
assistant media relations manager.
"This year Kid's Day has been
moved to Thursday and we expect
a larger attendance·than on
Friday."
Entertainment: Former Doobie
Brothers musician Michael
McDonald played to an
enthusiastic crowd at the Pacific
Amphitheatre Monday night.
The keyboard-vocalist'.s pJaylist
opened with a tune from his
former band and was sprinkled
with material from his more recent
solo efforts.
McDonald played such favori\es ,
as "Minute By Minute," "What a
Fool Believes," and a rousing
version of the Doobies' "Tak.in' it
to the Streets." McDonald played
two encores which included a
cover version of Marvin Gaye's
"What's Going On."

North Jersey's Dana Owens,
AKA Queen Latifah, the
24-year-old purveyor of hip hop
classics "Ladies First" and "fly
Girl" and the star of Fox TV's
"Living Single" entertained a
near-capacity crowd at the Pacific
Amphitheatre Sunday night -
proving that there really is no
need to put Queen in front of the
name Latifah.
Latif ah's hour-long
performance, spanning her three
albums, was capped by the hit
"U.N.l.T.Y." -before which she
exuded the audience to ''walk
together in unity and mutual
respect."

Prager's younger days lull of woe
This is the second of tM-o

I n 1939, Hans Prager, now a
successful area restaurateur,
was 10 years old and living
with his Cather, mother and
sister in Nari Germany. As Jews
they were suffering terrible
persecution, which culminated in
his Cather being incarcerated in
a concentration camp.

Unfortunately for them, 1939
was the year Hitler invaded
Poland, WWll started and Italy
joined the Axis and the Pragers
were no longer safe in Trieste.
So they took off to the only
place that offered them refuge,
the open city of Shanghai. The
rest of the world had slammed
its doors on Jewish ref ugces.
When they arrived in
Shanghai, Hans' fa ther v.as able
to find employment and thus
was able to keep his family from
starving. Then came 1941.
.
Japan, which alread1 controlled
Shanghai, became another
panner with Germany an the
Axis. Now, the Jews in Shangh:ii
were not only statele~s. the)
were singled out for specia l
treatment because they were
Jews.
They "ere put into
concentration camp:. much like
the one from Hans' fa ther had
escaped in Germany. The only
difference was that J~pan's
cooperation \\ilh Germany
hadn't progrc:.scd a:. far as the
gas chambl!r -yet.
Fortunately the lnternation;il
Red Cross operated a kind of
soup kitchen, "hich kept the
Jewish people from starving.
Hans' mosl vivid memories of
that p:lrt of hi life is standing in
seemingly endless lines for
someching 10 eat. It w:b not 3
good life.
This nightmare was
aggravated by bombing r:.11ds on
Shanghai by American bombers
that were trying to destroy
Japan's wartime economy
insofar as it was located in
Shanghai.
-Unhappily, those v.ere before
the days of so-called pinpoint
bombing and the bombs fell on
everyone in Shanghai, even on
stateless Jews living in
concentration cam'ps.
Fina lly, in 1945, the w:ir cJme
to an end, the Je\\S \\ere
released from their
concentration camps and the
bombing ended. H3ns' father
had died, but Hans, his mother
and sister still exbted 1n
Shanghai as stateless people.
Finally, in 1947, when Hans was
18, the nightmare came 10 an
end.
Dy an amazing set of
circumstances involving the
discovery of a remote relative
living in California and a
good-natured consul gener31 in

The board currently hu the

vices director. who also serves as
city librarian. That duty would be
deleted under the proposed char-
ter amendments.
Currently, the board has the
power to suspend or remove the
community services director, as
well as evaluate her performance.
Board members repeatedly have
praised the current Community

But residents who oppose the
trail extension say it would ruin an
unspoiled stretch of beach while
creating litter, noise and crime.
They also argue it would pose a li-
ability threat to the city.
"I personally don't see how you
can keep a major bike trail on the
sand free from hazard," . Doug
Boyd said.
Ocean Front homeowner Lila
Morgan ref erred to those opposed
to the project as the "West New-
port Beach apartheid."
She said she almost was in an
itz. In doing 50, they have said
they want to make sure future
community services directors have
the same commitment to libraries
that she does.
Turner emphasized that the
board has ·done an "outstanding
job" in the past.
Still, at a meeting July 5, the
board voted unanimously to op-
pose the proposed changes.
"We really believe that the citi-
zens of our community need more
time to live with the organization
that we now have," board chair-
woman Jean J(jger said.

said she supports extension of the
trail because it would take bicy-
clists off Seashore Drive and make
the thoroughfare safer for school
children on foot.
"As long as the issue is bounced
back from committee to com-

said. ''Oceanfront views will be

will be compromised."

SPORTS EDITOR ROGER CARLSON, 642-030, ext. 387
Mesa's Les Miiier coming up on yet another Big 'O'
~That's as in '8-0' as he looks ahead
to '5-0' with annual Lions Club Fish Fry.
L cs Miller, the Harbor High football coach in
1943-45, recently completed his 49th year of
service to the Costa Mesa-Newport Harbor
Lions Club Fish Fry, then beamed happily
ov~r the 15th annual Les Miller student
awards program for Costa Me~.
He turns 80 Nov. 11.
One might assume that the 1990-91 Or?flge Cgast
College Citizen of the Year may be preparing a solid
retirement announcement in the near future.
Quite the contrary. . ,
One could sense his enthusiasm recently as he
lauded all nis compadres in Lions and said, "Our 0th
consecutive Fish Fry is next year and we are making
plans now." the impression is that he and the Lions
will make No. SO extra special.
As most know, the Fish Fry in come, save for
expenses, always goes to commendable harbor area
causes. And it would be intriguing to learn what the
total contribution has been over the past 49 years.
He said, "As of now, our gross income for 1994 was
over $160,000 -not our best year, but pretty good." It
helped c-0mpensate for 1993 when unexpected rain
diminished the crowds.
Although he retired from education 22 years ago, he
has maintained a busy pace since that time. And it is
conceivable ~e may well be the most active sports
1947 on his Tar Bees. "I always 5Cnsed Mel had
promise," he said. "In fact, he was playing tailback
behind a senior his first year." Smalley eventually
went on to become the third highest individual scorer
in Tar history with 134 points under Irwin, the v:irsity
coach. ·
Although the Kansas' native h.as w~rked wi.th many
outstanding student leaders dunng has coaching years.
one of his favorites was Carleton (Bud} Mears, Class
of '49. "He was very dedicated, smart and loyal," he
said, adding, "He was a smooth field general at
quarterback."
With amusement, there was a Bee game in 1947 at
Huntington Beach and Miller, who had correctly
assessed that fiis team had "fallen asleep" on him
with an 0-26 lag on the scoreboard at halftime, was fit
lobe tied.
H er stopped the team from trotting to the locker
room. He indicated that the performance was
so bad that the players could spend halftime in
one end zone trying to snap out of the doldrums, then
added he was going to spend the second half in the
stands.
The shock was sufficient for the Tars to pull up at
intermission after QB Mears added his support to
Miller's observations.
The second half score was: Harbor 12, Huntington
Beach O. Although his club lost, 26-12, he had made
DAtLY rr1.0T ni.a •Horo his point and the team went home with a fair salvage

booster for boys and girls in all harbor area schools. He tries to
balance ou t his attendance in all sports seasons and always knows
how all the teams have fared.
Bernau, Web Jones and others.
He laughed to say, "We arc still working on the prol>Jems of
the world, but we haven't solved them all yet." ·
In a session oflooking back, he was asked why the late R:ilph
Recd, long-time Harbor High Athletic Director, used to have
Miller's name printed on the 1943-45 grid programs as a
graduate of the University of Kansas.
On the somber side, Miller has also shared periods
of sorrow this past year with others over the losses of a number
of close friends and former players.
. One of his closest friends, the late Don Ilurns, passed away
last fall of a heart attack. Burns was the Harbor grid coach in
1956-57 and later followed Miller to Mesa High. He was pleased
with the funeral tribute where more than 300 people turned out
to deliver last respects.
I t is fair to assume, however, that the highlight for him last
year was following the Costa Mesa Mustangs to the ClF
football championship finals, noting that he once served as
the school's principal many years ago. W ith amusement, he replied, "l once asked him that,
reassuring him that it was Baker University. His answer
Then c:i me the loss of three of Harbor's finest guards, 1948-50,
over the winter period, including John Kingston, Joe Noel and
Bill Wittman. He had coached both Kingston and Wittman as
Dee~ with lofty words for both gridders.
Still, he keeps a close tab on Harbor High athletics with a
' feeling of "family" ties since he was hired as a coach and teacher
' there in 1943 with a starting salary of $2,400.
. was, 'Les, no one would ever know where Baker
University was.' "
He laughs, looking back. "That doesn't sound like much now, Miller, who was the chief workhorse on the Harbor High
football history booklet in 1989, recalled a Oow of amusements
while trying to coordinate all the budgetary needs and updated
news for those planning to attend.
He had a fond recall on Kingston as a very coachablc player.
"Once I called Johnny out and said, 'You're not going to let that
guy push you around, are you?' " he said, then laughed to recall
"how fired up Kingston became as he raced back on the field to
prove his worth."
but it was a fair salary then." ·
Although he stays energized with current events in the area
and can still tell Ofle how his alma mater, Baker University,
• Kansas, is doing in football each year, he still enjoys angling on
down memory lane with old friends.
Some of them still meet every Thursday morning for breakfast
• in Costa Mesa, which often includes Al Irwin, Roger Neth, Bill '
I
"I thought we had it all together until Mel Smalley showed up
for the reunion two weeks early," he said. With a chuckle, he
noted that Smalley had to return north to Lodi, but wasn't
discouraged. "Mel was back in two weeks."
Miller concluded, "We'll miss them all, that's for sure."

And he isn't the only Sneaker with local ties.

DANA POINT -Its primary goal
having already been accomplished,
the Newport Harbor Baseball As·
sociation's Pony League Broncos set
about adding a little icing to the
cake.
After earning an automatic berth
in the Southern California Sectional
Tournament with a win over Garden
Grove on Sunday, Newport met
Ocean View Monday at Del Obispo
Park in a rematch to determine the
district champion.
Needing to win a doubleheader
for the title, Newport was unable to
force a decisive second game, losing
a 13·3 decision to Ocean View in a
game shortened to five innings by a
mercy rule.
Ocean View had defeated New-
port. 6-3, in an earlier meeting in
the double-elimination tournament
Sunday morning.
Each team moves on in sectional
play, with Newport facing Fountain
Valley A on Thursday night at 7:30.
All games in the seven-team double-
elimination sectional tournament are
scheduled for Mile Square Park in
Fountain Valley.
The succession of games, which in·
eluded two on Sunday, took its toll
on the Newport squad, especially the
pitching staff.

Newport Harbor's Scott Beerer tags out Ocean View's Edmund Acosta in Bronco Division playoff action.
"We viewed today's game as a fun game," said
Newport Manager Paul Cohen. "We wanted to
make sure everyone got in and played. And we
knew we had to win a doubleheader, and we were
running out of pitchers."
Newport actually enjoyed a pair of early leads.
The local team jumped to a 2-0 advantage after the
first half-inning, thanks to a two-out rally.
Scott Beerer singled and stole second. Scott Tip·
pelt hit a ball off the Ocean View pitcher's glove ,
and after the pitcher scrambled to recover the ball,
his throw went wide of the target, allowing Beerer
to score.
Nick Langsdorf singled to left and Justin Jacobs'
line drive was misjudged, scorina Tippett. However.
the throw .in from th~ oulfidd.beat. Lanpdorf, who
was taaaed out at the plate.
Newpon broke a 2-2 tic in the top of the second
without the benefit of a rut. Mau Glover walked
and wu bunted to second by Scou Perkins. Blake
Tippett then reached on an error, which allowed
Glover to sc:ore.
After that, nearly alt or ttie hijhlights belong to
'
Ocean View, which scored four in the second, two
in the third,,.one in the fourth and clinched the de·
cision by building the 10-run advantage with four
more in the fifth.
"We had some errors, which really hurt us at
some key times," said Cohen.
Ocean View's attack featured a home run and
five doubles, while Newport was limited to three
hits by two OV pitchers.

Robinwood tahied three times in the top of the

home half, thanks to seven walks and just two hits.
Mesa relied on the solid pitching of Bryce Sheri·

walks to go with his four strikeouts. "We had some
real smart baserunning and some excellent de·

Nick Cabico and Orea Perrine each scored three
runs, with Cabico lashinJ out a pair of hits.
