Kienitz, whose six children have made her a

BY TINA BOJ.GA1TA, STAIF Wuna
B ob Phillips has investigated some
or the city's grisliest murder
cases, played the part of a drug
dealer and appeared on the cover of
True Detective Maguine.
And on Wednesday, the 18-year
veteran of the Costa Mesa Police ·
Department was named the ci ty's top,
cop for 1993.
He and six other Police Department
employees were honored at the
chamber of commerce's 31st Annual
Police Awards Luncheon, held at the
Westin South Coast Plaza Hotel.
Assemblyman Gil Ferguson and
Mayor Sandy Genis offered word~ of
praise, and the recipients were
presented commendations from Sen.
Marian Bergeso11 and Congressmen
Dana Rohrbacher and Chris Cox.
Phillips -who's currently assigned
to the department's patrol division -
was the first to be honored, with Police
Chief Dave Snowden lauding his
accomplishments, which were "too
numerous to mention."
"Everybody in the department, from
the cadets to the captains. were
involved in the nominations," Snowden
said. "And Bob won nearly unanimous
votes Crom the department officers and
staff." ~
Phillips graciously accepted the
award, dedicating the "crowning
honor" to his 75-year-old father, who
he calls his "inspiration and mentor."
"He's the cornerstone of my
development,'' Phillips said after the
luncheon. "Whether I wanted lo be an
auto mechanic or a magician al
Disneyland, he instilled in me the
confidence that I could do it. I chose
to be a policeman, and he stood by me
and gave me his full support. So,, any
achievement that l am awarded, l
really have to give him all the credit."
And Phillips' record is chock-full
achievements.
Last year, he finished an eight-year
stint in the department's detectives
bureau, investigating several homicides
-the most shocking of which was the
murder of 56-year-old Bill Nelson, who
was killed and dismembered by his
23-year-old wife, Omaima, in
November 1991. Police found garbage
bags full of Nelson's body pans in the
couple's Elden Avenue apartment.
"At the time, it was being caJled the
most gruesome case in Orange
County," Phillips said. "In fact, that's
the one that got me on the cover of
True Detective."
While he found working the
homicide detail exciting and
challenging, Phillips said his biggest
thrills came while working the drug
detail.
"The drug subculture and drug
distribution was something I was never
involved with in high school," said
Phillips, who grew up in Costa Mesa.
"But l found it intriguing lo be
involved as an actor and see how far 1
could go in the part."
And. Phillips ~aid he's determined to
find out how far he can go in his
shining role as police officer.
"This has been my home," he said.
"And, 1 will continue to be of service
to the comm\mity for as long as I'm
able."
All of the award recipients were
commended for their. years of
dedicated service.
• Holly Carver, who wns named
Civilian of the Year, has worked in
every division of the department.
Currently working as a crime analyst,
Carver is responsible for publishing the
Crime Stoppers Textbook, which
details crime trends, court actions and
other information.
"Holly has been with .the department
for nine years," said City Manager
Allan Roeder, who hosted the awards.
"It's a great pleasure to see young

do a great job and still remain
dedicated to their family."

But James Ure, a Salvador

"The prevailing winds are from

Without admitting any wrongdo-
ing, Macco paid Aceveza based on
allegations that the crosswalk
striping wasn't visible to motorists.
"The stripes were almost com-
pletely obliterated due to con-
struction," Hayden said.
Young's family has since signed
Hayden on to represent them· for
the death of their father.
Instead of focusing on fa~ed
striping, however, Hayden will
fight th is case on allegations that
the city was negligent in not in-
stalling a traffic light immediately
after Aceveza's crash.
Hayden declined to disclose how
much money he won for Aceveza,
but said she was ''pleased with the
settlement." Sources close to the
case said Macco's insurance paid
out less th an $100,000.
Hayden said he intends to file

In the meantime, the driver who
killed Youns and Crowell faces ve-
hicular manslaughter charges.
Francisco Jimenez, 25, is sched-

.. Attorneys on both sjdes of the
case have confirmed they arc try-

circumvent trial. The maximum
sentence Jimenez could receive
under law is one year in jail on
each count. Before both sides
agree to a punishment, however,
the victims' families have asked for
permission1 to address the judge.
None of the family members
could be reached for comment
Thursday.
On the morning of the crash,
Jimenez told police the rising sun

the victim. Police have since re-

"There was this &irl who would
hang around the (boxinf) ring and
she just cauaht my eye,' Spiegel
said. "I'm very glad I got to know
her."
Jeanene Spiegel said the key to
their Iona marriage was simple:
"We fiaht, but then we make up."
Clara Casey, meanwhile, offered
a little more cynical marital advice
-"murder yes, divorce never."
"Marriage is a second career,"
she told the audience. "You have
got to wor~ hard at it."
As befits a ceremony held at the
Cal Spas Heritage Stage, the ~ent
was Calif omia-dsual, with the
smiling couples dressed in shorts,

from the bat-dcc:oratin& contest
scheduled prior to the wedding.
But the eight couples on stage
didn't stem to mind the lack of
interest as they stared serenely
into their partners' eyes and
repeated their vows under the
direction of Rick Lakt>, pastor at
Orange Hills Baptist Church.
"I enjoy seeing how marriage
can work if people work at it,".
said Lake, who has presided over
the fair's seniors' wedding for
three years now.
"This ceremony is encouraging
'to people who arc married. It's
great to sec people who arc
serious about their commitment
and who consider the f celing.s of
their partner. You can really sec
the lifelong dividends of marriage
in these couples."
Following the vow renewal, the
couples toasted each other with
non-alcoholic dwnpaanc and
danced the •• Annivenary Waltz."
Lake concluded the ceremony by
announcing the three couples who
had been married lonaest.
With their 67-year union,
Margaret and Constantino Ponio
of Westminster came in second to
the Spiegcls.
Margaret Porzio said the key to
their marriage was, "we live
together, love togc(her and hug
together." And they also tore up
the dance floor togc:thcr during
the waltz, dancing t~·to-toc at a
quick pace and twirling around
flawlessly.
The energetic Porzios cited Jheir
children and grandchildren as the
greatest joy of their marriage.
"They've been very good
children -never in trouble,"
Margaret Porzio said. "We love
them and hope they h:ive as good
of a life as we had."
The three couples married
longest each received a dinner for
two at Bakers Square Restaurant.

A shocking side?
When Gino Boero, a prized '49
guard, was an innocent-eyed freshman
just out of a highly rcfin~d military
school and still a devout Catholic, he
was befriended by Kingston, and
offered a ride home. He happily
accepted the offer.
As Boero recalled, the car ran out
of gas en route to Corona del Mar.
"Back in a minute," Kingston said,
leaping out of the car with a small gas
can in hand. Th.e wide-eyed freshman
was mortified as he observed
Kingston siphoning some gas from
another car.
Out of a recent burst of laughter,
Boero said, ''There rsanfiin1Ung of

suddenly I was an accomplice."
Kingston's explanation was
probably: "I just borro\\'.ed enough for
us to get home."
Coachabili1y?
Les Miller, who tutored Kingston
on the '47 Bee team, recalled a time
when he pulled him to the sidelines.
With a chuckle, Miller said, "h was
easy coaching John. All l had to say
was, 'John, you're not going to let
that guy push you all over the place,
arc you.?'" And the jolt was
sufficient for the upset player to
storm back oo the field and take
charge.
People got confused by his careers
in later life. He was once a polished
stock and bonds broker. Later he
formed his own construction
company. And, at some point, he
labored on skyscrapers as a
steelworker in San Diego.
Kingston, never a braggart about
football achievements or the brutal
combat as a Marine sergeant on the
Korean front lines, was the father of
three boys. Although divorced from
their mother, he once mentioned the
high regard he m'aintained for her
and that he .. stayed in touch to
extend any help on any problem."
