Earh r this year, chamber. pr ·de t Ed Fawcett had the folks t acific Rim Trading Caps print up a couple thousand POGs with the slogan "Shop Costa Mesa" and the city's graffiti hotline number printed on them. lie distributed the milkcaps to the community via local businesses, the police department and at the Lions Club Fist. Fry f cstival. So popular were the public-service POGs that Fawcett had another couple thousand printed. Now, Fawcett's idea light bulb is aglqw again. This time, he had Pacific Rim print a couple thousand Costa Mesa Police Department milkcaps, with Officer of the Year Bob Phillips' name printed on one side and a replica of the Costa Mesa police badge on the other. The chamber handed Phillips the first one as he was feted at the Costa Mesa Police Awards Luncheon last week. The police department will pass the Bob Phillips POGs out 10 local kids through its community programs. Fawcett said he's hooked on the promotional punch packed by the POGs. He's particularly enthused about the positive messages POGs can relay to kids, who are the most avid collectors. Said Fawcett, "It's a hot fad -why not piggyback on it?" - 0 PARKIN' IT ... The Costa Mesa City Council will again be discus~g the city's parks. during totlay's regular 6:30 p.m. meeting at City Hall. This ti~c, the council will consider which elements of a parks master plan will be adopted into the city's general plan. Earlier this month, the council accepted the study, but didn't approve any of its recommendations. "The council, basically, wanted to just clean up the master plan a little before incorporating any of the details into the general plan," said City Manager Allan Roeder. ''Then, we 'II go back and do some additional work on our capital - improvements program on the parks and review some of the possible locations for new parks." Roeder said those plans will be presented to the council sometime in the fall . One clement that won 't be incorporated into the general plan is the study's recommendations on Fairview Park. The proposed master plan had suggested the city develop a portion of the wildlands to meet any future recreational needs of the community -advice which didn't set well with some residents, or the council. "What the City Council will be talking about on Monday has no effect on Fairview Park," Roeder said. "There's nothing in there that changes that." 0 WORKER KJLLED AT FAIR . • . Huber, 23 at the time she disa p- peared, was identified through fin· gerprints by coroners in Phoenix on Saturday, days after her bat- tered and decomposed body was pulled from a freezer that had been set up in rental truck. The truck had been reported stolen from Lake Forest, Yavapai Gounty Sherifrs spokeswoman Laurie Berra said. There's also a possibility that she's been alive all this time. We just plain don't know." Dennis and lone Huber stand in the doorway of their daughter Oenise's'room, which is filled with boxes as the family plans to move from Newport Beach. Denise's body was found last week, more than three years since she was last seen by her family. On Sunday, sberifrs investiga- tors and three COsta Mesa police detectives combed the ~ll Country Club home of John Fama· laro, 37, who is being held on sus· picion of murder. Personal items belonging to Huber were found in the home, Berra said. She refused to specify if the items were the contents of Huber's purse that police said dis- appeared with her in the early morning hours on June 3, 1991. A preliminary hearing is sched- uled for Friday in Arizona, but Fa- malaro's lawyer said he anticipates a grand jury indictment to be handed down before then. School district examining bike trail issue ~ Newport-Mesa officials are petitioned to join fight for path's extension so children will have safer ride to school. BY MAM.c S. PosNBa, Srt.n Warn• NEWPORT BEACH -The quest for an extended beachf ront bicycle trail l"\ay have a new player -the Newport-Mesa Unified School District. Trustees and Superintendent Mac Bernd remain neutral in the debate that dty orncials say has liaaered for at leut 20 years. But, now district oft'icialt have beaun to examine tho blue. Bernd requested iafonnatlon on the plan and bacQround from Cty Man.,er Kevin Murpby after manben ol tho ckJ'• lk)'de Tralla OMnmltteo made a ,.._.. • talion to trustees and school dis- trict officials at Tuesday night's meeting. It's the first time the school dis- trict has been involved in the bi· cycle trail issue. JoAnn Lombardo, who pleaded with City Council members on Monday night to resolve the issue, on Tuesday asked school board members to push for a lengthened bike trail so children will have a safer path to school. The trail now ends at 36th Street and diverts bicycle traffic to Seashore Drive, somethina cyclists say is danaerous. The hope is th:at the trail will be extended to the Santa Ana River jetty where it would link up with Huntinaton Beach's bike trail. Opponents contend the trail ex- tension would ruin an unde¥el- opcd stretch of ,beach while creat· ina litter, noise and crime. Murphy said earlier this week that he'd sent Bernd information on the longtime controversy and would provide anything cl c the school district wanted. At last, the truth may be com- ing out! We ladies have known all along that we didn't originate from Adam's rib -we're not ooneheads. · Females are distinctly dif- (crent primates with their own 59 and Holding tear ducts, intuitions, in- consistencies and curves -no better than men, but a dash more mature. That's why we're as- signed all the patient, labor- intensive tasks: cutting ou t food cou- pons, fol ding laundry, looking after the kid- dies and stretching budgets. Our earliest ac- complishments have never been recorded, but it's be- lieved women accidentally dis- covered fire by rubbing two sticks together to make finger bowls for the Neanderthal dinner table. We were also the first sex to walk upright since it was easier to spot a bargain. After thousands of years, the two species still clin,g Jo the ir basic differences which confound and exasperate one another. Nowhere is this more evident than behind the wheel or a ca r. The male is born w'th a tire-kicking gene, for- ei~n to the female. Before tires, he kicked the wheels of his chario t. In th e Stone Age, he kicked boulders. Anthro- pqlogi!lts have no explanations fOf this behavior,1 save male aggression. ·in contrast, women arc to. tally disinterested in tires, transmissions, motors and fan belts. It's enough the car moves -they d6n't want to know why. For us, the most important .. piece of equipment is the rear view mirror to check our make-up, hair and motorcyele cops. When lost, we stop and ask for directions. Males never admit they're lost until the_y're tracked down by the Bureau of Missing Persons. The sexual drive is more compatible between the sexes than the "automatic drive." Conversational skills also differ dramatically, especially in arguments. Women possess a lethal supply of adjectives and adverbs in their arsenal, while men retr.eat to grunts, groans and sighs. Every male is convinced there are two dangers that harm his vision: looking directly at the sun and establishing eye contact with a female's riveting laser beams. There's never been a logical explanation why men disap- pear before dinner. They've been doing this for th ousands of yea rs before frozen foods. Where they go and wh~t'they do is one of nature's myster- ies. Real men don't eat quiche -real women do. Husbands collect clutter, wives collect credit cards. Females rely on doctors first, men rely on doc- tors last. Women live for love, males for the Super Bowl. If Mother Nature had in- vented a less compelling re- productive method, it's doubt- ful the sexes would share the same part of the world. At least it would solve the popu- lation explosion. To the consumer, the universally accepted cold-cranking amp rat- ing represents a yardstick by which different batteries can be compared The problem arises when some manufacturers intro- duce the "cranking-amp rating " {or "warm-cranking amp rating") wbich measures battery output at 32 degrees F. Because a battery produces more current in warm weather than cold, this latter rat- ing method may confuse unwary consumers with "apples and or- anges" comparisons. HINT: As a general rule of ltllmb, an amp rating at 32 degrees F. will average 25 percent h1ghe1 than one at O degrees F OPEN AND SHUT CASES The onset of summer presents car owners with a good time to check the thermostats of their car engines' cooling systems. This component.is designed to open or close at designated temperatures. When coolant temperatures ia11 below the 197 to 170 degrees F. range, the thermostat remains ciosed to inhibit the flow of cool- ant through the engine. thereby allowing the engine to warm up. Above this temperature range, the thermostat opens to enable the engine to rid rtself of unwanted heat. If a thermostat is stuck in the open position, engine warm- up time increases and engine life decreases. If a thermostat is (par- tially) stuck closed, the engine will run hot or overheat. This latter possibility is made all the more likely by hot summer weath- er. Checking your thermostat be- fore heading off for the weekend can make the difference between a great trip and an overheated engine on the highway. Don't be left in the lurch! "It's not a decision to be taken lightly." A few potential challengers con- tacted last week did sound serious about a council run, but whether th eir actions support their words remains to be seen. Chris Steele, a 53-year-old self- employed private investor, has run for City Council a number of times -unsuccessfully. But the possible candidate said he's probably going to give it yet anoth er try this year. "I've always filed very late," said Steele, whose big concern is crime prevention. "If I do run, I'll be fil- ing early so that I can get my mes- sage out, seek endorsements and run as. grass-roots a campaign as possible." And another frequent candi- date, Brian Theriot, a 37-year-old former planning commissioner, said either he or his wife, Melissa, 35. will enter the race this year. The couple, both of whom work with the World POG Federation, believe the city should improve its relationship with the business community. "One of us is going to run," Drian Theriot said. "But we won't file until the very last day (of the application period)." Goat Hill Tavern manager Gary Monahan, 34, entered the council race two years ago and captured a preuy 'strong folio" ing. He be- lieves he has a better snot at a scat this time. Monahan said he, too, will run on a strong business platform. "The city needs to have stronger tics with the business community for revenue enhancement," he said. A fifth possible candidate · is Karen McGlinn, director of Share Our Selves, Costa Mesa's largest charitable organization. McGlin n. who's 51, ran for a council seat four years ago and said she may try again. "I'm giving it serious consider- ation," McGlinn said. "But, I think my ultimate decision will be determined by how much of me there is to slice up." . In Newport Beach, where four of the seven council seats will be up for grabs, as many as a dozen names have been dropped in re- cent months as possible council candidates. The most prominent and often- mcntioned names include planning commissioners Tom Edwards and Norma Glover, Assistant Hunting- ton Beacb City Attorney Art OcLaLoza and former Newport I beld at 6:30 p.m. at Sherman Gardens, 2647 East Pacific Coast ffiabway ia Corolla dcl Mar.
